  • i love the song.,.

  • What an over the top song.

  • I've never been to Maine either.

  • @matleyz Seen enough of this war?

  • What this song is saying :I've lived the good life but all I really wanted was to be sattled with kids, watching daytime tv and being a slave to a 9-5 husband. The whole tone of it ALL makes me want to stick forks in my eyeballs

  • Good God..wait, I shouldn't blame the Almighty for this drek..so..Crap, this is absolute bullshit. Basically the song is saying, "I pretty much lived a life banging guys in high places, and now I wish I hadn't. I wish I had married Joe the plumber and squeezed out his spawn. Because those are the only two options a woman has. Whore, or mother. Yeah...because no woman in the history of time has ever say...had a career, or ambition, or anything like that. What a load of bullshit.

  • @hollycbaby Hey bro sis, I think this song is written more for the "discontented mother" in the opening. It's speaking to the woman who did decide to chain herself down to a family life and maybe laments doing so at certain times. And the singer is just talking about a life full of recklessness and freedom, I don't think there's a heavy emphasis on whoredom just unrestricted sex.

  • i love this song!

  • HM.LOVE IT SO MUCH XOXOXOXOXOXOXO.

  • hey gay

  • affected peeps keeps following here...sad

  • Indeed, avdreader1. The "subtle whoring" line is one of the worst ever penned in a hit song. It's right up there with the chair not being able to hear Neil Diamond in "I Am, I Said" and the one in "Seasons in the Sun" where the dying guy bemoans the fact that the stars he and his girl could reach were only starfish on the beach!

  • from the lyrics, A LOT of people, including a preacher and a king have been to charlene...I'm pretty sure charlene has been to charlene...

  • 唱歌代替了持咒的体会~

  • Subtle whoring???

  • Hey Lady! Shoot the woman singing this...PLEASE! It's even worse than I remember. Hearing it on the way to school wishing the bus would blow up.

  • Ha love this song played it every day while out in Afganistan.

  • Oh i'm crying bcoz this song

  • Thank You Dear Art Hueng~~ <3

  • you don't have to be a high class international whore or indeed a discontented mother to have never been to me! I am neither and have seen a lot of the world but still have never been there!! X

  • I love this song, makes me cry...I didnt even know the title...but now I finally found you

  • LOVE this song!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU MrRenaissance!! OH!! And I just noticed, your upload date (November 11, 2006) was EXACTLY 5 YEARS ago today!! What a coincidence!! TODAY is 11/11/11!! You have a good one!!

  • Takes me back to 1982 when i girl i copped off with was trying to learn the lyrics, she kept playing it until she knew the words, good days!

  • Hahaha I woke up with this song in my head hahahahaa...I have no idea why. Ive only heard it once or twice.

  • Made love in the sand to a preacher man,

Though he didn't make me come.

  • I've been to Paradise, but I've never been to Leeds

  • someone bring me to monte carlo!!!to some kind of bilat live in monte carlo,, thts very nice@@@

  • I moved like Harlow in Monte Carlo

    And showed 'em my bilat....

  • Coul'd never get this dumb song out of my head. I just imagine some weird bag lady grabbing me and ranting this nonsense at me. You could drown in the schmalz. I've seen some things a woman 'aint s'posed to see, didn't turn my brain into mush. Truly awful.

  • I've been to paradise but it never been to me ;'(

  • this is the one song i could listen to for a life time and never get fed up of, its beautiful. reminds me of memories when there was no worries and my beautiful mother was dancing with me in the kitchen.

  • Hey, you know what paradise is?

    It's a lie

A fantasy we created about people and places

As we like them to be

But you know what truth is?

It's that little baby you're holding

And it's that man you fought with this morning

The same one you are gonna make love to tonight

    That's truth

    That's love <3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

  • beautiful song thnx poster

  • Randy Crawford does this song so much better this one sucks

  • This lady sure does get around.

  • Great now I want to do what she did and I'm a guy.

  • i love this song,,facts lyrics

  • bro dis bitch full shreds

  • dpat sa mga babaeng walng kasiyahn ng totoo eh ipinapako sa krus,,,,nang patiwarik,,,,sayng ang kinabukasan ng mga bata na sinasayng lng ng mga ganyang walng kuwentangina,,,,

  • i" been to paradise but never been to me

  • Took the hand of a preacher man and we Made love in the sun

    did she fuck the vicar

  • dd

  • Priscella the queen of the desert

  • Her voice gives me the chills....

