Not all men lived worthy to obtain celestial marriage, and the ones who did were often appointed wives, rather than being able to pick and choose, and if they were not called to practice polygamy, they were not allowed.

Um, tinycollegegirl, I don't mean to be rude, but the only reason polygamy started was because there were so many widows and homeless children. Men were asked to marry other women so they could provide for them. Men who wanted another wife were refused.
Polygamy wasn't started because LDS are sick-minded and immoral, they were doing what they knew to be right: caring for the welfare of others.

Then look at just who the wives of Smith & Young were, especially Smith's - most by far were young, unmarried women and girls and women who were already married to living husbands - 11, in fact. Check the Utah Census in 1850 - many more men than women. Cold, hard facts trump propaganda. Do your research.

Read Todd Compton's book "In Sacred Loneliness" - very well researched and documented. Compton has not be excommunicated for it because it's indefensible. You'll find out more than you bargained for about polygamy as it was practiced by the early members, not just Smith.

really sorry, i was thinking of the date the church was founded and not the date that polygamy was put out of practice. =) but still, 100+ years. and not a single member of the church of jesus christ of latter-day saints practices polygamy unless they are looking to get excommunicated. polygamy is not tolerated in the church anymore, at ALL. FLDS (fundamental latter-day saints) are NOT the same as LDS. we are not associated with them and don't support them in any way.

Also, members of the church were driven from their homes in the dead of winter for no reason other than their growing population began having political sway. During the Extermination Order in MO mobs killed many of the fathers of families and the tough trip across the plains killed many more. Life was hard in those times even without having to cross the plains after being driven out of Nauvoo too. Women could not earn on a living let alone barely survive on their own. What else were they to do?

Also, I forgot to add that women were not allowed to own property. so once their husband died, they would be homeless as the gov't would confiscate the land. Most were also not allowed to hold jobs, so what were they supposed to do? in order to stop this, and since there were more female than male mormons, polygamy was initiated.
