okay, here is my review of your review... i guess you could say i've got a coupl'a' minor "quirks" with it. first off, you spent the first 2 mins reading wikipedia and lubuntu.net, what was that about... next, it's not "irc" like a word, it's pronounced i-r-c, an acronym standing for internet relay chat... to sum it up, you got off to a rather crappy start, and i think it could have been done in 1/3 of the time.
It looks like they've done well at keeping the default install minimal. The last time I messed with LXDE was Fedora and the impression I got was that there was too much LXDE-centric stuff getting in the way of Openbox. I could be wrong, but LXPanel just gets uglier the more you configure it (at least with a dark theme like BSM). With Openbox alone, you can get a very nice looking layout with xfce4-panel, conky, lxappearance for theming and idesk for resizable icons.
It will run faster..... better? well that depends on the individuals opinion.... and how familiar you are with windows vs linux or how much you are willing to learn / patience
@Linux4UnMe This is more or less an excuse to finally learn linux. I want something lightweight for this old pc for obvious reasons, but I went into this knowing it'd take some getting used to.
review was ok except for the last 1/4 or 1/3, he got wrapped up in some really irrelevant trivial details like how to reorder the icons on the desktop by right clicking...wtf?
Yes... well just like Gnome / Kde there are right click options to re arrange desktop icons... but on lxde it doesn't work when arranging by category.... and yet it works on other Environments with the exact same categories mentioned on lxde... I was pointing out that it doesn't work. I do not know if it works since the date of this video
I'm using Lubuntu right now on an Acer aspire one d257 right now and i'm happy.
All stuff works out of the box.
It came pre installed with windows7 starter, but when i realized i couldn't even change my desktop wallpaper i said f*ck this shit and cleared my HD for Lubuntu.
I guess the jokes on me because i already payed for windows......i don't care, i learned.I also hated the new Ubuntu Unity interface.Lubuntu is perfect for netbooks.
use docky for your icons in this one. wonderful solution. most used icons attached to the dock. It is available via synaptic. I use this OS on a 6 year old Dell the poor thing is flying.
you can install both a ubuntu software center and/or the lubuntu software center, which as far as i can tell installs the same software, but uses less resources
40% slower? I doubt that very much. If you have proof and can link to a benchmark comparing 32 and 64 bit on the same hardware then that claim would be more credible
@omaramo190683 Why are you even running lubuntu on a computer with that much RAM when Ubuntu (because of Unity perhaps?) or Linux Mint would run fine. If you want to use all your RAM use Ubuntu 11.04 64 bit and if you hate unity like me use Linux Mint 11 64 bit. Btw Mint is Ubuntu done right and it's based on Ubuntu so you should not have compatibility issues since they are very similar except Mint still uses Gnome 2 and will keep using it for the next release.
@omaramo190683 Well just so you know lubuntu is not for hardware with that much RAM but is instead meant to be a lightweight operating system that can be installed on very old computers so obviously lubuntu does not have a 64 bit version. However if you want to use whatever you like.
Your videos turn out pretty good. Are you still using ffmpeg to do your screencasts? I saw a video you made a while back on this but for some reason mine come out looking all slow motion. Have you ever had that problem?
@Linux4UnMe Just tried -r 120 and it did not seem to make any difference. Not really sure what it is. Everything is just a little off. I even tried with out the sound. I used "ffmpeg -f x11grab -r 120 -s 1920x1080 -i :0.0 -vcodec huffyuv -sameq test.avi"
hhmmmm. Not sure why... Maybe you will have to try different video codecs to use with ffmpeg. If you google "ffmpeg screencasts" you should find various tutorials and settings to try out. Might have to try a few different methods and play around with it for a day or so ;)
@Linux4UnMe Yeah, I have got a feeling that I am going to be messing with it for a long time ha ha ha. Take care. Oh, and tell your friend to make some more videos I like his very much too.
The audio in this review is strangely low gain, could you please run normalize filter from audacity on your voice section next time? =) (Just suggestion, nothing more :) )
I hope LXDE can continue maturing and some extra functionality, so long as it retains the lightweight..ness. lol.
Nice potential I reckon, it's already a favourite among those who want something fairly no fuss and just let them do work.
I reckon XFCE too will almost become the new Gnome 2, as it sorta has been Gnome-lite for years if you know what I mean, but with 4.8 and its improvements it might be the DE for Gnome refugees at this stage. And its so fast!
@Linux4UnMe Very true, and IIRC it's an old version of XFCE too they use.
Having said that I was rather impressed with Mint's Debian XFCE edition, coupled with the Mint Menu applet (via the Gnome module compatibility, I forget the name of it) it looks almost identical to their normal Gnome edition but bloody quick
To solve the volume control problem with lxde you can use alsa instead of pulse.
Download the alsavol.py and volbar.py scripts. Move them to your bin folder and execute them. Add volbar.py to your startup sessions and it will pop up in your notification area down on your panel. To make shortcuts, press ALT+F2 and type in the command "lxshortcut -o ~/Desktop/my_shorcut.desktop". However I don't know how to add this to your right click menu. I'm not very good at scripting and such.
yeah that could be an option, I could of easily of found a workaround if I felt like it, but I only really care about the out of the box experience when i'm reviewing a distro. I only installed Lubuntu to review it, now it's gone ;)