  • I find the lyrics of this song quite deceiving, as they show a world which simply does not exist.

And I wonder how many actual divorces it created , out of idiot housewives who thought they actually had a go at all this bullshit.

Worse, drug head kids who did not receive a proper education since the wife was daydreaming about fucking kings in greek shores and all.

Nonetheless, a very pretty melody indeed.

  • THIS SONG TO ME HAS ALWAYS MEANT THAT WHERE EVER I GO, I TAKE ME WITH ME AND I NEVER TAKE TIME TO REALLY GET TO KNOW THIS PERSON THAT IS IN ME. AND WHEN I FINALLY TOOK TIME AND WAS PATIENT WITH HER , I TRULLY LOVED HER AFTER ALOT OF FORGIVNESS AND I REALIZED THAT SHE WAS THE PERSON I HAD ALWAYS RAN FROM AND TRIED TO HIDE FROM. NOW WE ARE "ONE" AND I FEEL HAPPINESS.

  • This song is the one that my mother's favorite

  • Comment removed

  • It's about not knowing the real person inside, as we all tend to be someone we are not just to please other people we live in a fantasty world most of the time when the real paradise is within ourselves all we have to do is look for it once u find it ...... IT REALLY is BEAUTIFUL

  • If you want to know the details behind this song, and what Charlene thinks about it, she now has an official site, CharleneSongs (d-t c-m - can't post URLs here). She has new songs on the site and her books too.

  • My sister had this played at her funeral 2 years ago, she wanted it purley for the line "sublte whoring" in a religous place. RIP sis

  • @scottomt I'm truly sorry, RIP

  • @scottomt I love your sister :-)

  • @scottomt very nice story, thanks for sharing, blees her.

  • @scottomt sorry about your sis, she had a great sense of humor

  • @scottomt She must have been a real Cracker Jack! God bless her!

  • Maybe it is just a pretty girl who wants the freedom to act like a man. I have a soft spot for a sexy broad who likes to have a jolly good shag.

  • Is it about a high price postitute? Maybe...But, this son was written in the 70's and perhaps only those women from the 70's can relate to it. Women were screaming for equality in high-paying positions, choosing careers over marriages, yes, there was a lot of promiscuity because it came with the territory of not wanting to be 'tied down like mommy was' attitude. It is a song that I bet many women who are now in their 60's can relate to and possibly apply to their own experience.

  • Good tune, stupid concept. I've had it all, travels, baby, men - no complaints. If you got stuck, too bad you didn' have the guts to fix it.

  • @ThePriscillification me to love this tune

  • Charlene's been to Monte Carlo indeed.

  • those who dont like this song because they are just not there. and pls dont criticize on things you dont know or hvt experiened.

  • Comment removed

  • All the song means is that she made life choices to be free and travel the world seeking happiness because she thought she needed that to be happy, and then realized when looking at her married friends with children that maybe she made some wrong choices for herself because she never found happiness..."there is no way to happiness, happiness IS the way." Just talk to anyone who has been a celebrity and they will tell you - they are seeking something that when they get there, doesn't exist.

  • @dogrescuergirl you moron its about a prostitute hahahaha are you a kid?

  • i love this song, but it always makes me think of drag queens hehe..

  • @thisisbonkers me but love it and i think drag queen love to do this tune

  • is this about high class international prostitute giving advice to a housewife?

  • @xfraudbuster Very funny, best comment i've seen on this song.

  • @xfraudbuster if it's the only thing you see in this song, I pity you

  • @xfraudbuster hahahaahahahahaha! GOLD!

  • ambot ninyo basta ako ganahan ko aning kantaha..

  • what a gay song and so true for my life i have been all over the world on my looks but never been to meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • i used to sing along to this song on the radio in the car

  • SHUT UP! i totally know Charlene! omigosh i knew she wrote songs but i didnt know she was like FAMOUS! hha people shes an awesome person in real life my famz rly good friends with her and she loves her fans, you guys should read her auto-biography or however you say that (:

  • walay klaro nga song... don't really appreciate this song much.

  • i was a kid when i first heard this song. didn't know it's lyrics was about the trials and tribulations of women in hardship. brings me back to my youth

  • is this song about the life of "prostitutes"?

  • it really is a pretty song.......and 2:33 to 2:41 is the very reason it's not popular today.....sing it louder Char', sing it louder!!!!!

  • One of the most beautiful songs in my opinion.

  • @shitAintRight OF course...what would really suck would be if Charlene was undressed by a king...and then the king put on HER clothes.

