  • How incredible. I feel like truly brave men of conviction are so few and far between these days that just seeing this video is wonderfully refreshing. Mayor Sanders, you are a hero and I am so proud that elected officials like you live in my state.

  • I applaud mayor Sanders for changing his position in gay marriage, but I can't help but think this is sort of indicative of conservatives. They can't empathize with those that they consider out groups, unless those so-called out groups are their loved ones. Like I said, I'm glad he changed his mind, but would he have if his daughter hadn't been gay? I doubt it.

  • go gays! im not gay myself but have a couple of gay mates and there great people, im glad things are getting easier for homosexuals in the us, its a good step forward, took balls to do what this guy did!

  • Fag Marriage fails

  • mother fer made me cry, love this man

  • Don't let him fool you. San Diego is the most hateful violent right wing misogynistic place on earth. And while people here do tolerate gay men, they hate lesbians, because every guy here is a wife beating right wing obsessed misogynist, and all the women here are sexual masochists. That mayor does not belong here, he is way to noble of a person to even be living here, not to mention actually being the mayor of this horrid city.

  • respect.

  • This is just a little piece of beautiful!

  • You're right! it was!!

  • What a great man

  • Mr. San Diego Mayor, you have my respect. It takes courage to step forward in support of gay marriage. Thank you for taking that step for the people in your city.

  • Great speech.

that said, .looking at the comments, as a youtube viewer and a basically rational person I have had it with the right-wing religious nuts thrusting their "you're going to bun in hell" schtick. It's irrelevant, it's old, it's untrue, and it's indicative of the scare tactics a third grade teacher woudl use. Believe what you want, nobody is trying to force you otherwise, UNLIKE you, who don't seem to grasp the basic fact that America is a republic democracy and NOT a theocracy!

  • im wondering if hes democrat or republican, its not a big deal i completly agree with what he has to say but im just wondering

  • can somebody help me im gay and have a wife and daughter how do i tell them i need help im almost suicidle x

  • im sorry but your looking in the wrong place for answers, you wont get wat your looking for on youtube but if i can give you any bit of advice i say tell your wife and your daughter how you feel and be truthful but let them know you still love them (if you do, no offence i just dont know you) but just dont kill yourself, truthfully gayness is natural, your born gay wether you know it or not and to deny would just being doing you and yourself a disservice so.... good luck and hope it works out

  • @phil84mufc Seek help through whatever means are available but whatever you do, don't kill yourself. Life eventually finds a way of working itself out. Good luck to you.

  • Very human and very brave of him. To show his soul like this makes him a much bigger man, than those who spew forth hatred and bigotry

  • People used to say it was an abomination for blacks to marry whites. Look how ridiculous that looks now. It won't be long we will all look back and see how ridiculous it was for us to ever treat gays with any less respect or dignity than anyone else. We are all God's children and he loves us all.

  • a book written BY MAN says its wrong

    there is no god

  • God says its wrong and god made the bible.

    Psalms (14:1)

The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

    Proverbs (16:13)

Righteous lips are the delight of kings; and they love him that speaketh right.

  • god did not make the bible, men made the bible

how can something that doesnt exist make something?

  • God does exist,he made the bible and man and the universe.

    Psalms (22:28)

For the kingdom is the LORD's: and he is the governor among the nations.

    Psalms (23:6)

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

  • show me some actual proof he does exist

  • The proof is staring you in the face everyday you live on this earth is proof enough there is a creator.

    John (1:1)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

  • thats not proof, that can be explained by science

and quoting verses from a fictional book doesnt help your case

  • I'm quoting verses from a book of pure facts.

Only the ignorant would think the bible is fictional.

    Luke (4:4)

And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

    Psalms (14:1)

The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

  • no sorry only the ignorant would believe a fictional book written by man is full of facts

  • What's your explanation for life then,Hmm?

And don't give me any fictional crud like evolution or the big bang because they are both just foolish theory,s.

  • only ignorant people would call real theories and actual facts foolish

  • How can you call these "Actual facts" when you were never there to see them happen.

    Romans (1:32)

Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

  • same way you can claim the bible is "actual facts"

  • Yes, but i have a god to back me up to tell me what happened.

  • again show me actual proof god ever existed

  • once you grow up and quit living in fantasy land believing in fairy tales youll realize the real truth, there is no such thing as a "god"

  • Messed up meant to say "Longer" not "linger".

  • if there were really "tons of proof" "god" exists then you could show me actual proof

thanks for basically admitting i was right

only a fool would believe in "god"

  • see bella thats funny because one would argue (and correctly) that it is religion that is all faith and no facts

show me some actual proof (that isnt out of some fictional book) that there is a god

  • Really? My religon has a lot of facts, Check out Kent Hovinds website, find the truth in the bible.

