@RichyBMelodies And what happens when your fancy navigation kit fails? Then what? The radio might be the only thing working and you'll be damn glad of this service. Although in your case we'll see you drifting into the eye of the storm, never to be seen again.
@EverywhereVirtually So where is this magical boat then who's whole kit fails except his radio, except that's also a bit broken as well so he can't turn the nob and tune into Marine VHF and hear the shipping forecast from HM Coast Guard?
Where is this magical ship, that should such a magical event happen, and all his equipment fail (except his radio), he wouldn't just turn back to shore?
In your world he'd probably just get out his magic carpet and fly to Narnia.
@EverywhereVirtually You need to get in the real world, nobody uses the BBC Shipping Forecast, nobody needs it; it might be quaint and romantic but so is a horse and cart rumbling down cobbles, and do they broadcast a four times daily cobble report? No.
If you want to live in the olden times go back to 1978 with your tobacco pipe sat in front of a wood fire with your pot of broth on the stove and listen to the wireless until 10pm when it goes off the air. You'd love it.
@RichyBMelodies youre missing the point. they cant forecast the weather on board. they need the radio.
You should try living on a container ship in the middle of nowhere with 35 metre waves and winds 120km/h. without the shipping forecast ships could sail into life-threatening situations.
Radiohead's "In Limbo" really invokes a lot of this hypnotic drawl, only less comforting and a bit more unsettling. That song's how I learned of these.
The BBC & HM Coastguard possibly the oldest of British Institutions in existance working in tandem. Very hypnotic. Very comforting. For those in Peril On the Sea the BBC shall speak Peace unto Mariner, Her Majesty Coastguard remain always listening alwats prepared
Brings back so many memories from my childhood, all tucked up in bed with my transistor radio on...perhaps thats why I travelled so much lol nice video ty
I was reading Chris Stewarts book 'Three ways to capsize a boat' and he mentioned the shipping forecast and I had thought about it being hypnotising like yourself!
This is absolutely fantastic, shame you couldn't work in the music that precedes it on Radio 4, its called sailing by. I always found the music and the shipping forecast haunting in some way.
Excellent I wake up to the shipping forecast on radio 4 and I love the VLCC going through the heavy seas, I've been at sea for the last 41 years on tankers
i love the shipping forecast for exactly the same reasons.. i start imagining distant and dark places with the sound of crashing waves and all.. but what exactly do you mean "our now rancid society"? what's so rancid about it?
11 yrs age in my bedroom in the dark listening to this on my radio.....didnt understand it ,,,but always found it comforting..had hard childhood but this was somehow protective if that makes sense...think it was the way they spoke.
Stemajad - Glad you made this comment. This was also my experience, except it happened 20 years before yours. It is hard to explain the comfort it brings, but it is very real.....
I said this before but I will say it again here, is that the sound track fits superbly as it reminds me of my Dad in the back bedroom with his old vlave radio on the Short wave and marine band radio! turning the tuning dial sounded much like the soundtrack, if you had that in mind when you made this that is brilliant foresight.
This is total fucking bullshit.
The shipping forecast is totally redundant.
Radio 4 is the 2nd most popular radio show in the UK, and they still broadcast this shite?
Ships / boats have sophisticated technology to tell them all this shit and don't need a mainstream radio show to repeat it.
This isn't the olden days, this is nowdays man.

And is of sense forlorn,
A sadder and a wiser man,
He rose the morrow morn.

Well I think this is a superb production. There are other clips available without musical accompaniment for anyone who prefers it in its pure form.

Needed this for a project . . . without the music. As I'm making the music. Very disappointing.
