It's about Algeria war, a war between French army and algerian nationalists fighting for independance. It's still today considered a really ugly war, with entire villages being executed by the French of the rebels at any suspicion of them working for the other side, massive use of torture by both sides, unconsiderate use of napalm and so on. It was the French equivalent of US army in Vietnam, with France and it's well trained and well equiped army vs rebels using guerilla tactics.