    2 Timothy (3:16)

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

By the way that's proof out of a Truthful book.

  • really, sounds more like crap out of a fictional book

  • @bellakazza LOL, you said the bible and truth in the same sentence....LMFAO

  • @bellakazza all that is is proof whoever wrote the bible was crazy

  • @idaman12345 God wrote the Bible.

  • @bellakazza no man wrote the bible

  • @idaman12345 God wrote the Bible.

  • @bellakazza prove it

  • @bellakazza god is an entity and was never a person, christianity is just as bad as all the other religions, why not try having a personal relationship with god instead?

  • @123serioussam God became man at one time and that man was called, Jesus Christ.

I have a personal relationship with God.

    Christianity means Followers of Christ.

Not really a religion, but a way of life.

  • @bellakazza yeah but im guessing people in those days were a little more gullable about these things then they are today. i just struggle to belive something that powerfull when written in a book to have a major affect on my life, dont get me wrong i do belive in a creator of existence i just dont follow a certan religion id rather choose my own destiny in life, religion is a good way to manipulate people in to be good and get on in socieity.no disrespect and please excuse my spelling.

  • @123serioussam I too am not bound by the strings of Religion.

For I am freeed by Christ.

Read the Bible is what I say to do.

Read the whole thing and then make you're desion.

  • @bellakazza ok thanks

  • @bellakazza you are bound by religion

every time you go to church you allow yourself to be brainwashed

  • @idaman12345 You have been lied to and you have been deceved and brainwashed.

I am free in Christ. unlike you.

  • @bellakazza you go to church atleast once a week right?

to be told how to think and act right? youre brainwashed

and its sad that you dont know it

  • @idaman12345 I go to understand more and learn more about God and about Life and my relationship with him.

You go to a goverment controlled school right? well you are being brainwashed by that very school.

You are bound by the chains of sin and you don't even know.

  • @bellakazza are you told not to sin?

    thats controlling/brainwashing

i dont go to a government controlled school

    nice try though

if you got away from religion youd realize how brainwashed you are

  • @idaman12345 You have a reprobate mind.

You are the one who is foolish and can't think straight.

You have been bound by the chains of sin, maybe if you'd get away from your religion you'd think straight.

    2nd Thessalonian (2:11)

And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

  • @bellakazza reprobate is another word for free

    you have a brainwashed mind

    that is a fact

youre just too young to realize it

  • @idaman12345 Reprobate is another word for someone who is unprincipled and no conscience.

    Psalms (14:1)

The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

That is a fact, you are a lier.

Your just too far gone to see it.

  • @bellakazza that is your opinion

    not fact

religitards use that term for people who arent brainwashed by religion

youre the one thats too far gone to realize it

  • @idaman12345 No, it is fact, wether you like it or not.

You are far gone, and a lier and foolish.

    And opinionated.

I am not bound by religion because I am free by Christ.

You are bound by the chains of sin.

And Satans follower, and you are just doing what he wants you to do.

  • @bellakazza what have i lied about?

it is your brainwashed opinion that i am a fool to not be brainwashed by religion

the only one who is far gone, a liar and foolish is you

you are nothing more than a fool

  • @idaman12345 I wipe my feet of you, I have warned you and I have told you the truth and you still deny Christ and attack me, I tried and I will not say any more to you.

You were warned, so I make my leave, saying anything else would be too much.

This has proven to be a a fruitless endever with you.

  • @bellakazza it has because i refuse to be brainwashed by religion

    like you

  • @idaman12345 And you don't even know, he sure has won you.

  • @bellakazza "This is the word of god, promise"

  • Really? Cool!

Could you ask him to make a YT account and explain it all to us atheists?

  • @bellakazza

    you're funny in the head

there does not NEED to be a reason

    none whatsoever

just because you can not grasp how wonderful life and the universe in all its complexity is and are afraid of there being no reason, it doesn't mean there has to be a reason.

    Life is

  • You people think you know God so well. You think your flawed personal views are completely right and everyone who disagrees with them will go straight to hell. Get over yourself. If hell exists and people get sent to it for sinning belligerently, you're the one going to end up there.

  • so you support second class citizenship?

  • this was beautiful.

    i support gay marriage!

  • beautiful

  • This is truly heartwarming...he wears his heart on his sleeve. As a loving father, Mayor Sanders can see through all the bogus discrimination of gay people and make the right decision. It's all about love...

  • I love this. People do change.

  • Very moving.

  • Conservatives claim there is an active conspiracy to indoctrinate kids into accepting homosexuality, which in their mind, turns people gay. This evokes a powerful protective response in parents. This might explain why blacks, who tend to have children earlier than other ethnic groups making more of them parents, and older people, voted for prop 8 and other constitutional revisions like it.

