Thre most underrated song from one of the most underrated guitarists of all time. When I hear his riffs I am reminded that no matter how much I practice I caant even begin to approach Knofler's true genius.
seminal early-80s video. when skateaway came on, everyone and everything just stopped. we had not seen much like it at that time. rainddogs111: it's "then she let a big truck graze her hip."
Obit: Jayzik Azikiwe (the "Skateaway girl") May 1958- 31 January 2008
Jayzik Azikiwe, the rollerskating, dreadlocked girl who made Dire Straits' "Skateaway" so memorable, died of cancer last year at age 49.
However weird or retro the video is, it made her immortal after a fashion and from what I understand, probably remembered the way she would have liked.
I actually heard this song being played on our Classics radio station in Houston, TX last week-really brought back some memories. I remember wanting to skate after seeing this video and I learned how to-by frequenting the roller rink every weekend...Good Ol days indeed.
Mark Knopfler still tours solo. He did a lot of Dire Straits songs at the concert I was at, including Telegraph Road, Sultans of Swing, Romeo and Juliet......Still sounds great!
Thankyou Thankyou she sobbed. I was afraid I might not ever get to see this again. Brilliant, brilliant production ... dragon4166: Too faint for me, too, I just cranked up my own speakers. Can't you? Great resoluttion. God, what memories this dredges up!!
ir0nli0nzi0n you don't even know what music is. You keep on listening to the Back Street Boys and NSYNC and kissing your Britney Spears poster. Nobody wants your opinion!
Jayzik had one of the sweetest smiles on earth. I could not resist it from the very first time I saw this video clip.
But she also hypnotizes me in this video with two of the most beautiful legs I've ever seen and one of the most sensual dancing performances to the date.
It's a perfect match to the also superb musical performance from dIRE sTRAITS.
I used to party & makeout to this song, with my first love, when I was 15. I am now 44. We would go drinking & cruising with another couple and had so much fun! Billy drove and we other 3 would cocktail. Certainly was different times back then. I still love this tune...
Sounds remarkably like my younger days (first love, making out, cruisin' and boozin' etc). I'm 45 now. Lots of memories with this song--- thanks for sharing yours...
This actually is the first music video I ever saw, and it pre-dated MTV. The whole Making Movies triology, (inc. Romeo and Juliet, and another video was featured on Night Flight which was on USA Network in about 1980.
it's funny to think the chorus of this song is about actually visualizing and creating your own story out of a song, while the video is robbing us of the ability to create our own. Anyhow, it's the only time I've ever enjoyed being robbed.
And the funny thing about that is that this song is a favorite of mine, and I had never seen the video before. It's nothing like the one that plays in my mind when I just listen to the song.
My favorite D.S. song by far, and one of the best, purest music videos ever imho. I've been tempted to learn how to play the drums just to be able to do this song!
makin movies... on location, meaning that we watch her as if we are watching a movie... you understand? She's making movies on location, on this location where you are watching her...
DUDE!!!!!!!!!!! he wrote that song while watchin a blue collar worker rant on about rockstars and how they get "Money for Nothing and chics for free" the worker guy mentioned "little faggots" and stuff.
I agree. I've never heard this song on the radio. They must know that Dire Straits put out more songs than Money for Nothing and Walk of LIfe, right?? It's annoying they just skim the surface! :(
I heard that the girl in this video, Jay Curley("Jayzik") passed away in Janurary 2008. In the video she's using one of the first Sony Walkmans released on the market(1980).
This song is about my mother, Lisa Arlo. She used to run scripts for Kojak in NYC on rollerskates, and one day she got waxed by a drunk taxi driver and effed her knee up. She introduced McGinnis to Knopfler who told Knopfler the story. True story.
Yeah I've got some proof, nothing easily demonstrable over the internet though, you'll have to take my word for it. Real stupid thing to lie about if I am eh?
It bears repeating - Pick Withers laid down one of the finest drum tracks ever here. Right up there with anything Krupa or Louis Bellson ever did. Love the whole tune AND vid.
I love it too. You are right - hardly EVER hear it on the classic rock stations. I remember not hearing it until around 1995. Somehow I had missed it when it came out around 1980. My mind was blown from here to Pluto when I heard it. I now have it on my Ipod and of course go here. A FABULOUS song and great video.
This guitar is clean as fuk. Song was a little long for much airtime though. Should have been a mega-hit. It is to me though.
