  • didnt know kangaroos could use a pc...or is this a kiwi?

  • @Lvl22nerd

    I am a Reptilian

  • okay, here is my review of your review... i guess you could say i've got a coupl'a' minor "quirks" with it. first off, you spent the first 2 mins reading wikipedia and lubuntu.net, what was that about... next, it's not "irc" like a word, it's pronounced i-r-c, an acronym standing for internet relay chat... to sum it up, you got off to a rather crappy start, and i think it could have been done in 1/3 of the time.

  • @cmrodican

I will give you a full refund :)

  • It looks like they've done well at keeping the default install minimal. The last time I messed with LXDE was Fedora and the impression I got was that there was too much LXDE-centric stuff getting in the way of Openbox. I could be wrong, but LXPanel just gets uglier the more you configure it (at least with a dark theme like BSM). With Openbox alone, you can get a very nice looking layout with xfce4-panel, conky, lxappearance for theming and idesk for resizable icons.

    Anyhow, another great video!

  • Got an old PC from circa 2004 that I want to use as a media server. This will run ok on it right? Will it work better/faster than XP?

  • @yagamiraito

It will run faster..... better? well that depends on the individuals opinion.... and how familiar you are with windows vs linux or how much you are willing to learn / patience

  • @Linux4UnMe Well he could just try it and see if it works or not, but why not Bodhi?

2004 computers do not have that much power in them usually

  • @Linux4UnMe This is more or less an excuse to finally learn linux. I want something lightweight for this old pc for obvious reasons, but I went into this knowing it'd take some getting used to.

  • what the bont of this u can download lxde for xubuntu and it will look and fill the same

  • mu muted

  • how to u do microphone sound

  • I was very happy when LXDE as a DE came out, and know i see it,

from a little project to become a strong player comparing to other Desktop Enviroments!

    I L-O-V-E LXDE!

Cheers to the developers for making our life simple and easy!

  • review was ok except for the last 1/4 or 1/3, he got wrapped up in some really irrelevant trivial details like how to reorder the icons on the desktop by right clicking...wtf?

  • @Edsta922

Yes... well just like Gnome / Kde there are right click options to re arrange desktop icons... but on lxde it doesn't work when arranging by category.... and yet it works on other Environments with the exact same categories mentioned on lxde... I was pointing out that it doesn't work. I do not know if it works since the date of this video

  • I'm using Lubuntu right now on an Acer aspire one d257 right now and i'm happy.

All stuff works out of the box.

It came pre installed with windows7 starter, but when i realized i couldn't even change my desktop wallpaper i said f*ck this shit and cleared my HD for Lubuntu.

I guess the jokes on me because i already payed for windows......i don't care, i learned.I also hated the new Ubuntu Unity interface.Lubuntu is perfect for netbooks.

  • hmm fine! looks like my XP Classic ... *testing* =)

  • use docky for your icons in this one. wonderful solution. most used icons attached to the dock. It is available via synaptic. I use this OS on a 6 year old Dell the poor thing is flying.

  • Well it's already better then Unity.

  • When you went into alsa mixer, after hitting F6, hit F4 for Capture. I noticed that it had Playback selected. Give that a shot.

  • you can install both a ubuntu software center and/or the lubuntu software center, which as far as i can tell installs the same software, but uses less resources

  • @zibamanzar

read about the lightweight software centre the other day... looks kinda crap... but ohwell....

  • @zibamanzar when I did this, my wifi went to when using gnome/ubuntu. I think lubuntu overwrites a config file somewhere.

  • Do a review on the 64 bit version of Lubuntu (there is one now) its on omgubuntu

  • @how2hack1on1

unless you use a PAE enabled kernel

  • Does it have access to the software center???

  • @defixioN no, just synaptic

  • You don't really need software center, once you learn synaptic its more easy and better.

  • @Timebubbles

40% slower? I doubt that very much. If you have proof and can link to a benchmark comparing 32 and 64 bit on the same hardware then that claim would be more credible

  • @MrNthDegree

    that is indeed correct

  • i use linux mint 10 lxde on 2GB ram, core 2 duo 1.6ghz and intel graphics 965 x3100 and runs like a ferrari :D

  • you don't see dock :))

  • Address for Quelitu

    wavesofthefuture. net Menu: Quelitu

  • Check out also another lightweight system. It is based on Lubuntu:

    Main page:

Quelitu 2-11.04 Natty Narwhal--A Lightweight Operating S for the Environment

  • They have unofficial 64bit builds of lubuntu

  • @HatedAlways

    yeah heard that yesterday. cool

  • Mint lubuntu (LXDE) is on all my older computers.

  • @jscottupton

yeah I like Mint's version alot more actually

  • someone knows why lubuntu detects only 3gb of ram?? my laptop have 4gb

  • @omaramo190683

because you are running a 42bit version of Linux. You need 64bit.

Otherwise install a PAE enabled Kernel from the repos

  • @Linux4UnMe thanks

  • @Linux4UnMe

    lol i meant "32" bit :)

  • @Linux4UnMe i suppose that, thanks

  • @omaramo190683 Why are you even running lubuntu on a computer with that much RAM when Ubuntu (because of Unity perhaps?) or Linux Mint would run fine. If you want to use all your RAM use Ubuntu 11.04 64 bit and if you hate unity like me use Linux Mint 11 64 bit. Btw Mint is Ubuntu done right and it's based on Ubuntu so you should not have compatibility issues since they are very similar except Mint still uses Gnome 2 and will keep using it for the next release.