  • give me subtle whoring to mopping floors any time lol!

  • it is so sad........

  • it is so touching

  • I've been to ME. It's about 45 minutes southwest of Bakersfield California...

Charlene, you haven't missed much. It's cold in the winter, hot in the summer. Everything is overpriced, the place is overrun by gang members and there's no place to eat.

    So quit whining B**ch!

  • i love this somng cause she trying to tell us nt to make the same mistakes as she did

  • Does this song suck 'nuff for yall?

  • @TheMessyjean ...when there isn't a water shortage...

  • the grass is always greener.....

  • Really girl? I would trade everything to experience what you regretted

  • definantly the gayest song ever

  • @TheMajorBoner Well, it was once sung by "Jack" on WILL AND GRACE.

  • I spent my life exploring

    The subtle whoring

That costs too much to be free

    ......

Don't knock it til you've tried it. ;)

  • "I've been to paradise, but I've never been to Leeds"

  • I know this mean, I've been to top of my world at 40 or some years old, but I feel I never been to myself yet... I've got some happiness in exchange for gave some good times up, break some vows up...

  • @hanasakura88

    OH! how true, how true

  • I think that Charlene is trying to express many feelings that she has about her life. She seems to have regrets about her life and wishes that her life had turned out differently for her. She has wished for a fantasy life of having wonderful things. It sounds like she regrets that her relationship didn't work out and she never had the baby that she always wanted. I really believe she is singing about her disappointment that she never found the happiness that she always wanted for herself.

  • You should go to ME in the winter as you'll bump into fewer tourists and will have the beach to yourself. $99 round trip on Southwest.

  • "...took the hand of a preacher man and we made love in the sun?" ...

Who said this song's no good? Who would have thought of stringing that line together?

On a BuckSugar scale of 1 to 10, I'll give that line a 9 for ballsy/audacity. Heh, Heh.

  • THIS IS HORRIBLE! 1970's pretentious schlock at its worst!!! I had almost forgotten about it until Rebecca Black's "Friday" got people talking about what is the "worst song ever" and this one was a popular choice for that title. And, yeah, I looked it up on youtube just to hate on it!

  • @mkeogh76 ...It's right up there, I agree. The arrangement reminds me of a mattell child's toy commercial, nursery room aero toy soundtrack or something equally as bathetic. Her singing is so faint it makes Olivia Newton John sound soulful. But as bad as all of this is, the worst part by far is that mid-break bit where she talks about fucking her husband with whom she fought with earlier in the day. I burst out laughing every time, it never fails.

  • @911insidejo8 gold.

  • extraordinary to think charlene went on to become a ruthless somalian pirate..who would have thought it. she sang this song for the other pirates on boring days - 'Ive robbed in zambia and northern gambia. I stole every boat in the sea. ive robbed in paradise but ive never been to greece'.

  • =)

  • i first heard this on singstar for the ps2 i used to sing my heart out to it :D

  • I heard this song from the radio and think It's very tuneful.

but when I realize the lyrics I can not like it as much as I want.

I am so young but I think woman(and also a guy :) ) can find her own paradize that not only happy family.

  • My dad used to play this song a lot and I thought it was kind of weird, but now I really like it and I'm barely 18. I think it's lovely. Her voice is so sweet. :]

  • What is all this worth if you`ve never been to YOU.....<3?

  • I hate this song with all my being. It's probably the only song that actually makes me feel nauseous. I've always detested violence against women, but listening to this shit just makes me want to punch this bitch.

  • @reichman73 here's some advice for you...DON'T LISTEN TO IT!!!!!

  • @reichman73 haaa made my day

  • @reichman73 So, clearly, everything you are "against" is actually lurking beneath your pathetic surface. If you stopped for a second and LISTENED...she's sending a message of those behind her that are going to do the same shit...and probably with a pathetic fucker like you. You missed the whole point of the song you miserable cromangon dipstick.

  • Any theories as to what she saw that "a woman ain't 'sposed to see"? I was thinking it was guys braiding their armpit hair...but it could be something else.

  • @KennBurch I was thinking things along the lines of something violent....

  • i love this song...

somehow... this is now the reality.

  • It's just great music. Finito!

  • i love and hate this song coz it remind me of my younger years...and now as i become older.. im staring working hard to be a good wife and mother..

  • i love and hate this song.. it reminds me of my younger years...but now im working to be a good mother and wife..

  • love this song!

  • love this song!

