  • I used to do a smokin' Ethel Merman imitation, if I do say so myself.

  • Does anyone know if she recorded this on an album?

  • This was a perfect song for "The Merm". The only shame is that we weren't able hear her sing it when she was 35 or 40 years old (and not at 70 like in this clip).

And if anyone thinks that Ethel couldn't sing a ballad, just listen to "I Got Lost in His Arms" or "The Best Thing for You" from the "Annie Get Your Gun" and "Call Me Madam" albums respectively.

  • @TONYFROMWESTSIDE She's not flat!

  • @TONYFROMWESTSIDE what do you mean? she's out of key?

  • @TONYFROMWESTSIDE Ask any musician or singer who has played huge ACOUSTIC auditoriums

like the Merm did for decades on Broadway. The acoustics always raise the pitch. Ethel Merman

is THE BEST! Her voice was worn from much use booming America's favorite songs from a stage

without microphones into an audience of thousands. There have been VERY FEW performers of

her caliber in entertainment history, and we were lucky to have her. RIP Merman the magnificent!

  • @TONYFROMWESTSIDE

I am a music major, and I assure you she isn't flat.

  • You don't need a dictionary to define "pro" for you... all you need to do is look at a clip like this. Supremely confident, totally in command, and who cares if the song is wrong for her, and she is wrong for the song... you get the feeling that if the set fell down around her, she wouldn't even notice until after the applause had died down at the end. She was born to be in the spotlight, and I was lucky to have been born in the same century as she was. There's just no one like her, bless her!

  • One of the best voices of all time. Great song for a great lady.

  • No there will never be musicals that could ever ever be that great when they were the STARS!!!...so really she will always go down in BROADWAY history as the GREATEST belter who ever lived...she created for herself her own LEGEND!!!

(bows down to the ones who've gone before!)

  • What a great book. I love the line. THERE ARE THINGS ABOUT MY LIFE PEOPLE ARE NOT GOING TO KNOW FOR THE PRIVILEDGE FOR OWNING A LIBRARY CARD.

  • One great lady of the stage. I had the golden opportunity of playing in one of her concerts when she and her music director, Eric Knight, performed with the Richmond Symphony. She lit up the entire auditorium. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to hear her live and to experience her amazing stage presence and energy. BRAVA!!!!

  • @iteachbass Wow, how lucky of you!

  • at first I thought - oh this is not the song for merman...then she sells it.

  • She sang it like she'd been there...

  • That was great, thanks for posting it.

  • OMG, she was 70 years old the, remarkable voice still!

  • Girlfriend STILL had it.

  • @zaktop Yup, even at 70. Amazing.

  • Im not a huge fan of ethel's voice but omg that was beautiful, it brought tears to my eyes. A true diva :)

  • Did she ever record this song?

  • This was divine! Hadn't listened to Ethel in a while, and to hear her sing this great song..I was touched.

Absolutely beautiful, especially her sincere, but powerhouse ending. You just gotta love Ethel Merman!
