  • I love this video so much! The other great crossword video on youtube is "Vow to Vowels"

  • it's an art form

  • this is a really funny video. its very dry and intellectual. hipsters would love it!!!!!

  • Brilliant.

  • how could there be 116 dislikes? This is my favorite youtube video of all time.

  • You probably have to have worked in (or at least done as a hobby) comics, graphic design, or fine art to really get everything.

And when you do, it's awesome.

  • This is so much bullshit, haha. still enjoyed it though

  • i can

  • I don't know why but I can't stop watching this

  • how very interesting....

  • What rubbish this is. Letter-counting is clearly the most under-valued role. Few appreciate the almost transcendent beauty of '7 down'.

  • There was something weird going on for me where the video was really blocky and laggy. Thanks to this weird effect, I could swear a rotted, wraith-like human face appeared in the crossword at 5:04 , right beofre it switches to the other puzzle. Creepy...

  • the voice caught me.

  • I actually saw a difference between the two ink styles Garfield showed ... holy fuck, my inner conscience is starting t sound a bit like him. This is bad.

  • I found several creeper faces.

  • WHY DID I JUST SIT THROUGH ALL OF THIS

  • the penciler hes though 1 who gets all the fan mail, all the ladys know his name :D

  • Will Ferrell?

  • mrweebl send me here

  • :)

  • God, I hope none of this is true.

  • i agree

  • that's a rather uncommon kind of humor, but i like it :D

i'd have problems writing a praody like that.

  • i came here because weebl faved this

  • This was depressing

  • Weebl favv'ed this!!!

  • "This one drawing is worth ... almost two hundred dollars"

    Laughed so hard. Great Job!

  • This guy kinda looks like Will Ferrel from the front.

  • He takes cross words serious. Why?

  • It's brilliant. You should make a film :)

  • Is this done with rotoscope?

  • ironic.. how.. every single one of the crosswords in this.. was made on a computer ;o

  • Like if Mr.Weeble brought you here

  • Woody Alleneqse

  • I have issues with lady grid men.

  • This is outstanding!

  • HAHAHaHA Its not hilarious

  • This is impressive, funny, smart and ...er, lots more. I have sent this film to all Swedish magazine editors that I make crossword puzzles for, and they are all laughed as much as I did (and still do). There´s still some clever humour out there! Thanks!

  • LOL, this is rediculous.

  • Cool animation

  • Thank goodness for the computer-created crosswords.

  • this is fantastic!

  • Hubert Quizlet is a great penciler

  • Ineffably brilliant. A masterpiece, down to the last "um" and "er".

  • This is really awesome, well done.

  • awesome. Mingus at the end fitted perfectly - "orange was the color of her dress, then blue silk"

  • "believe me it's well insured"

  • loll

  • WOW..

after a year of searching i found it again haha

  • This is brilliance. :D

  • that's okay. your life isn't worth that much anyway.

  • Blackworx, people who post that sort of comment wouldn't have done anything interesting with 7 minutes anyway, except maybe finding 2 3:30 videos and saying the same thing on both..

  • This is the most hysterical thing i have ever seen.

  • I axicitained to appoilightelietly.

  • Oh, yeah so you had to complete the plexiations. I get it, opiationylition

  • Mandell Oskidaro

'He has that fiery Latino temperament'

    lol

    All your animations rock!

    interesting names aswell...

  • Good God is this hilarious!

    Emotional... uh.. issues

    Hugo von Ruler

Hubler's corners are subdued... ironic... self-aware

  • Comment removed

  • I swear in england the guy who does the clues also draws the whole thing up. I guess english things are always done on the cheap :P

  • oh yeah, all the ladies dig the penciler...

hes the most glamorous role in the box team..

    XD so funny

  • This really hurt my head. I actually tore at my hair in one part of this animation.

See, I'm a layout artist at a newspaper. And, day in, and day out, I actually download, edit, place, resize, and relayout, among many other things, crossword puzzles. And I know for a fact that we download them all from a generic company that produces them for broadsheets all over the world.

And, to see this... yeah, it's a cartoon. But you have no idea how close to home this hits.

    This is well done.

  • LOL genius

  • Very well done! The voice-over work was superb.

