  • Great job man! Thumb up for you!

But you use the pick in the middle while Steve Harris plays all song with fingers!

  • 5.8k views and only 110 Likes ? WTF

this is the best bass cover !!! nice job man :D

  • just incredible....

  • Wow, Just amazing, shame to know that hes dead :( R.I.P fellow bassist

  • What a guy

  • amazing..really need a long time training to play steve harris song..

  • amazing..really need a long time training to play steve harris song..

  • heck of a job...........

  • Nice job man, I love playing Maiden songs on my bass as well. Love it when people improvise with the bass line :) Much room for that in most Maiden songs

  • Cream,RUSH,and Maiden have created the most potent bass lines in the history of the electric bass.Also,B.Sabbath,and R.H.Chili Peppers, should be included.

Thank you sir,for demonstrating these songs; from the Bass Masters themselves.

I always like the video of the cat sleeping on your couch while you played.

  • wow you nail this song dudes...awesome bass cover..thanks for share your talent..

  • I used to watch his videos when I played bass daily as a kind of inspiration a year ago, because I´m also a big maiden fan.. I haven´t enough time now to play bass everyday but today I accidently watched a video of him and get to know that he is dead :/ I belive you was a big idol for many musicians here on youtube.. rest in piece.

You know, only the good die young, all the evil seems to live forever..

  • key word: "rendition"

  • Sorry, but he plays Very well and at least he's someone who is creative and makes his own bass lines instead of just doing a cover.

  • wow that was an amazing cover!

  • Wow.... just WOW! WOW I say....

I'd give my right arm for your skills. (And that lovely little 4001) Or... wait... it's difficult to play bass without the right arm. Damn.

  • nice, i would like to play it like it.. what else? oh, you're just great!

  • That's really cool, I saw most of ur Iron Maiden Bass covers!

    Up the irons

i'm going to buy a Cort A4 soon

I hope I'll ever be as good as you :)

  • dude...so...how long hav u been playin...ur to good

  • 25 years.....and thanks.

  • dam...thatz a long time...cant wait till im that good

  • It'll be much sooner than that, I promise you. I have not always practiced a lot....life sometimes gets in the way of playing. About 90% of my skill I learned in the first five years. The rest has just been paying attention to dynamics and writing my own basslines to tunes I love.

  • sweet...thx man

  • I've watched most of your vids, each one better than the previous. Great feel and groove. You fuckin rock dude, keep up the good work

  • LOL....I think you just announced to the world what an ignorant asshat you are.

    *ban*

  • I dont see any covers on your feed.... they must be invisible...

  • Seriously, it sounds good. The song ain't ruined at all, he made his own fills with the picks which are good aswell.

Go back into your cave with your "picks are for fags" etc.

  • I bet you arent even half as good as this guy so fuck off, why does it matter if people use picks or not, I mean this video isnt supposed to be an exact replica of Iron Maien its a cover, or even an interpretation.

Nice job on bass, UP THE IRONS!!!!

  • my previous comment was a reply to stockwell

  • As always an amazing cover! keep it up, your a reason why i play Maiden songs, and to peoples dismay i'm a pick player, how i learnt so its fluid, thanks to you i'm becoming more into other bands not just my favourite band, (Motorhead), so thanks for uploading and keep up the amazing work chief! your a true inspiration!

  • Thanks, man. by the way, Lemmy is God.

  • Hell Yeah, Amen to that!

  • FUCK YEAH RICKENBOCKER!

  • Comment removed

  • hooo! \m/ you are my hero

  • Fantastic!!!And i though that it was an easy song for bass...

  • No, your comment failed. I do not use tabs, so you are way off base there. You are just another troll trying to shit on people because your precious little ego cannot handle the fact that you have 5 subscribers and zero attention. So fuck off, douchebag. This channel is for people who have made peace with their insecurities....obviously you have not.

  • Great stuff; watched most of your videos, they're all good but that was really impressive. Keep up the good work!

