Such great memories, definitely one of the best I've played in the past. Compared to other games at that time, it had a great storyline, I loved the cute characters/environments and was sold when I heard the intro music. Awesome! <3
about the 4th grade i fell in love...the dragon breath is what caused me to come. I heard a sound similar to it through my walls, reminded me of that sound, came hear and herd it <3 For anyone who has not tried it, you must. This is the basis of games like dragon nest (without pvp) its a fast pasce action game where you level up skills/level through items found on your journey...Just dont name the 2 next characters "Ally" and "Sprite" -_- they deserve much better names than i gave them.
FINALLY!! YESS!! I remember i was like 2-3 years old when i got this game and due to my age i was clueless to what i was supposed to do, i only managed to get the sword and i didnt ven know how to save. A year later we sold our SNES and i was still stuck at the same place, always wondering what was beyond the sword. Now that i know the name of the game i can finally find out! ^^
i started a new game in may on my snes, the gameplay is still fun, but the story seem like a cheap version of FF6. Empire, Returners, Kefka/Thanatos, etc. It was better in my memory.
@ThaliaIV yeah i know. its just that when it first came out in 1993-94, it was really fun. but playing it again today is still fun, but the story kinda suck.
dear nintendo, i love you and ur wii virtual console, this is the first game i grabbed, followed by a link to the past, and all your super marios and dks
Easily of the greatest games of all time. Today's younger generations just do not understand what they missed out on. Today's younger generations do not know what it takes for a game to be considered "Great." Many of the videogame companies drifted away from this type of videogame setup. I am honestly not sure if a videogame will be created that is up to the level of Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Ocarina of Time, etc...
@BuffaloHockeyTown I guess we are from the same generation, but the greatest game of all time, I've to disagree. The best on super nintendo, but FF are not so far away behind, I'm not even talking about zelda 3 or Breath of Fire. I don't know, I can tell you this, it is a lot more intense today, in every direction, gameplay, story line, music, ambience, everything. Just look at Skyrim demo for example, you don't have to read dialog, that's why old games doesn't look interesting for young gamers
when your having a bad day, which i am now, i always come and listen to this, listening to this beautiful song and reminding me of the happy days when i was a child, playing this round my grandmothers house on the super nintendo :) those were the days, i'd do anything to go back to that time, where i had no worries in the world
@VideoGameVeteran This was a original game. I agree. I grew up in the 90's and remember the good ol' days... it was the turn of the Millennium when I noticed that things started to fall apart. I really miss the ol' days... everything is great!
@LAMCL23 I have only made a chiptune demake for F-Zero, but already have 4 "Shiryu's Arcade" volume with several videogame remixes/covers. Also have two Dune tribute LP's, a TRON LP and EP and a Rollerball LP and EP. Any chance you could tell me where I can hear your LP? I want to cover the OST of this in the future If I can, too. =)
Hey guys, if you wanna see a playthrough of this game with some commentary by Black Fonzie about life, love, happiness, sex lies and videotapes, check me out..I'm playing this game, ChronoTrigger, and other 8 and 16bit classics, along with some current gen games inspired by old, like Bastion and Limbo. I'd appreciate the support for these classics, guys. Love and peace - youtube.com/user/CoolBlackFonzie
It's not the best of all time...the story was mediocre, there was a draught of dialogue. If you say you were sucked in by the story, you're lying. The gameplay is decent, but not that great.
It doesn't even give descriptions for ANY items or gear in this game. You have to just find out by equipping or using an item. The battle system itself was OK.
Secret of Mana is an overrated, unknown, linear, unwisely crafted and a damn obscure game to boot. Go buy Terranigma for a fantastic snes game.
Hey everybody! I have released my new album 'Progenitor' which has electronic music inspired by great games such as Secret Of Mana. It’s up on my channel ORTmusic to check out and download!
Wasn't this game a true masterpiece? It's like when you look at old buildings or some old thing from the past and you realize how crappy the future and the present is
@ShiryuGL I believe you! Me and my friends played this for hours when I was in 5th or 6th grade. We actually made an entire strategy guide for this ourselves, hand written! So, it is just insane! I have many fond memories of this game. This and Chrono Trigger is close, I dont know if I could pick between the two if it came down to it.; They both revolutionalized the RPG world, and is why Square Soft actualy started making games like this later on. But yes, this is one of the best!
The design and plot for this is similar to an old game called breath of fire that sucked once it hit its 3rd sequel I used to love that game till they completely changed everything.
I first played this when I was 11 years old. I was with my best friend and I named the main character Muaarghhurr. When I got to the sword in the stone the ghost was like, MUAARGHHUR! MUAARGHHUR! PICK UP THE SWORD!
@ObArRaGeX Describe faster paced. Secret of Mana has more "action" on the combat I guess, but both have pretty much the same pace. Play both, they are 2 of my most beloved games ever.
My dad played this a lot when I was younger and I would watch. I forgot about it but every once and a while would hear the music in my head. I had no idea where it was from until I found the game cartridge and the memories came back. Now I know where the music is from after years of wondering.
I love this game so much. When ever I start to get angry I think of soothing and inspirational music from it and it puts me in a state of mind that is unlike any other. I've loved this game from the moment I played it when I was 9 and will love it until the day that I die.
This game was absolute horseshit. At the beginning you fight two werewolves and the only way to win is luck. I hate games where you can can't move or react and the enemy just wails on you till you die. Then you have to go through a time consuming bullshit journey back only to have it happen a gain. Too bad, nice game, but shit like this just flat out ruined the experience.
what i've found annoying about this game is that the camera doesn't center on the character. Idk how many times i've ran into a monster... + watsup with the energy system? Why do I have to w8 like 5 seconds until I can attack a rabbit?
I loved this game, and I loved our Super Nintendo. I'm only fourteen, and I can't find ANYTHING to play on now day's PS2's, Wii's... gaaah. Secret of Mana was freakin' amazing. I used to play these games with my dad, so did my brother before me. Kind of like a tradition. I love ittt!
I haven't seen this game in over a decade! I can't believe how this game makes me feel when I hear that music again. I wish they made games that were deep like this nowadays. This is definitely a classic game. Thanks for posting!!!
@ninnypiggy You can say "no" and just keep playing the old ones. One of the reasons why I only have a Wii is because 360/PS3 games with their HD photorealistc graphics mean nothing to me. Currently replayign this one, btw. =)
