  • I don't think this video is telling the whole truth about Samaras. He was overwhelmed and nobody would help him, I think he meant well but couldn't cope and got very angry.

  • giogisimos - you really are an idiot, if everyone thougnt like you then the world would be a terrible place!!!

  • Fuck hellASS!

  • @gajda1984 hey chill out man if 200 bastards killing dogs more then 500 trying to safe them!

  • PLEASE SUPPORT 'FRIENDS OF THE STRAYS OF GREECE'

I went to zante for my holiday & spent all my time trying to feed their stray dogs & cats... UTTERLEY DISGRACEFUL!!!! THEIR COULDN'T CARE LESS ATTITUDE. I would not go back to Greece for a holiday.

  • This guy is horrible but he is an EXTREME example. All the self-hating greeks who generalize in order to disgrace their country have to be ashamed of themselves. There are legal means in order to counter the actions of that guy, but the greek justice system is too slow because of the huge number of procedures.

  • @Atreas40000

There are hundred persons like Jimmy all over greece- no one cares there. Thats the greek system, thats what the greek goverment want to have. Jimmy is now nearly 80 years old, how long will this go on, who of the greeks will "retire" him and help him out of the situation?- you?

  • yeah, thats the greek system, and the civilized system of the good western european countries and if the usa is to have a massive extermination plan for the unwanted stray dogs. I do own a dog and I care for her, but I m not planing to become the protector of all the strays. At least I m not a sanctimonious hypocrite like you! So tell me. Why are YOU not helping out with that "Jimmy" guy being the activist that are?

  • The dogs look pretty happy to me...

  • This is Greece indeed but Mr. Samaras is a rescuer. He provides food and a place to live to these animals.

  • As we have explained so many times before, this man is a pyscho dog hoarder and the dogs would be better on the streets, they suffer from leishmoniasis, mange, starvation and every other possible horrific thing you can think of.

  • He's not a rescuer. He has these animals so the bank won't take his house. He won't allow vets etc to go in and vaccinate the animals.

  • If you visited the place, you would realise you have no idea what you are talking about.

  • "This video is not from Greece but from Albania" - you are obviously embarrassed by this video and instead of burying your head in the sand, go and visit this shelter or if you are not able, how about you help the thousands of abandoned cats and dogs?

  • This is from Greece. The guy lives in Peraia. I've met him.

  • what idiots,he is helping the abused dogs

he wishes he had more room and food for them.

  • How is this ABUSE?? He's giving them a place to LIVE and EAT. They don't have an caretakers out on the streets.

  • Write in your search engine: Robin of stray dogs - You will find a brand new movie about Jimmy Samaras and his dogs.

  • After working in Greece for 15 years and being active in the spay/neuter/vaccinate and release program - anf as one who is Greek - this man is an absolute shame to any good and responsible animal welfare worker or organisation - he needs to be closed down immediately and sent to hospital for mental treatment - he would not be allowed to allow animals to live in such conditions over here - that is for sure !

  • Samaras is actually THE HELL for dogs... He collects them from Municipalities that give him money... Then let the poor creatures die by deseases. He never takes a sick animal to the vet. Shame on people, Mayors and the bank that support this HELLHOLE!!

  • these animals arenot going to find homes and it looks like they, or some are free to come and go, at least they have company, and some shelter, beats starving alone, acid thrown on them , noses cut off, burnt with oil poisened, hung, shot, impaled, heads beat in, etc.

  • i m from greece but i agree greeks are worse than animals

  • chocomaroco ... Animals are angels compared to MOST people!

  • in what way? my greek friend is decent- what a way to talk about your countrymen. Does this include you?

  • You are incredibly stupid and use our language very poorly. I usually have sympathy for poor illiterate bastards like you. But for the inept way you chose to tell me off, you may go die in a fire. If you have children, God bless them, however, you are garbage.

  • why dosent someone just brake into the place one night and steel all the dogs?

  • HAHA-

where do you want to bring all the dogs?

Thats the greek system- put the stray problem on private persons and the animals have to suffer somewhere but not on public streets...

  • greeks are animals .

  • no we really like animals, thats why your country still exists.

  • Stop with the Drama peta-fags. Lets worry about child abuse first.