  • Ah, Tuski, my man ... if madmax is an aussie (entirely possible, given the origin of his moniker), then 'baloney' is the correct spelling.

Of course, that doesn't make madmax2 any less of a humourless goose, but ....

  • question is, how do they spell wanker in australia?

  • just like that

  • Brilliant!

  • Hugo Von Ruler! LOL

  • smooth humor!

  • Computer crosswords should be for computer-internet sales yea, but how long would it take to people at home have computer programs to make their own cyber-crosswords?

news paper crosswords should always be made by human hand, but the question is can people really appreciate that?

  • Quite possibly the best dry humour cartoon I've seen all day.

  • haha, beautiful!

  • A lot of talent here. Really enjoyed this. Wouldn't it be nice if Hollywood could produce work as imaginitive as this for us. When you guys get to Hollywood can you keep your work as fresh as what you're doing here. 'til then, will look forward to your next installments. Thank you.

  • Hahahahahah

  • you cant be friggen serious.

  • i wanna grow up to be an inker!

  • amazing animation

  • Sheer bliss! Especially moving when he chokes up with emotion. As I am about to lose my job thanks to technology I really related to this. Sob!

  • Bumfry, what a legand.

  • Really good video. I didn't realise how important a crossword inker is.

  • wtf???

  • This is a verry important subject we need to talk about more.

I think we would like some more information about the symmetrical (mirrored) crossword thou. (Verry good animation)

  • This is a fictional representation of real life it seems...

I learned alot about the subject today:)

Thank you for this excellent film ^_^

  • It begins with something quite probable, then it fades into the absurd. Very entertaining.

  • ...some good artists are going hungry...

    Brilliant work. Awesome.

  • I've wondered what a Christopher Guest film would look like in animation...

  • Genius

  • I love this video, the subject is SOO rare, with extremely subtile humor and a noire style, this video rocks.

  • lol noire? No.. no its not noire at all. I agree the humour is subtle though

  • Yep friend it is noire, the main character in this movie is somehow depressed and you should notice other subtile details :)

  • Sheer genius and creativity blended together! It has got the flavour of Allen's short movies, its paradoxical, provocative yet intriguing sense of absurd.

The very fact it keeps you glued up to the end it's testimony of its uniqueness. In its own right a tiny masterpiece! Congratulations.

  • awsome video

  • Wow, this caught me by surprise! Superb video, very funny and intelligent, unlike anything else I have ever seen.

  • :P interesting

  • Brilliantly subtle humour. More please.

  • Wow. I can't believe I watched the whoooole thing.

  • funny...kind of reminds me of the office...

  • But everything is up to human work. If we stop from working or if we turn our faces to a diferent direction all machines and stocks will surelly stop and loose their presence and fiery-ness.

  • i. hate. my. job.

  • awesome. It has a very Christopher Guest mokumentary feel to it.

  • THis is fake!!!, do not allow this video to distort your idea of how crosswords are made

I am crossword designer, and alot of what is said here is bunk. they dont call us the box team.

Also, the penciler often does the counting, .

He left out the most important person, the cross consultant. This is the guy who checks to see if the vertical and horizontal words make sense

    chad bumfrey did not exist.

  • of course. this is for fun. =)

  • dude, your job seams. how do i put it. bland maybe? just one of many negative words that could be said.

  • But Hugo von Ruler did?

  • is there not a program that can do this now? like honestly, plug the answers in a machine, and it should be able to put them all together. I used a little program to make one for a school project back in the day, so there has to be a industrial scale crossword creation program.

of course, with it being deisgned to a specific item, the crossword, i would assume whoever made it would charge an arm and a leg.

  • It's a joke.

  • god i also love this kind of humor

  • loovvvvvved it. very nice job

  • suttel yet hilarious

  • you meant subtle... and that's what I was thinking to say. =)

the video gave me subtle laughs and sly smiles. =)

  • It brings a tear to my eye, for I install Pagination Software at newspapers, and any remaining "Paste-up Artists" retire. I started as a PA myself, and once created 14 rubylith overlays for a single full page promo, i.e. "Overlay 7: mask from magenta and add 20% to cyan". The damn computers have removed the personal touch that resulted in my jungle scene printing purple because the camera guys followed the instructions wrong. As a result, this vid touched my soul.