@ninnypiggy Signs of times, I guess. Just be glad that like me, you were at the right place at the right time to be able to enjoy games like Secret of Mana. ^_^
@ShiryuGL i salute you my man, emulating should keep on rocking..but saying consoles have HD photorealistic is just false, everything is 480p and upscaled like shit
@ShiryuGL to be honest i prefer older games like these but that doesnt mean there arent any good games out now. theres 2 games of mana on ds.
sure give me mana games and FF tactics over FF13 or CoD but heck i quite enjoy halo. it has good graphics but so what. to me halo reach plays like a dream.
i just try to make the best out of both gaming generations. for the record im only 16. i was a baby in the generation of good games but that doesnt mean i dont play em and enjoy em :P
@ShiryuGL True that man, but sometimes great games show up, Eternal Sonata on the X360 is a great RPG that i had the pleasure of playing, the storyline and characters are fantastic, so is the game aswell. Tales of Vesperia was looking good too, did not finished it, played on a friend's house. Arc Rise Fantasia on the Wii is a good one too.
@ShiryuGL They may lend towards more "realistic games' but that doesn't mean good games don't come out on them. Just like how the Wii will also have bad games. You just need to keep an eye out for the proper games. Reward the good games by buying them and more will come. Ignore the ones that are merely "ka-ching ka-ching and shiny too" and they will become less frequent. At least that is how things would work in theory. But good games on all systems are harder to find now it seems.
@ninnypiggy There ARE new games that are still oldschool tho, Golden Sun, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy's (I think so at least), Kingdom Hearts, Breath of Fire (?), New Zelda's Etc.
I did just purchase a SNES with Terranigma, Secret of Mana, A Link to the Past, Illusion of Time and I'm gonna get the other epic old rpg's and other games too (secret of evermore). I get new games selectively (thats not even a word) And I have non new ones that arent good XD I could name em all but thats kinda alot.
Does that whale noise during the Squaresoft screen only happen in this game or is it a Squaresoft noise? Like, do they play that whale noise during Chrono Trigger?
I loved this game so much. I remember renting it from Hastings (yes back when you did that) and could barely make it to school for a month. I must have driven my parents crazy. I loved this game because I loved RPGs but this the first one you could actually play with a friend(s) (multi-tap FTW!). Unfortunately I never had anyone to play with :(
@supersoniche If you are refering to "Seiken Desentsu 3" ("Secret of Mana 3"), it's one of the best ARPG ever made IMO. "Seiken Desentsu 2" ("Secret of Mana 2") is this one, the first was for the Gameboy, released in the west as "Final Fantasy Adventure".
@jjk1412 It's a great game, but it has nothing to do with either Final Fantasy or Secret of Mana. They just called it FF to make it sell, it is in fact an introduction for western gamers to the RPG genre. I love it, mind.
I am sorry, but final fantasy mystic quest was a terrible game...there was no adventure..you had to follow a set path on the map if i recall....It was made for north americans and made easy to try to get us into the rpg genre....It was especially dissapointing because we has already seen (the awesome) final fantasy 2 (US) and square did not release the (japanese) final fantasy 5 over here...
@Acosmicist This is one of the best games ever made.
The plot is very well-made and beautiful, so that statement is very unfounded. Funny and cheesy humour does not make a plot dumb. They just make added a little charm and humour to the game, which just made the story even more endearing and fun. Where´s your child inside? ,p
I remember this game back in the day, loved it then how the story was so good even back in 1993-94 when i played it. Im 28 now and 29 this year but i think if its available on the wii i might give this game one more run through before my 30th birthday that way i won't feel so guilty haha have to get me a wii first though ;D
I would buy a wii just for this game if its available to buy online, it takes me back alright, when gaming was good haha im 28 now and still remember how good the story was even back then. Im 29 this maybe i should go back and play before i hit 30 next year :D
that intro is definitely one of the greatest and baddest intros ever in early video game history (pre PSX, 2D era). Its less corny than most movies trailers or teasers.
Still, after all these years, my favorite Square game.
Lots of players cite Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy III (VI) as the game that made the Super NES the must-have system for RPG fans during the 16-bit era. And for good reason, those games were amazing.
Who ever made this game like thought of the story line etc.. Was AMAZING AND BRILLIANT.
I played this game when I was in high school about 11-12-13 yo and I loved it so I bought the game.
After all these years I'm 27yo now and watching this video and hearing the theme song is amazing. Reminds me of the past and it makes me sad sometimes. GOOD TIMES.
Easily one of the most captivating games I've ever played, and I've been around for a while...29! This game will always be in my top 5. I'd like to say number 1, but the other 4 games were so great I had to give them all a tie for number 1. Yes, that includes Chrono Trigger!
@tubernery you aren't kidding man, these were the days where Square turned out epic hit after hit. Now they put out mediocre games and people buy them because of the name.
I'm fairly sure this is available on the Wii Virtual Console, for those interested - but yea, remaking this one (keeping the gameplay similar and updating the graphics) would be awesome.
@keithpaz IMO SNES was the golden age of games. donkey kong 2, ff 6/3, mortal kombat series, and so many more games... hell, i think i'll go get my SNES from my sisters house right now, be back...
@keithpaz Yep, unfortunately. Games we may never see again include: Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3, Chrono Trigger, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma, Tales of Phantasia, Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy 4, 5, 6, Star Ocean, Shit even Super Ninja Boy was awesome lol! last but not least, and I feel are special mentions not because they brought anything new to the table, but because they define and have everything a good RPG stands for in it. These games are Breat of Fire 1 and 2. Especially 2!
Wow watching this takes me back. I wish SquareEnix would just stop trying to please graphic hores and make a game like this with high res pixels on high res dack drops. Then add in a little next gen flare (not too much because it would kill the over all feel of the game) put in an epic story and it would be awesome. Or better yet, drop Enix and go back to being the Squaresoft that we used to love. Instead of being the SquareEnix that keeps making crappy games.
used to sleep over at friend's house when i was 10 yrs old, pass out with controllers in our hands, wake up with the sun and keep playing... every child deserves this :)
I just got the rom and started playing it on my netbook for the first time. Since my netbook is too slow to run any games, I thought I would try emulate some old SNES games. I heard this game is good. Is it just at good as say... FF6? If anyone could reply it would be nice.
They remade it this year for Mobile Phone in Japan only, of all things... some SquareEnix games for Mobile got ported to Wiiware, so there some hope, but a very slim one.
How I miss the multi-player!