  • Im with you brother or sister

  • ... I rember maby long time ago? somebody posted that Most greeks are gay.

  • are you high? gay or not, who cares! and actually most gays anywhere love animals.

  • .... the authorities know about what's going on there, but NOBODY cares. The journalist responsible for this video and for airing it on TV took Samaras to court ... guess what?! She LOST the case!!!!

  • I was just writing to somebody about the 'death row hell' of Samaras and wanted to copy the link to this video, which was shown on Greek TV (there were 2 other programmes about it) when I saw the comment below. YES, the horror place is still there, the crazy man still collects dogs (and they are left at the gates by people who want to 'dispose' of their unwanted dogs/puppies)... I too did what I could to stop the horror from continuing, after my visit there (under false pretences) in 2003 ....

  • well if i were a dog in greece, i'd rather be with my own by Samaras, then alone.

  • carrotsmell .... you don't have a clue what you're talking about!!! So in your opinion it's OK to take dogs into a place which is full of diseases, lack of food to a point where at times there's CANNIBALISM .... sick dogs are never treated, the females give birth to puppies who rarely if ever grow up, because they either die from disease or get killed/eaten by other dogs ... the bloody government should throw the man into a mental asylum, then and only then could the dogs be properly helped.

  • YOu Carrot smell have the same opinion like the mayor of Jimmy Samaras, so Jimmy is still responsible to take the problematic dogs out of the area- without payment or medical support, or neutering programs-

happy new year- at the same time all neutering programs in Thessaloniki are put on ice

  • Wrong answer!! If you knew anything about Samaras, you would not wish that on any dog.

  • Thanks for all People to help Animals !

  • burn in hell you low life scumbags.

  • And as I said in a previous post. This video was presented on greek TV a long time ago. It is more essential to check whether Samaras is still allowed to continue his activities ... Somebody needs to take action (and I don't exlude myself of course) instead of standing aside and watch mentally sick people behaving like that:-(

  • Banzaidawan, those 'nazis' are those who have recorded the video and have reported the problem on TV and those who are taking action to tackle with it. For your information ET3 is a public greek channel. It's easy when you sit comfortably on your chair insulting others....

  • Bunch of NAZIS.

  • And these sick people were allowed to host the 2004 Olympics? Now is not 1000 B.C.

  • They seem to be having this same problem in Houston, Texas. Dogs, cats, doesn't matter. People that do this seriously need to be kept an eye on even after a jail sentence because it is a mental illness.

  • sorry what?

  • that is sad =(

  • There is a difference between Dog and Human abuse. Dogs can't run away nor do they know that you're gonna harm them. Well i guess sometimes they do. But we are stronger and we should respect them. They do a lot of good to us like for example, search dogs, dogs for the blind etc. Every dog abuser should be punished harshly. Humans at least have the choice to run away or try to. Now wars in countries are old news. There's nothing we can do. Oligarchies control the wars. Sorry for the grammer.

  • Wow, am off to greece now to be so awkward to them. One dog abuser i see will get there fingers snapped off.

  • I am currently running a petition against animal abuse in Greece, if you would like to sign it please send me a pm and i will give you the link, this has to stop.

  • I swear to God, if I were to see someone abusing a dog infront of me, I would kick his ass so bad that he would eat his food through a straw for the rest of his life.

  • stupid...

people are die ing in africa or all around the world from hunger, aids and wars which emperyalist countires has created for to have these countries tressures and goods.....and u r caring about dogs...

    fuk u all...

  • mature aren't you? So what are you saying? That people should ignore animal abuse? No they shouldn't, because animals are just as important as humans!!! It's people like you who make me sick!!!!

  • i accept all you said...except "because animals are just as important as humans!"

  • Why?

  • how it can be cara..dont wanna hurt your feeling about anything..

but i cant compare dog and a human...

dont missunderstood me please..i am also agaist animal killing and destroying nature...

ok..maybe i am wrong..i dont know..animals have soul as well

  • @CaraJewel NO THEY ARE NOT! People have dreams for their feature and can understand more what's hapening around them! Also humans have fight to be in this conditions (and it took thousand of years of hard work) whil dogs haven't done anything( the only thing they care about is how to spend their day). Εach kind must suport his kind and not the other's (that's nature). Even more there are ppl in MUCH worst standards of living than these dogs, we first must care about them! In fact dogs abuse cat!

