@OktoberFilms well in a strange turn of events ive just bought this camera like 1 hour ago, it really is quite a beatiful bit of kit for my first proper camera im well happy
@BigBaggaBlues the Canon rebels are widely known, not only for pictures, but is famous for extraordinary video quality, one of the best VIDEO quality digital slr's. It is widely used by the professional skateboarding community to film, being the most favorite camera for filming, second in line to the dcr vx series.
@alexfair8589 Maybe both. I shot everything in 1080 to begin with and it does seem a bit jumpy. I'm using 720 now and it looks much more stable. Check the clip I uploaded yesterday to see the difference.
@OktoberFilms i heard the type of SD card you use can affect the frame rate and quality of the final video. Have you or has anybody else experienced this?
@alexfair8589 I bought a 16GB Kingston Class 4 card with the camera and have never had problems with full buffers, lag or anything else. I read at the time that you needed class 6 for video, but the store didn't have any. Bought what they had, thinking I'd replace it soon, but I still use the original card.
@alexfair8589 Nope, recording in 720p because of the frame rate. The first clips, including this one, were shot in 1080p but I don't see the point in 20fps. Anyways, I'm passing this camera on and getting the 60D in a few days. I'm bound to post some 60D footage here real soon.
@OktoberFilms the 60D? awesome... that's the camera ive been looking at now actually... i think i'm going to get it in the next few weeks. i'll stay tuned to your channel and look for the test footage :D
@TheTiivik The 500D shoots at 1080p20 and 720p30. That's the options we have. The 550D has more shooting modes and manual controls. Thanks, Canon, for leaving us early adopters out in the cold.
@LithiumHammer I'd get the 550D instead of this one if you're interested in video. I posted another video last night that shows better what it can do.
@times9 It can get pretty bad at 1080p, but I haven't seen any problems when shooting in 720p. Haven't tried the Nikons either, so I can't say which ones are better.
@suutari13 Its getting better. It has to, as Vimeo is a real contender. Check the one I uploaded yesterday. Not bad quality at all if you elect the 720 version.
you may check chinese video website, they suck even more ! mostly are 15fps/second, and a video like that 720p, can't be damned like 240p or worse ! can't do with it !
Hey, I am looking to buy my first SLR camera and was wondering if the Canon 500D is a good choice? Also should I buy it with the lens kit or just the camera body?
if this is your first, definately get this one. its even got a mode where you can gradually learn how to get used to the camera. look at other reviews of this camera, especially "Canon EOS 500D / Rebel T1i review" by cameralabs. amazing review. and get the lens kit, as you wont be able to take pictures of anything without it. and im also guessing you dont want to pay another £/$500 for the lens too, so just stick with the kit. it works amazing.
No, that is incorrect. You can film up to 4GB. That is closer to 10 minutes, if I remember correctly (depending on resolution). I have never hit that limit, so I'm not sure.
The T1i CAN focus when taking videos - you just have to enable it via a live view function. It's slow, and the noise of focusing does get recorded so you'll hear it during playback - but it does have the ability to focus during movies.
@Bestofshooter88 You're right, it is a photo camera, but the film quality is fine. Shooting video is a bit awkward because of the form factor, but you'll have that problem with the 5D2 and 7D as well.
Pictures taken at 12800 ISO are very grainy, but it does allow you to shot portraits with a single candle as the light source. At 6400 ISO, the image quality is much better and you can still shoot in very low light. I had an EOS 350D before this one and the 500D blows it away in sensitivity. Also, the flash is actually usable on the 500D.
How are the pictures when taken at the highest ISO? I'm looking for a camera to shoot in low light. heard a lot about this camera but only seen a few images at the highest ISO setting and wasn't not impressed with them.
What exactly is compression? I'm trying to get into all this photography and cinematography business but I still need to learn a lot. Thanks in advance.

4gb limit per video, 1080p = 12 min, 720p = 18 min. But once the 4gb limit is hit, it will start over with a new file.
So: 32gb card, 1080p = 96 min, 720p = 144 min
