Like Rudi, he needed to be seen LIVE at his peak to appreciate his gifts. Like Rudi the USSR's loss was the West's gain. Too many second-rate 'porteurs' masquerading as ballet dancers got a much-needed kick up the backside & standards rose - certainly in British ballet. The West gave them much more freedom of artistic expression and access to great choreographers.
This video doesn't even begin to show Mikhail's talent. This really isn't about him at all. Just because the first clip is of him, and a few seconds of him, a couple of more times...doesn't even begin to show his true talent.
I don't know how anyone could call him a second rate dancer.
Misha did not dance with the Bolshoi. He actually danced with the Kirov. He moved to the USA to dance with one of the worlds finest dance companies, as did alot of other Stars in the dance world!
this "one of the worlds finest dance companies" has never staged Grigorovitch's "Spartakus" or "the Stone Flower" for example, so how American ballet is all of the sudden among the "finest"?...
Never heard that saying before. If it is to suggest Bujones is the better dancer, I think that's NOT apt. Baryshnikov demonstrates more technical ease, strength, and performance dimensions than Bujones...though Bujones' feet and leg line were superior...just my opinion of course.
and Baryshnikov was too small in stature, thus unfit for the most ballets at the Bolshoi... so he chose to move abroad to dance in second-rate ballet.
@tzar2007 That's absolute bollocks you sad lying cunt. Moreover, he was with the Kirov not Bolshoi, if you're going to chat total shit at least get your facts straight, you sad, bitter, retarded lying cunt.
i'm no expert in his biography, i only see he is a second rate dancer that made his way in the West by defecting the USSR where he couln't compete with dancers taller than him.
@tzar2007 I believe he did " compete" and Wins tthe GOLD medal at varna - Misha was interested in new choreography , seeing NYCB " Balanchine" Neo- Clasical style perfornend in Liningrad was a major factor in his decision to defect
"misha" was interested in "new choreography" because he knew he had no chance with "old choreography" as is the case with those who unable to do things properly always try to use the term "new" as an argument or excuse.
@tzar2007 I dont think he had a problem with the choreography at all , the problem was the type cast system , who wants to dance the peasent pas de duex or bluebird forever ? Besides he had it made like no other dancer in leningrad / russia at the time , he was well taken care of, so his choice to leave was to serve his atistic interest not becouse he had no chance
his stature was his problem (or an advantage) and he made a problem out of it by dancing the main characters whereas he indeed was fit only to dance the peasants.
@tzar2007 Wow I must say that you seem to have a "know your place " attitude towards ballet. Misha was brasin and smart enough to brake out of that " cast system " and thus leading him to become the most identifiable ballet persona in the world of the last 40 yrs . The way I look at it , this is not his problem but thiers , "Stature" or not -Thier loss .
"identifiable" belongs to pop culture, not to adsolute values art that ballet is; and Baryshnikov is nothing more than a pop idol made famous through mass media, but there's God above that sees who is really what.
@tzar2007 And I see the writings of a sad fucking cunt. That's you my friend, you know fuck all so why not go and wank off your underage victims you fucking fucktarded cunt and stop chatting shit about shit you know fuck all about you cunt. Peace xxxx
@JRhuewing Bujones was one of the greatest dancers and techers of all time but Barishnikov bring to this world something new)he is just more than a dancer relly)

@tzar2007 I wouldn't say being Artistic Director of ABT is "second-rate ballet," exactly.