@ShiryuGL to be honest i prefer older games like these but that doesnt mean there arent any good games out now. theres 2 games of mana on ds.
sure give me mana games and FF tactics over FF13 or CoD but heck i quite enjoy halo. it has good graphics but so what. to me halo reach plays like a dream.
i just try to make the best out of both gaming generations. for the record im only 16. i was a baby in the generation of good games but that doesnt mean i dont play em and enjoy em :P
peace man :)
FFan1to12 8 months ago
@ShiryuGL True that man, but sometimes great games show up, Eternal Sonata on the X360 is a great RPG that i had the pleasure of playing, the storyline and characters are fantastic, so is the game aswell. Tales of Vesperia was looking good too, did not finished it, played on a friend's house. Arc Rise Fantasia on the Wii is a good one too.
Mario0Dante 7 months ago
@ShiryuGL They may lend towards more "realistic games' but that doesn't mean good games don't come out on them. Just like how the Wii will also have bad games. You just need to keep an eye out for the proper games. Reward the good games by buying them and more will come. Ignore the ones that are merely "ka-ching ka-ching and shiny too" and they will become less frequent. At least that is how things would work in theory. But good games on all systems are harder to find now it seems.

@ninnypiggy
This comment deserves a billion thumbs ups.
RhanC777 10 months ago
@ninnypiggy There ARE new games that are still oldschool tho, Golden Sun, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy's (I think so at least), Kingdom Hearts, Breath of Fire (?), New Zelda's Etc.
I did just purchase a SNES with Terranigma, Secret of Mana, A Link to the Past, Illusion of Time and I'm gonna get the other epic old rpg's and other games too (secret of evermore). I get new games selectively (thats not even a word) And I have non new ones that arent good XD I could name em all but thats kinda alot.
JudgementRyu999 7 months ago
This makes it unbelievable that a big part of the gamers nowadays judge games on graphics and prefer good graphics over a good storyline.
I miss these days so much.