Protect the children from intolerance and bigotry, not the truth.

  • I am a straight man. I don't have any issues with being gay or anything of the sort. I cried like a baby during this video. It was like watching a microcosm of social evolution unfurl in a matter of minutes. When I doubt this country and it's majority views, all it takes is something like this to reel me back in and make me feel better.

  • this is the perfect example of what people should realize. I really respect this man, especially after seeing this video.

  • It's hard to come out as gay, right, but sometimes I think it's harder for people to come out as supportive of gay marriage when they don't have to, especially when they grew up in or are still in an environment where there's pressure to be against it.

What a courageous guy this Mayor Sanders is...

  • Thank you for your candor and heart, Mayor Sanders!

  • bullshit

  • I see. No on H8

  • so youre saying just because he has personal view of the pain that gay people go through his decision is unjustified? GREAT logic.

  • re-examine the video, you twit. he admits it.

  • Completely moving. They should have aired part of this for the "No on 8" movement! I still can't believe it passed. It's sooooo sad.

  • this was beautiful, so meaningful, and I have so much respect for him for going public about his opinion although it might hurt his image to some people. bravo.

  • thank you mayor sanders-no on 8!

  • Right On!

  • NO on 8! GAYS ARE PEOPLE TOO!!!

  • I am rarely impressed by a politician, but this did it. I know this was a politically dangerous thing for him to do, but he is a perfect example of doing what is right - no matter what the consequences are.

  • almost make me cry

  • the separate but equal analogy is perfect...people need to get that

  • NO on H8

  • This was so moving, I emailed it to several friends. This man has guts and soul. And he shows that you can grow and change for the better at any time in your life.

  • Kaboom, politically injuring but from the heart. Cheney could have been more forthcoming and truthful when he had the uncynical stage in his career.

  • Domestic partnerships and civil unions don't grant the same federal rights of marriage. For example a gay domestic partner ( or in a civil union) cannot sponsor his partner (if this partner is not american).

    Vote NO on discrimination!

    Vote NO on bigotry!

    No on 8!

    Please

  • You can't vote another persons basic civil rights away no matter how much you hate. Even if 8 passes it will be challenged in the Supreme Court and then all the State marriage bans will be thrown out in one decision. Separate church and hate vote No on 8!!!

  • I don't see the correlation between gay marriage and incest.

Your type is the worst kind of scum. The same type that turned to violent opposition of interracial couples years ago.

  • STOP H8

    AND S8TANS FOLLOWERS! ...

  • Wow. Made me cry. Please remember to vote NO on proposition 8.

Separate is not equal. Don't add inequality into our constitution.

  • I'm glad he decided to do what is right and treat gays and lesbians as equal under the law. Vetoing the resolution would have denied them their civil rights as citizens under our constitution.

  • Most of those for prop 8 actually believe wickedness never was happiness. We believe perverting the laws of nature is wicked. We believe we are all children of God, and that He has given everyone a way to bear their burdens, and that inappropriate sexual tendencies are just that- a burden.

We all have burdens. Some of us succumb to them, some of us learn and grow by working through them.

We just don't want to be part of a society that accepts succumbing.

  • You're right...

Time to make divorce illegal and make women subservient to men, you know, the way marriage originally has been for the last 5 thousand years.

And lets not forget the wicked blacks of the line of cain, who's ancestor killed the noble able, and were destined by god to be our slaves.

God made the world for fair skinned men, and marriage their kingdom, to rule over wife and children, and made the lesser races as slaves.

    P.S:

    ***sarcasm***

  • Good point. Let's take measures to stop people from succumbing to Christianity, or for that matter, any sort of religious belief, because there are many who no doubt consider that to be an 'evil behaviour'. How are you going to prove them wrong?

If we all thought the way you did, I think society would suffer a lot more problems than just 'succumbing'.

  • Do you actually have the audacity and gaul to say that gays and lesbians aren't people? Are we second class citizens even though we pay the same taxes as you and follows the same laws? How is it, that because I am a natural born citizen, I have the capability to become president of the United States, but cannot get married under your belief system? How is it, that by our country's laws I can lead this entire country and represent it to the rest of the world, but not marry someone that I love?

  • In addition, If we are to say that we should not redefine what marriage is and that should be an absolute; then I ask you: During the women's suffrage movement, how many men do you think thought that not allowing women to vote and be equal was something that never should be redefined and should've remained absolute? I direct this question to the women voting Yes. How willing would you be to give up your right to vote? And to the married couples: How willing would you be to give up your marriage?

  • Hey Summer-

If you don't want to marry someone of the same sex, you're free not to. As a straight male, I'm glad I was allowed to marry the woman I fell in love with.

Why can't you let others make the same choice? Maybe invest your energy in helping a hungry person instead of persecuting others.

