wow this was just a small little video I put together one night and I am so Happy to see that so many people have enjoyed it. I really hope Bernard's work will be available one day he truly is an unknown master.
I am Bernard's son Stefan. Thanks to everyone who's commented on my father's work and the 2006 release.Help me get the word out...I possess MANY hours of unreleased live duo/trio performances that would blow you away. The bad news is it's in dyre need of remastering. So far, no recording houses have shown enough interest to desire taking on this project and distributing this phenomenal content. I shall keep trying though...!!! HNY to all...!
I remember one of his rare engagements when he backed Mel Torme at the Mayflower Hotel in Baltimore, MD
Mel as a part of his act would slide the piano player off the bench and then commence playing the piano. During this engagement he did not do this. When I asked him after one of the performances why he did not do this, he replied "It would be like asking God to leave the church.
The first time I heard Bernard in person was at Birdland with Gus Nemeth his bassist at the time. I had bought his record "Pied Peiffer"
I studied with Bernard Peiffer and we were great friends. Unbelieveably he played my wedding which is probably the only one he ever played. He taught at my music school in NJ one day a week, and I booked he and his trio many times in jazz venues.
My wife's uncle booked Bernard in his club "The Picasso" in the 1960's in Philadelphia. This guy was way ahead of Keith Jarrett. I have two copies of his Decca Album. Unreal.
la jeune generation n a pas connu bernard peiffer a l epoque ou il jouait au cote des freres fol henri renaud persiany et autres dans les boites de la capitale
My dad helped Bernard immigrate to the U.S. from France. Bernard was my sisters piano teacher. He was a very sweet and kind man who deserved better than he got. Benard is, without a doubt, one of the most overlooked jazz pianists of the Twentieth Century.
He was my harpsichord teacher in the early 70's. He was an accomplished classical keyboardist as well. Oddly, he never played or taught me any jazz at all! I still have all of my music books with his notes in them.
I discovered him only months after he passed. However, a music teacher of mine in the 70's recorded him on reel to reel, I tracked that guy down a few years ago and sure enough he had dumped it to digial, and sent me 3cds of this guy within a year of his death, some the playing is unreal... the recordings are low quality and the tapes ran out in the middle of songs but it's still totally unbelievable. This guy never left Philly much -- shame there wasn't more of him preserved.
wow I have found a few high priced old albums of him on ebay but that is wild that you have som recordings there is no way I could get a copy of them is there he is just a great musician I know that he played to a sold out crowd once at Carnegie Hall once but I have heard that he did not like recording very much anyway if I could get a copy of his music I would be really grateful thanks for the comments.
Wow that is so cool man thanks for the comment it is so hard to find any information on him and I am trying to spread the word about this great Pianist.
I played occasionally with your dad as a young aspiring jazz musician. i was/am good friends of the Turners who lived in Germantown and had a house full of music and musicians. your dad also taught there for awhile. In addition to being an amazing player and mentor and teacher, he was a great and honest person. I miss him.
I have the album, but thanks for posting this. we all stayed with your family on lbi many yrs ago. You were a baby and used to bang your head against the crib to fall asleep.
great pianist..one of the best to come out of France...RIP

I heard Bernard once in a bar in Northeast Philadelphia back in the late 60's. Incredible style and technique.

There will never be another Bernard Peiffer.
Ever.
