Look at Steve DiGiorgio, Steve Harris, Geezer Butler and Tony Choy. All metal bass player that have noticable bass line that usually don't follw the guitar. Especially Choy and DiGiorgio who are pretty much jazz fusion guys in extreme metal bands.

The real story:

Dave had massive nerve damage in his arm and Megadeth was going down. He was letting everyone out of the band. After going through therapy, Mustaine reformed the band, and Ellefson thought the whole thing was a scam to get all of the rights to Megadeth for his own. They had a huge fight and Ellefson ended up out of the band for good.

well you cant just put a humbucker in a bass. there are 3 kinds of pick ups. p style, j style, humbucker. the p-style or split coil acts like a humbucker but is a split single coil. the j style is like a single coil and humbukers are self explanitory. but it all depends on what style of music. p-style and humbuckers are rock and metal oriented where as j style alone are for jazz and blues. but to answer your question yes it makes a difference.