  • Love it, you're putting all these videos out for my birthday, aren't you :P

  • uuuum....sure :)

  • Tell you the truth after watching all your maiden videos i think the bass lines sound better with a pick.

  • are you more comfortable with a pick or your fingers?

  • Between a pick and fingerstyle, I must confess I am far more comfortable with a pick. I started out playing with a pick and did so for about 4-5 years before I even tried playing with my fingers.

However, I am as comfortable slapping as I am playing with a pick. It's really a similar motion. Of course people say I have a really unorthodox slap style, so perhaps my slap style is borne of originally being a pick player.

  • By the way, did you see my cover of this? It is audio only, but I think I did good for myself

  • I have not, but I will be sure to give a listen soon.

  • I love what you did to this song! You should really try playing this with your fingers. It takes a lot of dedication, but I i can do it I am sure you can.

  • LOL....no, I cannot. Not with any degree of power and precision. It's a limitation of mine from not being a fingerstyle player for the first five years of playing. My fingers have some ability, but not Steve Harris level of ability.

  • one of my fav's again

    \m/ Rock On! \m/

  • I prefer the prophecy or the clairvoyant to play on bass from the seventh son of a seventh son album, but this song is also great!

    good playing as always ;)

Up The Irons and keep up this great work!

  • youre right! the best song in this album

  • is your bass plugged into your computer and if so how would I do that (need step by step if you don't mind) great playing, and love your technique... esp when you switch from fingers to pick style

  • Bass to effects processor to guitar recorder to the computer. That's the set-up. As far as what equipment I use, you can get that from my channel page.

  • How dare you subject us to your unwashed self... hahahaha. Stellar playing of course!

  • I don't know if you can do this with your bass but on mine the hole that the pick-up is mounted in is a little to big so there's a gap on the top that lets me wedge a pick in. Getting it out is as simple as sliding it out with my thumb.

Also what kind of strings do you use?

  • I used to be able to slide it along the backside of my bridge, but since I refinished it, that space no longer holds a pick.

  • great man

  • Excellent as usual.

  • One Word. Awesome. :)

  • Very nice, any chance of you doing Moonchild some time? That might be my favorite Steve Harris bassline.

  • I'll probably get around to it eventually.

  • great vid man. Sounds like I've got more practicing to do. The switch to the pick was rather bad, but just because of the dropped sustained note. I usually keep my pick in my teeth.

  • Yes, I know. I wrote about it in my blurb.

  • I always thought that most newer iron maiden was gay but this is pretty cool

the bass parts are awesome, plus you play them even better.

  • Wish I could, but youtube yanks them down before they even have a chance to post. I am afraid that the old covers I did will have to do.....plus the ones that were removed that I posted on yourplayalongDOTcom.

  • Great job man.

  • Thanks, massivehead. Been working on anything on your end lately?

  • Posted up a S.O.D. cover last night. First cover in awhile. Been busy.

  • the camera is too close this time but the song's choice it's great.

    up the irons!

  • Yeah, I corrected the blocking issue on the next video. Been a while since I shot a vid with this kind of camera, but the quality is much, much better.

  • Try something from Alice in chains, please.

    good work

  • Awesome playing!

Thats a pretty sweet looking bass you got there too!

  • Priscilla is my girl....much like your acoustic, my bass and I have been inseparable for many, many years.

  • At least you keep her in good shape hahaha,

My acoustic has taken a few knocks in her time! And been drawn on serveral times haha. But I love it just the same.

  • good job

  • Thanks.

  • Wow that was something else man, my favorite perfomance for sure thus far from you. What kiind of picks do you use by the way?

  • Dunlop tortex picks, 0.88mm (the green ones). Been using them for over 20 years.

  • i don't know if you take requests, but a few songs that would be cool to hear you play on bass:

Sea Of Lies - Symphony X

    Carry On - Angra

Dark Eternal Night - Dream Theater

    Only Ash Remains - Necrophagist

    awesome playing BTW

  • I used to take request before they piled up so high that they were impossible to manage.

Necrophagist eh? Dang, that is a LOT of homework.

