Smith has stated on a number of occasions that this is a horror film and that the RED in the title stands for blood. Blood is red and this is a horror film.

Looks like a critical look at Christian fundamentalist cults/gangs/militias in the US. What really interested me is that Kevin Smith of all people is directing it, and I think I saw John Goodman in there! I'm interested in knowing more... the trailer didn't say much, but it hinted at the right things to get you curious.
So, what exactly is this movie suppossed to be about?? Smith got the principle right in the trailer by not giving everything away, but he didn't really give anything away.
Kevin Smith should have titled this film: "Deliverance of the Texas Chain Saw Children of the Corn" because there is absolutely nothing new about pandering to urban America's irrational fears about the rural minority that lives in-between California and the East Coast. The Westboro Baptist Church is a ridiculous bunch of people, but there is no reason to assume that, just beneath the surface, they are really a bunch of gang banging, murdering, psychos. The title of this flick has NOTHING to do with the political party system in the US. In all Actuality, this movie is a Horror movie... You know blood and gore and scary people... However nothing in the historical evolution of our party system lends credence to your claim that Republicans or Conservatives aren't bigots.
Moreover I think it should be stated that Republicans in the past twenty years have openly opposed Pro-Choice, Divorce, and Gay Rights. These facts are undeniable. Embedded in many of these policies is an underlying bigotry.

Revisionist crap. RED STATE obviously refers to Republican and they are trying to equate Phelps and his ilk with them. But Fred Phelps is a Democrat to this day. He was a 3 time Democrat gubernatorial candidate in Kansas. He held fundraisers for both Gore and Clinton. He was invited to both of Clinton's inaugurations. His son was a Gore delegate in 1988. But yeah, it must be the Republicans who are hate spewing, right?

I've listened to all of the RED STATE OF THE UNION Q&A podcasts and can tell you for a fact that the RED in the title does not stand for anything religious. Smith has stated on a number of occasions that this is a horror film and that the RED in the title stands for blood. Blood is red and this is a horror film.

Kevin Smith should have titled this film: "Deliverance of the Texas Chain Saw Children of the Corn" because there is absolutely nothing new about pandering to urban America's irrational fears about the rural minority that lives in-between California and the East Coast. The Westboro Baptist Church is a ridiculous bunch of people, but there is no reason to assume that, just beneath the surface, they are really a bunch of gang banging, murdering, psychos. It's a movie that spins the conventions of those classic Satanist/Occult thrillers from the 70s. Instead of scantly clad girls being chased through the woods, you get scantly clad boys being chased through the woods. Instead of evil, scary Satanists, you get evil scary fundamentalist Christians. They are usually the result of idiots who allow the punishments to occur instead of convincing the parties involved to be rational. Kevin Smith is not attacking Christians, republicans or conservatives. He is showing the extremists like Fred Phelps, Jim Jones and David Koresh. These are dangerous men and there are lots more like them. They are extreme fundamentalists, they are not Christians.

@JJwoods18 Dude, WTF? We PREACH about the soul-damning sins of sodomy and murdering your babies (abortion)! We don't come after people with rifles like Steven Dale Green (1 of 6 American soldiers who raped Iraqi girl, shot/burned family/house) and Ryan Newell (Disabled veteran who stalked WBC with rifle, 2 pistols, and 90 rounds of ammunition). Shut up. We have only words; no deadly weapons.
