to make it thicker, i make the strands very long, fold it in half, make an overhand knot so that there's a loop at the top, then i separate the colors and make the bracelet. i also do just mixed colors with a thick amount of strings, and it looks really cool.

I may be wrong, but I think that you're supposed to do each type of knot twice (forward-forward, backward-backward, etc) to prevent curling.
