  • 8:24 Does Gandolf not know that it is terribly rude to point one's hand at others?

  • Thats 1 epic ring there too bad it isn't real

  • Elvish kings' shadows luke just fabulouuus. ;]

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA

  • I didn't even know there was a LOTR movie before the Jackson's till now........I feel so ashamed -______-

  • At the last part of this clip Gandalf hugs himself because he's so ALOOOOOONE!!!

  • Bakshi is an excellent artist. There's disputing that. But it's all this detail and rotoscoping put into this movie that just makes it far too hard to watch and enjoy. The body-language and sudden shift of expression makes the characters far too human for an animation, which isn't a bad thing. I think the over-all problem with the movie is the script and directing. Like in the end, Gandalf circling and waving his arms like a mad-man. It's a little over the top.

  • 8:20

    Now that's just scary lolll

  • 0:34

    Timothy Gandalf?

  • 8:16 = mindfucked

  • i like that little tango they had at the end.

  • right at 1.39 haha like a play performed by 5 year olds

  • lol the beginning of this is so fucking gay

  • If sir Ian McKellen had that long bear...wonder how he would look like?

  • there are so many similar parts of this version and Peter Jackson's. Makes me wonder...

  • Ralph Bakshi

  • Oh my god I haven't seen this in years. But I'm all excited for the Hobbit and wanted to rewatch :D

I remember really liking Aragorn in these.

  • animation style looks similiar to Filmation or Hanna-Barbera

  • @nobodysperfect06 you cant really judge the animation style right on the beggining because it sure gets better.

it's rotoscoping, the actors move with realism

  • I always thought Frodo was extremely cute in this one! ^^)

  • do u have the hobbit?

  • @minimaximus1 /watch?v=vcllH6Kslw8

  • I like Gandalf's interpretive dance.

  • Its remarkable how close some of the background a feel of this film is to Jackson's version. Although the whole thing does have a really trippy feel about it!

  • EH? Did 17 years actually pass? I haven't had the chance to read the book, but in the new version they made it look like only a couple days passed, if that.

  • gandalf scared me a lot

  • smeagol sounds so gay.

  • frodo sounds like angry kid

  • Very goog animators, those clothes seems very realistics...

  • @Achmeron This animated film used the rotoscoping technique which traces real actors movements and whatnot. Disney also employed this technique in many of their films like Snow White.

  • To the people that say this is better than the Peter Jackson version, you need to get your heads looked at !!

the voice acting in general is awful (but in some parts surprisingly good).

the layout of the dialog and scenes is messy (again there are some part which are surprisingly good).

how ever i really enjoyed the film none the less. the scenery and how everything looked (mostly) was beautiful and pretty accurate to my image of Middle earth!

  • lol @ the silhouette fight scene in the beginning. We did more realistic silhouette fights in high school theatre.

  • 7:02 AWWW how cute is that

  • wow.... i am so high right now:P

  • Don't freeze at 6:59

  • 8:26 Gandalf Wants You! To Destroy the One Ring.

  • When I was a tiny girl, I had an abnormal phobia of rotoscope animation & shadow puppets. The part at the Prancing Pony nearly had me shitting bricks, but the opening part has that "so bad it's hilarious" quality to it. Imagine if they did this for Harry Potter.

Damn, I wouldn't want to be Smeagol's boyfriend. XD

Both animated movies depict Gandalf as like the ultimate badass creepy old man.

  • I like Peter Jackson's version more, but this one is still good. I love the dark atmosphere and the backgrounds of the forests

  • I must say this film is much more engaging than Jackson's watered down version.

  • wow this is trippy lol.

  • @andysim232 you should see the yellow sumbarine movie

  • wow so many layouts, angles and ideas went straight to the new films

  • lol the eyes are proper trippy its like there all on pills

  • Gandalf is a bit over-dramatic in this...lol.

  • the 70s a simpler time

  • Brilliant! I was born in 1978, and never seen this before.

  • Wow, uh.. pretty brief final convo between Gandalf and Bilbo, wouldn't you agree?

  • It's good, but i prefer Jacksons version alot more.

  • I cant decide if I like the Bakshi art better or the Rankin/Bass. Just watched Return Of The King. Preeeetty rad, but I think this wins. Wish they'd finished it.

  • A much more accurate portrayal of Frodo than the annoying sacrificial lamb portrayal of the Jackson films.

  • I didn't know that someone made an animation movie of the L of the R =\

  • God! That intro music is like ear-rape to me!

  • this film portrays the book accurately, unlike the Peter Jackson's version.. Though I admit I enjoy the 2000 films much more. The book will always be the best though. If you only read one book in your lifetime, make it LOTR, and don't be in a rush to finish it.

  • @Ovningskora

    @Ovningskora

Why do people say that? I loved this, but it certainly isn't more accurate then Jackson's. About on the same level.

People have to take into account that certain events in the book just weren't cinematic. Great to read, and fans would loved to see those scenes, but they wouldn't have worked. I do think all the adaptions, including the Rankin/Bass, are good adaptions.

  • @sunnybrand

Well, just by watching this first part you can see that Jackson left out a huge detail that Ralph kept in.

  • @Ovningskora

    It's tit for tat.

  • @sunnybrand Both versions have inaccuracies. This version's scene of the black riders chasing Frodo is more accurate than Jackson's version. I agree, certain parts of the trilogy are long with too much dialog, example, Tom bombadil's speech.

  • @Ovningskora Are you serious, not only does this film mispronounce half the words and screw up a bunch of dialogue, it also changes about every scene and makes all the characters look gay

  • 7:51 he's like WTF DUDE!?!?!?!

  • Why are Bilbo and Frodo the only normal looking Hobbits. :/

  • @UACmarine2O8 Yeah right

  • If anyone sees this, watch the RANKIN and BASS version! it;s my chidhood watch. i'm just trying this versaion now!

  • oh fuck. whats that?

  • nice upload.

  • I found it to be beautiful.................and quite true to the original***

  • Bakashi did a great job on this film. Is areal shame people still criticize it even though its a really underrated version compared to Jackson's films. If he completed the film it might not have gotten so much stick.

  • @nukem11 Jackson's film owes a lot to this one for both plotting (what to keep in and what to cut out) and even individual shots....good stuff.

  • @nukem11 IT was only after I watched this that i remembered how much balls this movie sucks

  • i remember watching this as a kid

  • the beggining is so fuckin WEIRD

  • Yeah it really is! The animation in this movie really takes getting use to!

  • its all fucking wierd

  • LOL!
