He was just curious, that's all, why shouldn't he ask, especially with Heredia's interview in this week's SPIEGEL, where this Angel Heredia actually stated that it is impossible for a human to run the 400m under 44 seconds without the ude of drugs. Michael Johnson's world record is 43,18 s.
