Still my favorite Zevon song. I saw him perform live twice, in SF in 1986 and later in Oakland in 1996. I loved the way he would "update" the last lyric to modern events. I like think if he were still with us, it would got something like this:
"The eternal Thompson gunner,
Still wandering thought the night,
It's 46 years later, but he still keeps up the fight,
In Libya, in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Abbotabad...
I wonder how Warren came up with the ideas for these incredible story telling songs? Incredible stuff I mean pure musical genius... Warren you left us too soon. Here's to all the songs we'll never hear. Cheers.
@TheHuskerton This song in particular was co-written by a close friend of Zevon's who was formerly a mercenary. I'm sure there's more information on that somewhere, but I heard this in some interview awhile ago.
Just found this - great! I was at this concert, I must have seen him 5 times at first ave when I lived there - all concerts were different, some just him, some with bands - always kept it new.
@remeclerk shut up, you are embarrasing yourself. If you are in the 'army' its probably a cook or mechanic, not infantry armour artillery etc the 'soldiers' fighting. Man your comments are silly stop. I love how people comment on videos that have nothing to do with the video. Anyways WZ is awesome anyone with ears can figure that out, and his music has got me through a loss right now. HIs tunes are so soulfull and comforting.
@drakharu I was a radio op,British Army, back in the 80s and the comments (now removed) were meant in jest...BTW I love this song, so apologies for any misunderstanding

It's called music.
Sounds weird to you because you're used to the Corporate plastic crap that goes for music these days.
