okay well lets look at this, cyclists even on mountain bikes with the softest suspensions and low tire pressure can still exceed 30, either the guy on the bike is a lazy slob and the runner isnt, the video isnt real, or the cyclist doesnt realize he can shift, plain and simple on a bike with gears your not gonna lose to a sprinter. we are assuming these arent olympic athletes but if they were i think youd agree a cyclist can do 100m faster then a sprinter
@jhardy66617 You'd be hard pressed to beat Usain Bolt racing along side him on a bicycle. The acceleration would be too great and he'd have crossed the line before you'd built up speed. I think I can cycle 100m standing start faster than I can run it though but then my 100m time is probably not much better than 14 seconds lol.
@TimpBizkit have you seen mark cavendish, robbie mcewen, chris hoy, theo bos, or any of them sprint? were talking a road bicycle here. with gears, you get up to speed quite quickly. the closest velodrome(bicycle track if u dont know) is over 300M and during single lap races from a standing start the time is probably 20 seconds, over 3 times as long in just over twice long. cyclist would win.
My argument is - sprinters can get up to speed quickly - even quicker than cyclists on geared bikes but they are limited to a top speed of 25-30 ish. Geared bikes are quicker of the line than SS. Even I could beat Chris Hoy if I had a geared bike and he had a SS and the race was short. Once he'd wound up the gear he'd catch me up. Standing start to 300m speed SKATING record is about 24 seconds. Could a pro bicycle sprinter with gears AVERAGE 23mph over 100m from standing start I wonder.
I think you're right though. I think the cyclist would just about take the win. 100m is enough of a distance. Standing start I could run 100m in about 14 seconds with a peak speed of 18mph. I predict I could cycle it in about 12 seconds, crossing the line at around 27mph or so, so pro vs pro
@TimpBizkit i have reached 38 before as a top speed, and im nowhere near pro because i never have motivation to ride by myself day after day for months at a time ya know? no one else to ride with near me or im sure id be doing even better
I have reached 38 before as well but the road has always had a gradual down slope and a tailwind (15 the other way lol). I used to find it hard to believe those numbers as I top out at 38 down Bathwick Hill and at those speeds there's at least 1500 watts of gravitational power behind me. Also I'm usually wearing t-shirt and jeans out. I think my top speed in Lycra, trying to make sure the wind is neutral is about 31mph. On a TT bike I'd be faster. Sometimes I'm limited to 22 by a gust of wind!!
The times were 10.08s for the cyclist and 10.51s for the sprinter. 100m that is!
Jan's PB on a proper surface is 10.21s.
The cyclist is a Mountain-cross biker able to blast out the start with his geared mountain-bike.

An interesting race would be 100m: Usain Bolt running "bolting" vs Chris Hoy on a geared bike so off the line acceleration is really fast.

I know the sprinters sister. She's an amazing athlete herself.

Cyclist sprinter 45 mp.p.h. fastest sprinter 28 m.p.h.....

yeah sprinters can definitely exceed 20 mph.

actually a sprinters top speed is closer to 27mph.

oh those crazy euro's...long live Borat..it's a nice....high five...I like you, you like me?
lesmcluffalot 3 years ago
youd have to have a really low gear ratio to loser to a sprinter
sprinters can hit maybe maybe maybe 20 on a perfect day and for a short time
cyclists can hold 25plus for hours hitting 45 at top speed sometimes

If you look the bike isn't even a road bike, let alone track or TT. It's some kind of MTB.

@TimpBizkit yes, without a doubt. i can reach 23 in just a few pedal strokes, no problem to average much more then that

@TimpBizkit ive done 38 flat no wind
it sucks ive probably only done around 45 or so downhill. but on two wheels(motorcycle) its much quicker :D
jhardy66617 10 months ago
@jhardy66617 I bashed out a 30mph into a slight headwind wearing a T-shirt and baggy shorts on a Saracen Helix. Makes me think I have potential :D