  • i'm ok with people that hires up intelectuals to build stock databases for conputers puzzle co.'s So that's reality!, sorry. there's a paralel line between intelectual artists and fierry technological owners. now how u deal with that.

  • I would watch anyone so monotone this long but this was so worth it. SO funny!

  • very entertaining and humorous in its special way! thank you for this video.

  • *giggles*.. I loved this! very smart and funny.. wonderful video..

  • Ah gosh, I just adore this type of humour. Like a piece of dry bread but deliciously yummy. :D I'm only in my teens, but I love this! Well done Mr. OrangeRaisin!

  • barely repressed savagery lol.

  • all the ladies know the 'pencillers' name. crosswords are so important to this world.

    ...

  • theres only 3 greed on you

  • i like the latino fiery grial puzzle 'n the modern stile

  • Awesome!

  • Absolutely brilliant!

  • Genius.

  • This is really funny even at 7 minutes I really enjoyed right through.

  • Fantastic!

  • hehehe. I enjoyed it. 'twould be great to watch stoned.

  • Umm...everyone but you, perhaps. This was totally hilarious.

  • Lastninja, there are plenty of videos on here where people fall into waiting pies or step on noisemakers. Why don't you wash your mouth with some soap and tune into those? Maybe you need something less subtle, like those.

  • This is honestly one of the best videos on YouTube. I love every single bit of it and have shared it with friends, as a friend shared it with me. Incredibly nuanced pronunciation and delivery with great accompanying animations, complimented by sublimely crafted tidbits of bullshit. Blue socks, JOE-HAN GUT-IN-BERG, insured and worth 200 dollars, the monks, aristocrats, Hugo von Ruler, cariscuro effect, subDUUUED, fiery Latino temperament...and so much more.

  • Barely repressed savagery.

  • So you consider the absurd pronunciation of Johann Gutenberg part of the game? (To explain this, let me say that any speaker of German would have to write the name as DSHOUHENN GATTINBOERG to reach the pronunciation of the video; for English speaking people: the name is pronounced somewhat like: YO-HUN GOOTEN-BEAR-G.)

  • Because a few people have commented on this now, I should explain for the record that, yes, the mispronunciation of Gutenberg's name was deliberate.

A quibble I expected to see but, so far, haven't: Why does a guy who can't pronounce "Gutenberg" have no trouble with the word "chiaroscuro"? Wouldn't Garson be likely to mispronounce that as well?

This is one of those little inconsistencies I would probably correct if I had the chance to do it all over again.

  • Dear OrangeRaisin, I think there is nothing to correct in this great little peace of art. Playing with language and "typical" errors is both funny and skilful. (Just think of the way a certain company pronounces the name of the greek goddess of victory 'NAIKIII' instead of 'NEEEKE'.)

    ;-)

  • No. Don't 'fix' anything. It's a perfect example of people being absorbed into their own little worlds and sticking to the things they 'know' and ignoring the rest.

Ever hear an intelligent person flub a word and still think they're right about the pronunciation? This is like that, except it's Garson!

  • @OrangeRaisin I've got to kind of disagree. This is perfect as is. The thing about Garson is that he sounds so confident (despite his insecurities) that you find yourself wondering when he's pronouncing things right and when he isn't. He gets chiaroscuro right but leaves you wondering whether or not you had always pronounced Gutenberg right? Do I say weigh in or weight in?

Anyway, I think it's perfect as is. Probably my fav thing on youtube in the last couple of years. well done.

  • This is hilarious! I love it!

  • is there a science to making this type of video so incredibly boring and disturbing? It's good and all, but you know what I mean by "its boring"... not in a bad way.

  • Thank you, GH. You have done an outstanding job here; it's about time we professional X-word inkers get some RESPECT!

  • GENIUS

  • You know you would make a good documentary director.

  • this is GREAT!

  • ahhh. so Hampfield is a Bumfry! mmm hm.

nice subtle humor in the timing/delivery.

