The powdery results on Vallejo is because you added too much water and the paint has broken down. Try adding Liquitex Matte Medium instead of water and see if your results improve.
@EclipsePainting Interesting. I think that problem with the GW wash is magnified by the satin finish (smoother and easier to 'slide' on) and the large bend. Probably not a problem under most applications. Saying that, after trying them all, I think if you want the best look and one of the best values, Army Painter is the way to go. While you need the matte clear coat to finish the look, the finish is rock hard on your minis and going to protect them well. Glad you found the video helpful.
@Terranscapes thanks! by the way, about washes, if you're looking for something close to Army Painter Quick-shade Strong Tone, instead of Minwax Poly-shade Bombay Mahoghony, the Antique Walnut is WAY closer to brown. Based on models I've seen, it's right in-between the Strong Tone and Soft Tone in terms of how dark it is.
@Ydouneed2nomyname I've heard that Walnut is the best choice. When I grabbed the can I just looked at the label color and mahogany looked good at that point. ;)
Great vid on the shading, but I got a little confused on the cost comparison? Doesn't it come out to the cost per ML? Isn't that GW = .31, WW = .20, AP = .12 and VW = .05...but then I am old and doing the calcs on my watch :D...I'm thinking I am going to give the vallejo a go...good price and even better if you are stretching it by thinning it...thanks again...Jim.
@Jedijim252 We're both right. ;) Your doing cost/ml and I'm doing ml/$ - which still ranks them the same. And kudos to you for having a calc on your watch! The value on vallejo is incredible, but I think on fancy miniatures like say High Elves, the dirty look might not always be right. Its an esthetic choice in the end.
If you watch WG Consortium's Storm Raven down video. He uses that Vallejo Wash and uses a Q-Tip to the model to take of excess wash after it has dried I believe.
Love the video and I love what you did here but IMO you forgot one of the best washes on the market...and that is the Washes from Secret Weapon. IMO they are the best out there...check them out and tell us what you think.
@Natakue Oh, now that you mention it I think I have heard of that one before. I will see about getting some in the future and provide an update. Thanks for the info. :)
Nice review. For addition vallejo have more washes, black and sepia are only ones available in big pots, in normal 17 ml bottles you also have: pale gray, umber, flesh tone, green, red and blue. And that's true they are heavily pigmented, but if you diluted them as you said you even have twice as much:P
@HQBunker Didn't know that about the other colors. Good info. Perhaps my next review will be a color comparison, say blues for instance. Will look into them.
i personally go for GW mudd and vallejo black for my washes. I LOOOOOOVE the effect that the vallejo black produces. It gives a kind of chalky muted black ( i think that works very well for cloth and metal). I HATE the way gw black goes on.... Vallejo goes on smoother. Personally i havent tried the army painter dark tone, i have used the stronge tone and i dont like it, and i dont like to do another step (matt varnish) to finish a model.
@Yes, the second step required for eliminating gloss effects is something to be considered. Not only another step, but another product to purchase as well. Now that I think about it, that would move the army painter up on the cost list as you really need their anti-shine to finish the model.
great review.Thanks for the info!

GW's washes pull paint/the wash back when it dries.. I saw someone using some sort of stuff to stop it from pulling and keeping that coverage.
All in all... Army Painter the way to go?

when i test paint, inks, sprays, or when I practice painting, I use a knife to cut the sprues and create whols with it to simulate small details.
