I grew up in a highland regiment in Canada.i saw many tattoo's back in Toronto in the early 70 and 80.when i was with the 48 th Highlanders of Canada. I was lucky enough to tour of the castle in 87
The first two tunes played are "Rakish Paddy" and "Paddy's Epic Journey". They're from a set of reels featured on the CD "Masterblasters" by the much-missed Victoria Police Pipe Band (1998). I urge you all to buy it, it's one of the greatest pipe band albums of all time. Unfortunately I don't know the name of the last tune.
Not 100% sure, but I think the last tune is called 'Jamiesons Reel'.It was a brand new commission to mark the retirement of the Tattoo Director,Mel Jamieson.
I had to pull out my 2006 DVD and I am still not 100% sure but this clip is right after the slow air and the following tunes were played: Devils Staircase, Rakish Paddy, Paddy's Epic Journey, and then Jamiesons Reel. But I do not think you have all four tunes here.....
No wonder Scots regiments had such success in battle! imagine hearing that coming towards you from the distance? would have the enemy shaking in their boots before they even started!
I've never seen so many pipes and drums. We have our parades here in the states, but nothing in comparison. I have to see this before I die! And God save your Queen! ;)
I tried to join the OTC band when I started university at St Andrews but failed the hearing test as part of the enlistment process. I was gutted. I've gone to the Tattoo every year since I was 2 and spent my whole life wanting to play in it.
The "Edinburgh Military Tattoo" to give it the proper name, is an annual event held at Edinburgh Castle and it features performers from all over the world doing their thing. it's a fabulous event and should be on everyones "things to see before i die" list.
i was at the tattoo im not 100% sure but i think its the new regimental song when the units merged into 1. i think the song as forward as one but i might be wrong.
I`ve watched the dvd repeatedly and it always gives me a lump in my throat and a tear in my eyes it makes you feel great and proud to be Scottish long may it continue.
I am scotish/canadian/north american indian and the best part of my heritage has got to be SCOTISH .When i here pipes i GET A CHILL UP MY SPINE ,MY HAIR STANDS UP ON THE BACK OF MY NECK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! truly incredible nothing else like it
When does it start, hard to get tickets, hotell.Help me out, where to search.Want to bring back my old dad one last time,he love the Tatto and Scotland. He is moore scotish than swedish. For daddy,OK!!!!
I attended tattoo, last year. It was fantastic. you can buy the tickets from EBAY. before buying the tickets, look at the tatoo's website to find whetehr the location of seats are good. I bought the tickets from ebay for £60 per person (nominal price was £25 per person). In addition, I wanted to have my hotel near the castle. I bookd the APEX hotel. It costed me about £500 for a double room.
like the man said, go to the tattoo website for ticket info, as for hotels, i would go to a nearby town like stirling (35 mins by train) easier to get a hotel and a beautiful place to stay as well.
I love seeing the pipes played, especially like this with all the men marching-it makes me feel proud to be Scottish. I absolutely love it. Thanks for posting this. =D
God bless the Scots, I am a Welsh woman married to a Scottish man. Amazing the celtic. Have to adore bagpipes and drums,, best musical things in the uk ever!

what is the differance between the irish pipe and drum bands and the scottish pipe and drum bands
bigjohn697791 4 years ago
They're more or less the same now but tradtionally Irish pipes had only 2 drones whereas Scottish pipes have 3

The amount of space on the esplanade in front of the castle is really small. It's amazing how many performers squeeze onto it when the tattoo is on.

jesus that gives me goosebumps!
mysticbeast86 4 years ago
I can't remember the name of the second tune(Starting 0.18)
But Shotts & Dykehead played it as part of they're medley for the worlds in 2007.
As for the rest, it's a medley of tunes mashed into one. You'd have to looks up medley tune listings for this particular event.
Hope that helped a tad =]

its amasing to walk through those massive doors onto the esplinade with all the cameras flashing and the crowds packed into the stands.
with the drummers behind you and the pipers in front, it makes your heart double in speed.
its an amasing sight to watch and even beter to participate in.
the drum beatings are usually rewritten on the morning before the event.

the Voice of the Castle - brings the audience together, cheering individually for their countries but united in an international fraternity.
French shake hands with English, Japanese nod smilingly to Swedish neighbours, native Scots welcome Italians. The Tattoo is family now.
