Dude im just saying but you should touch a cat that young.espically if its a stray cat that gave birth,and dosent know you well(the mother cat)it will recognize a human scent on the kitten,and the mother will think the kitten is leading the humans to the cat family,and the mother thinks people will harm them.therefore,the mother wont feed the kitten you touched.dont touch a kitten until its around 4-5 weeks and it can eat normal food so it wont starve if the mother dosent feed it.just saying.

It does not hurt to handle the babies a little each day, as long mom is not upset,, in fact giving her a treat while doing so will make her feel more comfortable in letting you do so..over handling can stress the babies and mom to the point of her wanting to hide them or the babies not eating..

OMG!!! you are not suppose to pick up a 2 day year old kitten, the mother would eat it... poor thing!!! a woman next door had a mother cat who is pregnant and had 6 kittens... living underneath their porch... and one of the kids next door neighbor came to see them 3 months later after pregnancy... one of the kid picked up a kitten who is couple of days old.. the next hour the kid gave it back to the mother of course... and next thing, the mother ate the poor kitten.. i was terrified to see it..

That's not completely true, you can handle a two day old kitten just fine but the mother has to know your scent very well and you're not suppose to have them away from the mom for too long. She probably rejected the kitten because it no longer smelled like her in any way possible or maybe there was something wrong with it. My cat actually brought me all six newborn babies to watch while she went to get food once since she knew me and trusted me.

With puppies, DO NOT HANDLE THEM AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE! But with kittens, HANDLE THEM! Handle them a lot! It'll imprint on your scent and the feel of your touch, and when it gets older you'll basically be second-mommy/daddy.

With puppies though, because they've been bred to such size extremes over such a short time, the pups of small breeds are very, very fragile. More 'normal', wolf sized dogs are fine though, you can handle a golden retriever's pups, for example.

the whole 'rejecting' thing is birds. ccats operate on a more 'pride' mentality. mothers take to any kit... fathers tend to eat someone else's.

@judaphine Actually, the birds thing is a myth too. People say it's because of the smell, but birds practically have no smell, they rely on sight. Think of the brood-parisitism of cuckoos who lay their eggs in other birds' nests. If strange things around their nests or young made birds reject them, the trick would never work. :) Mums are awesome. They love their babies :)

I'm going to explain it simply :

You touch the kitten -> Mother cat smell the human smell -> Abandon him -> He dies of hunger, illness, hypothermia, etc...

It's always like this, didn't you know that ?!

And still ! The kitten needs to be 24/24h at his age with his mother, he can die of hypothermia in few minutes... It's really weak, delicate & fragile at this age...

2: The "shouldn't touch kittens or mom will reject them" is an urban myth. With all the kittens I've ever raised in my life, not once has their mother rejected them. You're probably confusing the kittens being rejected/killed thing with the FATHER - sometimes they can be a bit tetchy at the newborns. But not EVERY time. Do your research before you spread misinformation :) It makes the world a better place.

Our cat didn't reject the kittens but then again our cat considered us part of the family. I'd heard cats like to give birth alone in a dark hidden place, but when I prepared a room for her she wanted to do it ON my bed instead. :\ She gave birth in her dog bed though but she wanted me to stay with her throughout.