  • @vediocamera hi, because i want to try it, i like the lubuntu and lxde philosophy. I use debian on my lap. Cheers!!!

  • @omaramo190683 Well just so you know lubuntu is not for hardware with that much RAM but is instead meant to be a lightweight operating system that can be installed on very old computers so obviously lubuntu does not have a 64 bit version. However if you want to use whatever you like.

  • @vediocamera yep, cheers

  • @omaramo190683 There is actually a 64bit version of Lubuntu!

I read about it in this OMGUbuntu article and it even has the download links: .omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/05/lubuntu-64bit-image-available-for-download/

  • @omaramo190683 32bit operating systems cannot detect 4gb of ram.

  • Your videos turn out pretty good. Are you still using ffmpeg to do your screencasts? I saw a video you made a while back on this but for some reason mine come out looking all slow motion. Have you ever had that problem?

  • @dodo3773

    yep still ffmpeg.

Nope never had any slow motion.... maybe you could try adjusting

the frames per second to a higher setting?

  • @Linux4UnMe Just tried -r 120 and it did not seem to make any difference. Not really sure what it is. Everything is just a little off. I even tried with out the sound. I used "ffmpeg -f x11grab -r 120 -s 1920x1080 -i :0.0 -vcodec huffyuv -sameq test.avi"

  • @dodo3773

hhmmmm. Not sure why... Maybe you will have to try different video codecs to use with ffmpeg. If you google "ffmpeg screencasts" you should find various tutorials and settings to try out. Might have to try a few different methods and play around with it for a day or so ;)

  • @Linux4UnMe Yeah, I have got a feeling that I am going to be messing with it for a long time ha ha ha. Take care. Oh, and tell your friend to make some more videos I like his very much too.

  • @dodo3773

    lol

    yeah will do

  • What the total size of the CD do they save a lot?

  • @TheRanblingjohnny

    say what?

  • The audio in this review is strangely low gain, could you please run normalize filter from audacity on your voice section next time? =) (Just suggestion, nothing more :) )

  • @lin545

    Turn it up :)

hehe It might be a good idea actually.... cheers for the suggestion

  • @Linux4UnMe Sure. I cannot turn it up though - phones.. :/

  • I got 10.10 running on an old laptop with tweaks, runs fast but still not for new Linux users from Windows.

  • @TheLinuxsensei

lol cool. It aint quite as functional as classic gnome... but not too far off

  • Funny to see how they switched from xarchiver to file-roller. I just did the opposite today because file-roller requires gnome-desktop now.

  • @BeeFive13

ah ok. I just use tar in the cli ;)

  • I hope LXDE can continue maturing and some extra functionality, so long as it retains the lightweight..ness. lol.

Nice potential I reckon, it's already a favourite among those who want something fairly no fuss and just let them do work.

I reckon XFCE too will almost become the new Gnome 2, as it sorta has been Gnome-lite for years if you know what I mean, but with 4.8 and its improvements it might be the DE for Gnome refugees at this stage. And its so fast!

  • @ElderSnake90

yeah it's still young yet. As for Xfce, I really wish they would make it look more modern.

Then it might get more attention. I mean, look at what DreamLinux done with XFCE. it is simply Amazing

and you wouldn't think it was Xfce

  • @Linux4UnMe Very true, and IIRC it's an old version of XFCE too they use.

Having said that I was rather impressed with Mint's Debian XFCE edition, coupled with the Mint Menu applet (via the Gnome module compatibility, I forget the name of it) it looks almost identical to their normal Gnome edition but bloody quick

  • oh, and Audacious as standart player? That's friggin awesome! I love that player and have been wondering why it's been getting so little attention

  • So you'll be doing Xubuntu next? ^^

I heard that many people that were recently displeased with gnome switched to XFCE because it's gtk too and most similar to gnome

  • @Nyocurio

dunno if I will or not.... might do.

lol yeah Xfce, Kde and LinuxMint will gain alot of users now that gnome is headed in this direction

  • To solve the volume control problem with lxde you can use alsa instead of pulse.

Download the alsavol.py and volbar.py scripts. Move them to your bin folder and execute them. Add volbar.py to your startup sessions and it will pop up in your notification area down on your panel. To make shortcuts, press ALT+F2 and type in the command "lxshortcut -o ~/Desktop/my_shorcut.desktop". However I don't know how to add this to your right click menu. I'm not very good at scripting and such.

  • @blackoutworm

yeah that could be an option, I could of easily of found a workaround if I felt like it, but I only really care about the out of the box experience when i'm reviewing a distro. I only installed Lubuntu to review it, now it's gone ;)

  • what's that intro song you use?

Sounds like a pretty cool rap beat I would love to freestyle above.

  • @blackoutworm

yeah it is one of many rap beats I have... I could upload it somewhere if you wanna download it. Just Pm Me

  • first like... yepp

  • @fodorgyuri666

    lol cheers

  • waa waa waaaauuuu

  • @thepunjabisher1

    I like yoghurt

    LoL
