There was something very creepy about freddy's claw, it was very different than Jason's machete and Michael Myer's knife, there was a certain amount of demented intimacy and horror about the claw, it was a thing that was close and could become intimate. The other slasher's killed from a distance whilst Freddy was very close and personal.

What can you say about a culture that turns a child rapist/murderer into a lovable pop-culture icon? It's very Romanesque.

@SandBarAndYou Michael Bay has MANY problems, the inability to make anything even APPROACHING film being the biggest. The best thing about the upcoming THIRD (count 'em) Transformers film is going to be Kermode's review...

@SandBarAndYou No he actually was. If you knew anything about it, you would know that. In Wes' Actually script he was, but something happen in the media and they down played that aspect. But without that it's pretty obvious he was a molester. Especially how he would mess with some of the kids, mainly the girls. Just look at the start of Freddy Vs Jason where he licks the picture and later on the dead girl says he likes little kids, especially girls. You'd know that if you were blinded by rage.

@SandBarAndYou not just Michael Bay, but all the producers involved with that remake. What you may not know is that originally, Wes Craven did write Freddy as a pedophile and murderer, but the pedophile aspect was dropped because it was deemed to extreme for the time.

@nmoravec1 If what you're saying about the original idea of Freddy is true, you've got to recognize that THAT story of Freddy is not the one that became famous because like you said, the pedophile aspect was DROPPED. Hence "Freddy was not a rapist." It was that non-pedophile Freddy that became a "lovable" icon. So no one can say that our culture has embraced the pedophile Freddy especially when everyone says the original was good and the new movie sucks.