  • Another great, as always! UP THE IRONS!!!!

  • \m/ Maiden Rules \m/

  • Hey Rob that was brilliant. Haven't listened to that album for quite a while now. Seventh son was also my first maiden album back then. From that point on I had to go back in time. There's so many great songs on this album but I can see why you picked this as your favorite. The bass really shines there and so did you.

    Keep it metal!

  • Go back in time.....funny, because the first album you would have encountered was "Somewhere in Time"

  • Such an awesome performance and an awesome song. Remember listening this as a kid :)

  • This is pure "awesomeness" man! A true LRRG for sure!!!

And yes this is a awesome song, maybe the best on the album along w/ Moonchild in my opinion. Then again the whole album is amazing, my first Maiden album 20 yrs ago!

    Keep up the great work!!

  • I will. And yes, it is a great tune.

  • man NICE BASS

any way what do you more a pick or fingers?

i use my fingers more but some songs are impossible on fingers :P

  • I use my fingers about 30% of the time. My thumb about 30% of the time. and the rest is pick.

  • Wow amazing! You never cease to amaze me with your insane bass skills.

  • You never cease to miss a video! LOL...thanks.

  • haha what can I say? I enjoy your videos!

  • Fantastic as always Zodiac. The unbelievable punchy sound coming from the Rick gives me an orgasm every time I hear it. Thanks for this video.

  • Welcome.....sorry about your keyboard, though. :)

  • I have so much respect for you, now that you covered this Maiden gem, zodiakironfist. It's underrated Maiden gems like these that I love to just turn off all the lights and listen too. Keep up the good work.

  • Thanks. B-side songs are my specialty.

  • This was from the Seventh Son of a Seventh Son album, not a B-Side.

  • It is not one of their featured tunes from that album....which makes it a B-side tune.....an uncelebrated gem. I didn't literally mean it was released as a B-side of a single release.

  • Oh, right. I understand what you mean now. Yeah, it's probably my favorite song from the album.

  • So THAT was what the arm band was for. lol, Awesome as always.

  • Yeah, it stops my arm from getting ripped to shreds from the edge of my bass when I play with a pick. My next video will feature it, as well.

  • Do I spy some pick up-stroke?!

Great video as always, man. You really have me listening to Iron Maiden. I even watched a whole concert the other day!

    Nice pink T shirt :)

  • Yes, there is plenty of upstroking in this tune. too fast to play unidirectionally, and too slow to just blitz it like a death metal tune. Medium speed is a pain to play.

Thanks....new T-shirt, actually. Got it for free from a trade show.

  • hey Zodiac, if you had to choose a bass to buy what would you choose? I have a Ibanez GSR 200 and am looking to get a different guitar. What would you choose?

  • Well, every bass player is different, so it is hard to say what would be best for you and the amp you have. My suggestion is always to try everything.

When I did this exercise last, I found the Schecter Stiletto Elite. I never had heard of the brand before I played it. Sure was sweet with the thin neck and the great tone for slap style.

  • Well Im a beginner so ive just been playing along with Steve Harris. I'll look into the Schecter, I too havent heard of that but ill take a look.

  • Schecter's are great, but also look in the fender section. Whether it be a jazz bass or a precision bass (like Steve Harris).

  • Awesome! I really like the way your tone came through in this video.

  • Sometimes she sounds really growly and great, and other times not so much. The good thing is...I seem to be getting good sound out of her for now, so I will be sure to make a bunch of vids soon while the gettin' is good.

  • ah I love the sound of your rick on this video. I just received a rickenbacker 4003 in mapleglo I named Michelle

  • Nice name. Nice bass. I hope you get a lifetime of enjoyment out of her as I have Priscilla. My bass and I are inseparable. I'd choose my wife over my bass, of course, but nothing else.

  • Do you have any other basses? I have a four string Fender Squire Jbass "Blood Diamond" and a 5 string Peavey that I haven't found a name for yet.

  • Dude, you are seriously the best bass player on Youtube.

Please continue to be a major inspiration for me and many others.