    Peace.

  • BitRidr

Don't waste your breath on him

  • Loving v. Virginia comes to mind when I hear arguments against gay marriage. Those couples committing miscegenation should have just settled for civil unions, as the majority of god fearing people found their mixing of the races as immoral. Like those of the day argued, not so long ago, just like you do so now, no rights were being violated. They could still marry who they wanted, so long as it was someone of their own race. I guess those people wanted to have their "evil" behavior" accepted.

  • wow..."evil behavior"?...really?

  • I regret to inform you that marriage is now overseen by the government... not exactly a new development. I guess there are negatives on both sides of the fusion-of-church-and-state coin, as society, and therefore the government, is taking marriage in a way a certain sector doesn't approve of. Don't operate under the illusion that you live in a monolithic culture.

Consider how ridiculous you would find it to call Christian beliefs 'evil behaviour', and you'll start to see the flaws in logic...

  • The only evil behavior is the bigotry of people who want to enforce their irrational fears about gay people and homosexuality on the rest of us. And if you want people who engage in "evil behavior" not to be able to marry, maybe you should start a campaign to forbide felons from marrying, and leave the rest of us alone.

  • Think, yes: force *other* people to live the way you think they should *merely* because you think that's best, no.

  • I hope California does the right thing and votes 'NO' on Prop 8.

  • Our founding fathers also put faith in the judicial branch to override the tyranny of the majority. Should judges override the legislated social injustices of the people? It has, and by God's grace may it never fail in this duty

How many people thought women were not equal to men? or blacks to whites? how many people voted these injustices down? Go pray to your mob, and pray it never deems you an enemy to its will, I'll put my trust in the courts

Grant justice for all and vote No on Prop. 8

  • aceisey, it is with justice that the supreme court rules on cases based on their interpretation of the constitution. I'm sure you believe in the unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, right? If you do, you can thank the judicial branch for upholding and protecting these rights countless times throughout the history of our country.

  • Bravo!! Bravo!!!

May we all have the courage to act with dignity and do right by all the members our our community. May we take example today, to act likewise in the future.

    Thank you Jerry!!

  • What a wonderful man. It is rare to see a politican with such integrity and from what I've heard of the Republicans this is espicially rare. Brings a lump to my throat, thank you Mayor Sanders.

  • Much repect for this man!

    Vote no on prop 8!

    Vote for Love!

  • I lived in SD in 4 years and never knew this about Mayor Sanders. This made me tear up that he was so emotional about it and dared to stand up for equality. Good for him!!

  • same as well.

  • When in doubt: Do the right thing. And you know what that means.

  • i cried the first time i saw this and it still gets me a year later.

  • That got me chocked up, that was a very emotional speech. It's wonderful to see someone in government finally understand what's it's liked to have your relationship and very life judged and treated like it's no good.

  • What a fantastic guy. He did the right thing, there's no doubt about that.

    Very cool video. :)

  • This makes me cry.

  • Very moving indeed. Too bad many other mayors don't feel this way!

  • Every time I watch this clip, I tear up... he's got my vote.

  • The separate but equal statement is soooo true.

  • I love the emotion behind it. Go Mayor Sanders.

  • Rock on Mayor Sanders.. Thank YOU

  • Gays are just another group to blame for all evil in this world, when in reality all evil is caused by selfish, hypocritical egomaniacs who can't envision equality or fairness.

Haters will always seek someone lower than they are, while living in desperate fear of being the lowest of all (a fear that may be justified).

To oppress and discriminate against people on the grounds of their sexual orientation is no longer fashionable. Perhaps that is why hateful bigots prefer anonymity.

  • Thank you Mayor Sanders. You've got a heart of gold!

  • This is incredible!!! At least there is one politician in this country who will actually say and do what he believes and not just what people want to hear!!! Bravo!!!

  • Stunning. Leading from the heart -- what a concept.

  • He has my vote (even though I am not Republican).

  • Our country would be a whole lot better off now if more politicians had such integrity.

  • what a great father and mayor!! finally! 2 in 1!! thats unheard of! hehe... way to back up your daughter as well as all gays and lesbians..

  • very well said....

  • Way to go, Mayor Sanders. Bless you for for doing the right thing.

  • I'm gay.

  • I love Maureen O'Connor. Thanks.

  • Mayor Sanders is a courageous political leader and clearly and awesome Dad and friend. Thank you for you courage to show what it is to be a real man!

  • bravo, bravo.

  • Wow! That was powerful Mayor Sanders, thank you!

  • Incredibly powerful! Thank you Mayor Sanders!

  • So, if every political person had a gay child, the world would apparently be a more equal place...

  • What about Dick Cheney? His daughter is a lesbian.....
