@Marillionmad If anyone says that building Tornado was a waste of money you can tell them from me that, as a Covenanter who has been paying towards the project for many years, it is MY money and I will decide how I spend it; no one else!
Aww Thanks barkz86. There's many a video that other people have posted that made my night too. Glad you enjoyed it. That's what its there for! ...It was an exciting night for me. Thanks again for all your comments.
For all the crap in the uk that's happening at the moment, and the useless politicians. This just goes to show what talent and skills we still have in this country. This is a remarkable feat of engineering achievement!!!
was on york station waiting for the duchess to come in from scarbro and i got talking to this old guy who said tornado was a waste of money and pointless.his interest he said was watching train movements.sorry to say this but there are a lot of fucking wierdos interested in trains,i mean why the fuck would you travel dozens of miles just to see a train go by
that sounds like a cutting and sarcastic remark,if it is theres not much i can say realy.i guess i am spoiled by the fact that over the last few weeks i have seen loads of steam trains go by only 2 minutes from my house on the main line so i guess if you want to see them you have to travel miles.still think though some, not all, are wierd
thats a good point and i have to admit ,i probably am too.this guy though pissed me right off.i also have to say i am lucky to live 3 mins from the milford loop and 50mins from the nymr and am surrounded by 3 main lines.
yes theres quite a few of it turning on the turntable at york and now based in same bay as mallard until early next year when it fully starts passenger runs
Thanks for the comment. As I understand it, National Express had sponsored the trial that night, so I guess the A1 Steam Locomotive trust had put the Nat Express logo on the tender in recognition of their support.
Hi - 2 things. A certain Castle class loco owner told me bluntly last year when I asked why he didn't seek 90mph running 4 his loco "75mph is to much at times on the UK's clapped out rough riding track, yet alone 90/100mph!". So unless they choose some very good condition track route, I think Tornado will have problems finding routes at times from what he said.
2nd - Tornado is a great loco but I don't think anyone believes it would beat an A4 for peak speed. Or do they...?
you dont know do you its not fully up and running until next year really is it.The ECML is a1 and a4 country they'll be no problems finding available routes =]
Sensational stuff for sure and a lot more to come which is even better. What was the reasoning behind the night running of this special? But it did add another dimension to all the videos.I quite like the unusual livery myself as it sure sets it apart from most.
As I understand it, the light grey is only the primer. She is due to have her full paint job over the next few weeks. This will be LNER-style Apple Green, with BRITISH RAILWAYS on the tender. I must say I agree. I like her in grey primer. Maybe it WOULD be nice to see her in unique livery of her own. I particularly like the painted wheels. It accentuates the size of those 6' 8" drivers. I hope they're going to paint the wheels in Apple green instead of plain black. That would look nice too.
I'm not sure about the reasoning behind the night time running (Maybe WolseleyAC will know?) I suspect that it has something to do with finding a path for the working that could guarantee her not being held up which would have spoiled the test. That is a very busy stretch of track in the daytime.
I now believe that was the case.Less traffic at night than daytime running on main lines.
Just noticed that head-lights are now used as this was not so in the great days of British steam many moons ago. There is something extra when filming steam action at night although it makes it a little more difficult for the fans to get their photos and tapes.
Thanks for the comment truckduck. It was only a few seconds, but I'll never forget the experience and the sheer joy at seeing her run at speed. I had info from a guy on the support coach who said the his satnav was indicating 89MPH at that point! How accurate that is, I can't be sure, but I can certainly believe it! Thanks again for yor comment. Cheers
The satnav was fairly accurate. There were at least 3 in the coach and all read the same. The odd bit was reading "Cotton Lane" and at one point "South Pasture" for the locations, although most of the time it was "Unknown Road". Don't tell anyone, but just after Northallerton, there was a reading of 91mph on the way back. Sorry about being 10 minutes late at Thirsk, we started out 15 minutes late from Tyne Yard after a water top up (lol)
Thanks for the info. It IS very interesting! You could feel the bridge shake as she went through! Just a few seconds, But a few seconds of euphoria! Thanks again for the info.
Hi, Thanks for your comments. This was taken on the return trip from Newcastle at about 00:19hrs, which means it must have been running roughly 10min late at that point. Worth waiting up for though. She sounded in fine fettle! Cheers
OK, point taken! Admittedly, perhaps that WAS a slightly poor choice of words. Thanks for the reminder! Nonetheless; it IS a tribute to those who designed (and by that, do we mean The Late Mr Peppercorn and his team, or the engineers of the A1 steam locomotive trust who designed the modifications? - sorry, couldn't resist the retaliatory pedanticism) and built her. They may have 'something to SAY about the word preservation' but surely they'd forgive my momentary lapse. Hats off to ALL of them!
@Marillionmad and also its not a replica...its the real deal.
