In my opinion whether or not animals feels emotions is not debatable. They are emotional, BUT being wild animals they have to push past hard emotions like grief in order to survive. Though there have been cases of wild animals allowing themselves to die over grief, and some animals have even took revenge over their dead young. Elephants revisit graveyards to mourn the dead. So this whale feels, but we don't how strongly it feels. He could think he's supposed to be alone. Either way it's sad.

Sadly, it's possible that the whale is as lonely as we're making it out to be. Studies show that dogs can feel and lament the absence of their owner should their owner pass or somehow disappear or leave. Who's to say whales aren't capable of at least a fraction of that? This whale must have had a family. A mother and father to give it life, at least. Did they abandon it because they couldn't hear it? Was its pod somehow wiped out?

I would think he was not depressed because, all things considered, Others of the same species typically annoy each other... So he wouldn't have to worry about that... Just him and his Krill in the Big Ocean blue. However, if me not thinking the whale is depressed takes away the exciting books.... Then the Whale is veryy veryy depressed. :P
