An instant way of reducing your alert level is going directly back to a home base.
Certain EDF weapons can only be unlocked when you pick them up off a dead EDF soldier. You automatically picked up the shotgun off a corpse because you had a free weapon slot. For future weapons you see on the EDF, simply swap one of your weapons with the weapon on the ground to unlock it for use in any storage closet. Then swap back your previous weapon if you do not want to use that EDF weapon right away.