@ninnypiggy I agree, bro!
MrMemoria1985 6 months ago
@ninnypiggy I agree, I was within the era for the originality of games like this. I can't even put into words what Squaresoft is/was.
stretchypants123 5 months ago
@ninnypiggy That's why I only play older games. New market for games sucks, really. ;)

Unfortunately I never had anyone to play with :(

is the secret of mana 2 any good?
supersoniche 1 year ago
@supersoniche If you are refering to "Seiken Desentsu 3" ("Secret of Mana 3"), it's one of the best ARPG ever made IMO. "Seiken Desentsu 2" ("Secret of Mana 2") is this one, the first was for the Gameboy, released in the west as "Final Fantasy Adventure".
ShiryuGL 1 year ago
@ShiryuGL speaking of final fantasy..how about mystic quest on the super NES consol?!
jjk1412 1 year ago
@jjk1412 It's a great game, but it has nothing to do with either Final Fantasy or Secret of Mana. They just called it FF to make it sell, it is in fact an introduction for western gamers to the RPG genre. I love it, mind.
ShiryuGL 1 year ago
@jjk1412

Gotta admit though, as much as I loved this game as a kid, the further I got, the dumber the plot got. Come on... Santa Claus?
Acosmicist 1 year ago
@Acosmicist This is one of the best games ever made.
The plot is very well-made and beautiful, so that statement is very unfounded. Funny and cheesy humour does not make a plot dumb. They just make added a little charm and humour to the game, which just made the story even more endearing and fun. Where´s your child inside? ,p

I remember this game back in the day, loved it then how the story was so good even back in 1993-94 when i played it. Im 28 now and 29 this year but i think if its available on the wii i might give this game one more run through before my 30th birthday that way i won't feel so guilty haha have to get me a wii first though ;D
chriskennedy1982 1 year ago

But for me...Secret of Mana is still my #1.

this is truly one of the best games ever, also the hardest (in my opinion)

There are a handful of games that can give you a transcendent aesthetic experience. Secret of Mana gives you one in the OPENING CREDITS.

@keithpaz IMO SNES was the golden age of games. donkey kong 2, ff 6/3, mortal kombat series, and so many more games... hell, i think i'll go get my SNES from my sisters house right now, be back...
PS; F*** GRAPHICS!!!! BETTER GRAPHICS=WORSE GAMEPLAY=PROVEN FACT.
cashcrazywhiteboy 10 months ago
@keithpaz Yep, unfortunately. Games we may never see again include: Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3, Chrono Trigger, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma, Tales of Phantasia, Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy 4, 5, 6, Star Ocean, Shit even Super Ninja Boy was awesome lol! last but not least, and I feel are special mentions not because they brought anything new to the table, but because they define and have everything a good RPG stands for in it. These games are Breat of Fire 1 and 2. Especially 2!
dss103 8 months ago
Wow watching this takes me back. I wish SquareEnix would just stop trying to please graphic hores and make a game like this with high res pixels on high res dack drops. Then add in a little next gen flare (not too much because it would kill the over all feel of the game) put in an epic story and it would be awesome. Or better yet, drop Enix and go back to being the Squaresoft that we used to love. Instead of being the SquareEnix that keeps making crappy games.
silkyskeeter 2 years ago
i agree with you wholeheartedly. SoM had one of the most epic stories off all time. I have yet to come across an RPG with this much flair.
