That was actually quite satisfying to hear from such a young man. My advice would be to explore the boundaries of the bass' capabilities, though, rather than trying so hard to copy what's already been done. You seem to have a talent for it, so why not go for it? Good luck!
This song is a masterpiece. Jaco cast a magical spell when he recorded it. I fell in love with it immediately upon hearing it and of course wanted to figure it out myself. I feel such joy & peace when I play it even though I can only navigate portions of it. Our young friend is not yet a master, but I applaud his efforts. With enough time & effort, he may develop some magic of his own. Follow your bliss, amigo.
you know folks...checkin out dudes like him makes me wanna stop bass playing straight up !

your everything i shouldve been! guns n roses poster! beautiful bass playing some jaco pastorius! :) really good! keep it up the next gen needs people like you!!!
You are incredible and your natural talent and thirst for excellence are here for all to see. You seem the age that would enjoy Star Wars The Clone Wars. I have included a little comedy video merging 2 of my favorites. Jaco & Star Wars. I hope it brings you a bit of smile and reminds you to always keep some fun. Peace:-)
Great job!! I'm proud of you. Glad to see that some kids are still in tune with greatness.... not Justin Beiber or bs things big companies push on them to accept! Wish I knew who you were though.
well lets see... if willwh1993 means you were born in 1993, that means you're my age.....and that means when you were around 13 you could pull off that last harmonic-- (9)13... (bridging at the 9th fret while striking the harmonics at the 13th fret).....and thats phenomenal. what a reach.
Much respect to you for this. Good job, I liked the fact that you seemed to be "feeling" what your playing as opposed just playing it. Keep going and my the "Bass Gods" continue to smile on you.
Young man you are awesome!! What a demanding challenge you set for yourself (learning to play "Tracy"). I have been a Jaco fanatic since 1976 and I love your playing very much. You probably already know Alphonso Johnson, but I wanted to mention his name on the off chance you have not heard it. He is another tremendous bass player you will want to listen to. My dad was a world renowned musician and he always said to listen to as much music as you can. That was his secret. You are special
I think his bass is fine...kids now a days like to listen guitarists whether it be blues, jazz, acoustic or anything for that matter...They discover that music is awesome and takes us away from regular everyday lives into a whole new world....The world of music....
Fucked it all up, timing is way off. Half the time the kid is rushing through the easy parts (the beginning was terrible) and the other half of the time he fell so behind the beat that the whole thing seemed atempotic - and don't say that it's just free jazzing it. No sense of rhythm, sloppy, horrible cover.
@lagodacisne R U kidding? He's barely big enough to hold the bass.Yes, his timing is suspect however he is just learning. Could you have not been a little more courteous in your critique? The kid has learned all the parts. Once he gets the feel of piece and tightens up his timing it will be very very good. Great work little bass fud. Keep on playing.
@lagodacisne keep on trollin'. A 13 year old kid isn't going to play it exactly like Jaco's studio recording. I'd love to see your cover of this song.
there are few GREAT bass players who can cover this song. MAD PROPS to you, kid. put ur name out there! make a web site! you should be gigging. go to Berklee. they'll snatch u up in a heartbeat and make you mad famous, just like my old bandmate Julian Lage... if you like, shoot me an email some time. we'll chat. davidbaronstevensjr@gmail.com | anything i can do to help a young star, consider it done.
how do i get this sound? i really know how to play harmonics, but they are really quiet, and the normal notes are too loud, so what settings do i have to use??? thx
@kra2351 if your bass has a pickup closer to the bridge, crank that one up. Try plucking the strings closer to the bridge like this kid too. Those harmonics should just scream! lol
@bigemoney31 If you check out photos and videos of Jaco, look closely and you can see that he moved the bridge pickup closer to the neck in order to get the sweet spots for those 'unnatural' harmonic. I think that's an Ibanez bass the kid's playing (sorry kid I can't see your name anywhere -- are you willwh1993?) with recessed pickups so that wouldn't be an easy job, but on the Fender Jazz it's just surface-mounted so it's only a matter of a few screws.
@Nyquistic I'm pretty sure Jaco's Jazz bass was just a 62' Fender Jazz bass and I don't think there would be a way to move the bridge pickup closer to the neck without drilling out of the body. This kid is playing a Warwick Corvette which is pretty dang close to the same single coil configuration, just emphasize the bridge pickup when you're trying to get harmonics to come out clearer is all I'm saying.
@bigemoney31 I would not argue with your clearly superior knowledge (I'm not a bassist!) but there are shots out there where you can see the screw holes and the place from where the original pickup was moved -- perhaps not the bass you refer to, but my point is that it might be worth investigating pickup placement for those who are seeking these so-called 'false' harmonics. Check out Pythagoras.
Jaco was one of the best bass players that ever lived. If you practice you someday might be as good. But, he mental problems as many great artistis have, so maybe if you aren't crazy you can never reach his level.
Excellent! Props not only for being able to pull this off so well technically, but just as much for your pacing and and musicality...you need a lot more than just chops to bring this one to life, and you completely do it justice...keep it up!
If anyone knows who this kid is, contact me asap, I will seriously buy him a bass. All joking aside. Please like this so I can get this kid a better bass and camera!

@MellowDeFretwell Are you a bit dull? My point being was that I'm sure in over 3 years, the kid already has a better bass and camera. Think a bit before taking a sarcastic tone..
@buefyYT I know, they're really well-crafted basses. There are some really great Squiers too, btw. I meant that as a comparison, just in case you didn't know Rockbass was a "second brand", like entry-level or more affordable models.
@BassGrindcore oh yeah, but i'm just saying that I feel like his bass isn't bad, MEC active pickups are great, what he would need if anything is a new amp... hartke?
@buefyYT Yup, but Bartolini pickups (which are stock on Warwicks) are the best I've heard. Hartke is really good, I love aluminum cones, but when it comes to amps, EBS and Aguilar are the best choices I think (although you can never go wrong with the classic old Ampeg).
Bartolini? lies xP. they come with MEC's dude, and I would not knock those pups, because they're great. I prefer MEC's and Hartke head with Ampeg cabs, but that's just for like a victor wooten-esque style. I'll take my old J-Bass and my vintage Cabs anyday xp
@buefyYT My bad dude! I was confused. Yeah, that's right MEC pickups rule, but I still prefer Bartolinis. You and I are different bass players ;) I play extended range basses (7 string) and I like my tone as bright as possible.
hey

@BassGrindcore
Bartolini? lies xP. they come with MEC's dude, and I would not knock those pups, because they're great.