    Link

  • why r u people so impertent to this video let it flow and be economical about the art of croosword puzzles! i'm 12 and i think there magnificent

  • It is fscinating the fact that technological machine puzzles and intelectual progressionists they both trace paralel line on the same crossword paper.

  • HAHAHAHA that sounds exactly like my animation teacher talking about animation

  • I understand it all...but it didn't make me laugh/smirk or anything! After a while the voice got to me and I had to stop watching.

  • One of the best animated shorts I've seen on YouTube. Deadpan humor, funny as hell. I want to be a "penciller" when I grow up!

  • I still think its a cool video, but I've noticed that the framed work by Chad Bumfry and the left crossword inked by Richard Hoobler are the exact same crosswords! xD

Still find this enjoyable and art, but yeah, I just noticed a goof =P

  • It's not really a mistake, I was just too lazy to create more than three or four different puzzles. If you look closely you'll see that the large framed crossword above Garson's drafting table is the same as the Bumfry and Hoobler puzzles.

  • Omg, this is the kind of dry smart humor i love, yes yes yes

  • this is hilarious =))

  • this is brilliant. Its a shame most people on youtube wont understand this and will just say its boring or gay.

  • very interesting so well planned i like your since of tyranty croossword self respect and crossword puzzles are sooooo economical good video

  • Very funny and nice economical animation.

  • NEEERRRRDDD!!!!!!!!

  • I FUCKING LOVE TOM PETTY

  • And I thought my life was strange...

Really loved the video though, funny analogies with the real world (monk inker picture, gutenberg) :)). 5 stars from me.

  • I've watched this several times since I first saw it featured last night. Terrific humor and animation! Some of the other comments on here show just how dumbed down the youth have become. This is way over their heads, and they're better off getting cheap laughs watching some idiot shoot himself in the mouth with a paintball gun or a bunch of white trash chicks brawling over some loser redneck. Yeah, THAT's humor! Gimme a break. Keep up the good work!

  • Thanks, knethen222. I suspect I would've thought a guy shooting himself in the mouth with a paintball gun was hilarious when I was a kid. (It's possible that I would still find it hilarious now.) There's a lot of lowbrow stuff out there, but I don't see it as cause for despair. We middlebrows have to search a bit harder to find the stuff we like, but when we find it, it's all the more rewarding.

    However...pity the highbrows.

  • It's funny how people bash this video without understanding the message its trying to convey

Also, I find it amusing that people actually believe this is a legitimate occupation..geez

  • I understand why its supposed to be funny... The monotony of the guy's voice and the boring topic in general is what makes people not like it

  • Why does this have sooo many views? I got this video URL from a friend who said "Watch this if you can't go to sleep"... Boy was he right, even if this is supposed to be funny, its not entertaining at all -__-

    Goodnight, lol.

  • you must have a very low IQ

  • What a riff, is any of this real,or, was this a midnight conversation with some friends over adult beverages? If that is the case, then, this film is an exciting insight on the absurd. If not,who cares! Well done sir, well done.

  • What's a 12-letter word for brilliant? It's also a dried grape?

  • idk why, but i wanna punch this guy in the face

  • Omg...I think I would off myself...

  • Technology is a good profit area and for lazy people is great. Also is a stock bank of logical resources. There is nothing wrong with that nice market area.

  • Very dry! Just how I like it!

  • This video really touched me, and made me think about what crosswords I do.

  • whats the point with this movie it sux ! -_-!serius its really bad

  • His "original Chad Bumfry" worth two hundred dollars is the same as one of the two he's comparing in so much awe, any one notice that ... The same one as Richard Hubler so he says.

  • yep as technology increases, humans become more and more meaningless in the requirement of all work genres, since machines achieve perfection on a daily basis but lack soul in there craft. oh look there goes a tear running down my cheek.

regardless, I enjoyed the humor and the description of the predicament your company faces. we need more intellectual realism in comedy, and this is a good start.

  • "...with grid paper suddenly they could turn out as many as three." lolz

  • Dude, that is god damn amazing. you are a mother humping genius.

  • Wow, this video has certainly become something significantly notable and interesting on Youtube over the past couple of days. I wanted to comment on your profile but wasn't able to. So I thought I'd just drop a comment saying, Congratulations. =)
