@Delticola It is a sort of a joke, like the one guy strapped a military rocket on the back of a chevy to see what he can do with the footage, and well it took him a few 1000 miles an hour and almost wiped out a family in a car, but then he swerved and flew into the mountains, crashing and burning.

I liked the idea. The problem was just overconfidence. He never thought on going eastwards because he intended to go to up approximately 2,700 meters and at that altitude the wind was westwards. But the balloon went up to 5,000 meters and too fast for him to correct by freeing some balloons. At 5,000 meters the wind is southeastward and then he probably started to go down too fast (because he had freeing too much balloon in the hurry to correct) and landed in the ocean.

Why did he go up so much more than he should? Because he wanted to break the record (19 hours). In his last trip he had used 500 balloons and now he had 1,000.

He didn't know how to operate the GPS receiver. Again overconfidence. He thought he wouldn't really need it. He probably thought it was more like a toy and that it would sound good in the media.

He made contact by radio with the rescue team and, if he knew to operate the GPS, he would be dry and warm now and planing his next attempt.

Perhaps he was raptured.

Perhaps by taking a cellphone and GPS his God decided that his faith was less than it should have been, a bit like lightning rods on churches.

I live here near, in Joinville - Brasil (sorry my English). What he mades was stupid because in certain time he ask for help because he didnt know how to operate the GPS device with him in fly. But the most awesome was he didint know the direction of the winds. I dont understand it till now. Some comments here indicates he was unpolite in the parapents courses months ago. In this region there are many dangerous places and inhospitable and he will need help. God save him.