  • i heard this the day before my first day of highschool

    memories man

  • i think i spoiled the replay button:D

  • It's no wonder this song hit the top of the charts around the world but bombed here in the USA(it only reached #3 here on the charts). I prefer Mary McGregor's version!

  • i kinda love this song cause it talks about reality,

  • Much older than most posters. Listen to the words. Raise your children with a real father

  • My wife hates this song.

  • nice.!

  • I was once asked for the definition of a cynic. I said it's a person who hates this song and what it stands for.

  • allways be your self

  • i love this song. i love what its about. how realising that, instead of living off golden ideals of paradise and freedom, all she wanted was the humbling reality of family and truth. how love is at its best when its shared between people. how sometimes, your fantasies of an impossibly unattached and free life, should stay fantasies. ill say it again; i love this song.

  • @grizzlychris1 I always figured that ACTUAL housewives, hearing this song, would turn on Charlene and say "listen...at least you HAD the Greek Isles and actually WERE undressed by kings. For me, it's just been that cruddy public beach once a month and Ed Bob falling asleep as soon as he's finished. And if you really feel THAT bad about having all that fun, Charlene, you could change the twins and mop the freakin' floor for me while your here, BITCH!"

  • GREAT point! but for me this crap came on the radio when dad driving to the hospital when i was born.

  • I think she's saying all the rich things she did doesn't equal to being in a family. obviously an abusive relationship isn't any better but if you have a loving family with kids(whether father is there or not) better than whoring out your body and not having any thing. beauty only last so long. and you feel like shit for selling out.

  • @KennBurch that's just rude.

  • @sutherknight Get over yourself. It's a comment about a silly pop song from thirty years ago. Charlene herself is probably SICK of the damn thing by now.

  • @KennBurch that's just rude.

  • @KennBurch roflmao!!!

  • @KennBurch this is the BEST comment i've heard in a looooooooooooong time! lol!

  • @KennBurch We Irish have a saying, be careful what you wish for cause you just might get it.

  • You clearly have no clue to what this song means!! I have been a "housewife" and a professional women at the same time. Sorry that ur good time is at a cruddy beach...that is real life ...we don't get to go Greek Isles!! Listen to song and the meaning.."Hey you know what paradise is, it's a lie a fantasy we create about people and places as we'd like them to be..but you know what truth is ..it's that little baby your holding and that man you fought with this morning be grateful for what u have

  • @ChaosGirl888 Obviously, most people never get to go to Greek Isles...or get undressed by any member of a royal family...and that, basically is my point(btw, the scenario in my post was a joke, and not MY experience).

Charlene is singing this from a vantage point of a privileged person envying a non-privileged person her LACK of privilege. She ends up sounding like an aristocrat saying to a pauper "oh, I SO envy how simple your little life is". Actual working moms would tell her to shove it.

  • And yes, people shouldn't want what they're never going to have, perhaps, but at the same time people who have what most people will never have shouldn't talk to those who have nothing the way this song does.

    Nothing personal.

  • @KennBurch dwrcl....haha...woooiiii...damn man.....dis av me cracking up!!!!

  • @KennBurch That's hilarious, grizzly. very funny. Just did this song at Karaoke in Local pub, near Manchester, and I didn't get stabbed. I'm pretty sure I'm not gay but this is one song I would love to cover but my band wont let me.

  • @KennBurch The grass is always greener on the side, eh?! :))

  • i just love ds song..,..

  • I suppose in a way it could be a nice wedding song, as one who has finally realized that she needed to be herself for once? maybe from then on she could say that she had been to herself?

  • my mum is no longer with us, but she is when we listen to this song.... so many memories of drunken nights finding out who we both were!! Love you and miss you mum xxx

  • my mum is no longer with us, but she is when we listen to this song.... so many memories of drunken nights finding out who we both were!! Love you and miss you mum xxx

  • i love this song

  • แต่คุณ!!!! แต่รัก!!!! กุก้อมะช่ายถังขยะของคายเค้าเหมือนกัล ^^"

  • Classic and Beautiful voice......!

    thanks much for adding.

  • This is my BF's song. He loves this song to bits and he said this is his song when he was younger and this song made him stronger and be a better man. He used to cry to this song everytime he heard this song

If he is down and upset he just turn this song on and just cry.

  • Love this..Song it makes me feel like...i no its aright to be alone\ :}

  • My mom used to play this song: My how my childhood memories make me feel like a child again...

  • @trevylove Ditto.