  • Thanks. Best bass player on youtube may be a tad over-generous, but I'll take it nonetheless :).

  • Awesome man, really well done

just one hint: put the pick onto your left hand, like that you can hold the note and grab the pick out with the right hand ;)

  • Yeah.....I sure learned my lesson about that on this tune.

  • Nice video once again! Is this Metal Force 5 or just solo stuff btw? Nice to see you play both pick and finger style.

  • This is just solo stuff. For MF5 I suggested this tune and it got shot down, so I know I am safe playing it by myself.

The other guys are still working on their parts for the next tune.

  • By the way, I shot another vid today. Much faster tune, and I was covered in sweat by the time I did my last take.....Megadeth tune from the first album. I'll release it in a few days or so.

  • Ahhh, I love your video's. You're so talented my friend. Thanks for this, its great.

  • Thanks much. I don;t know if it is talent so much as just working at it by ear for years. Honestly, before I started playing bass I thought I was tone-deaf. Some might even still argue that I am...LOL.

  • Ahhh well, practise makes perfect I guess then. Look foward to the Megadeth video :D

  • Been wayyyy too long since I've made a video as well, but Swine Flu sucks lol, awesome job as usual, love the boomy dynamics of this tune.

  • Swine Flu?!?!?! Whoa dude, please eat your chicken soup and don't about not making a vid. Get better.

You're in the U.K. right? Yeah, I was lucky not to get it when I was there because for some reason, you guys have it way worse than the U.S.

  • I am better thats the thing, its blatent fear mongering! But I'm thankful we dont have any Lou Dobbs or Glenn Beck over here, I'm Swine Flu free.

  • Yeah the flu itself is no so bad if you are a healthy person. But for some reason certain people take a taurn for the worse. I think there might be a genetic factor like fasculating fasciatus had (flesh-eating bacteria).

  • i always love the crap out of your tone. its great.

  • Yeah, today I was quite thick and loud. Wonder how I did that?

  • Damn, it's been way too long since made a video with yourself. How's the old rickenbacker treatin' ya?

  • Just fine, I suppose. Her sound is not perfect....kinda muddy, but still she is a blast to play. So reactive to a strong a strong attack.

Sorry about not making a vid in a while. That business trip to England took a bit of preparation, and when I came back, I had to get work in order again. I am just getting my head above water now.

  • England? Damn, that sounds like fun. Was it all people cracked it up to be? What was the business thing for anyways?

  • It was way more than it was cracked up to be. I had a life-changing experience there....the people were so nice it made me ashamed how we can be here in the states.

The business trip....I had to give an invited talk about my metabolomics research to an international society of metabolomaticians (other scientists who aslo use metabolomics techniques). I learned a lot there, and my talk was well-received (as you can guess I'm a bit of a showman But the pub life was wonderful!

  • Well, what do you expect? We're Americans, not much can be done about it.

Metabolomics? Does this have anything to do with the bug stuff you do? It's definitely a first I've heard of it. Did you go to an english pub, if so, how was it? Any different than the bars we have?

  • Yes, I use metabolomics to establish what biochemical changes occur in insects in response to environmental stresses, to be exact.

And as far as my English pub story goes, have you seen my last video?

  • Ahh, no wonder why it was an english pub, must've been a hell of a "business trip".

  • It was great. I'd finish the conference for the day in the early afternoon, went back to my hotel, ripped off my tie, donned a metal T-shirt, and then had a REAL good time, thanks to the locals.

  • Bug man by day, crazy-ass bassist by night. I'd say that's a pretty damn good living right there. Must be bringin' home the bacon too. I got a question for ya. I've decided to take a major in electric engineering with a minor in telecommunications, do you think that would fit with someone who wants to get into the music thing with the band and whatnot?

  • You could be a live bait salesman or a neurosurgeon and have a second life as a musician. It's all a matter of how your prioritize your life.

  • Or you could be an Albatross salesman from Huddersfield :D

  • Eh, I'm just having a little trouble right now with college and all..