  • @CaraJewel you will tell me that dogs, haven't got the mind to improve their standards of living... well nature choose humans to be clever! (nature is anfair)

  • Anyone for a greek kebab -he is mental

lock him up and treat him l ike that

he should be arrested for hitting her

  • More to the point where will they go if not there ? As for the Guy responsible (I could not help but notice)the dogs are NOT afraid of HIM !?

The woman is clearly offended by the presense of the dogs, and sadly not their condition.

  • You're right ...the people who dump the dogs there are also responsible for the situation ... and the authorities don't care! In a way, Samaras is helping to solve their problem, that's why he gets some help from them. The dogs may not be afraid of him, but they don't know that they are not receiving proper care, so they just suffer in silence. There's never enough food either. Most of the dogs are not sterilised, so they breed...

  • By the way, while Samaras' place may be convenient local people to dump their unwanted dogs thousands more puppies/adult dogs are abandoned in Thessaloniki and in its suburbs ... as is the case everywhere else in Greece. Of course it's illegal to abandon animals, but people do it because they can, because animal welfare laws exist only on paper!!If they were implemented and the culprits were dealt with & fined, things would perhaps be different ... sadly, nothing much is changing year in, year out!

  • Bonniekali, I will take a guess that you have been active in this mater for a while now, as you come across as being both angry and worn down by the situation. I am not the one to tell you to calm down, as I do understand the frustration you are feeling, (probably much more than you can imagine); I would like to think though that we could do more, to help find a better solution, for these annimals. I would have stipulated that local media will be of little help, they have Gossip to find and Air.

  • I do on the other hand think that we should be making sure that this isn't brushed under the carpet. Maybe it's time we dragged it all back up and out in the open, using the Internet once again. I would like to Help make this happen, and will do whatever I can to Spread the word further (beyond Greece), and would also like to know more about the situation (all sides), and once the problems are clear start to resolve them. Is there somewhere I can get further information ???

  • Since you live in Greece, why not go to Thessaloniki yourself and see the place?? A word of caution though -Samaras is not a person with whom it's easy to co-operate. I've been there in 2003 and was horrified by what I saw ... even dogs dying in front of my eyes! Subsequently I prepared a 3 page report & video and sent it to all the authorities, from the prime minister to head veterinary dept. in Athens and Thessaloniki ... all to no avail!! The reporter responsible for the above video ... cont.

  • cont .... took over from where I left off and fought for months to get the public prosecutor to look at the evidence and charge Samaras with gross neglect of animals etc .... as mentioned earlier, she 'lost' the case!! Oh, and just to add that after Samaras learned that I sent reports to the authorities, I received threatening & obscene phone calls from him ... I taped them and sent those to the authorities as well, only to be totally ignored!! So much for Greek justice system!!

  • Bonniekali, I hope I haven't offended you... I have every intention of viewing the place, (though I have no idea how I will get there...), and I thank you for your tips regarding Mr.Samaras, It never crossed my mind that he would be pleased to see me! On that note, I have had to deal with people when they are in the worst possible state of mind, and if at all possible, get a positive result from them. I admire your efforts and dedication to this problem, and fear the outcome if you...

  • Of course you haven't offended me!! Whgat makes you think that? Alas, I'm VERY familiar with the situation at Samaras', hence my pessimistic remarks. I believe that the property would be repossessed by the bank if Samaras lived there on his own, but who would take legal action to evict him if he has 100 plus animals on the property, so in a way, they are his 'hostages'.Tragically, Samaras is just one of MANY 'animal hoarders in Greece, though the rest are women (at least as far as I'm aware of).

  • Yes I did hear that point of view on the Video. So fine... How about this ? Why not get the current location better equiped to deal with the situation. I really don't care about a bank that can't have their property back; At this stage it is not to the dogs bennefit; Medical care would be however. There are plenty of Vets in Thessaloniki; How many of them volunteer any time? Is it the case that Samaras would refuse the offer of medical supplies and a Vets Help?

    Desposal of Dead annimals-Law?

  • We could go on indefinitely debating this issue and I'm afraid I just don't have the time. However, for your information,NUMEROUS people have tried to help over the years, but it always goes back to Samaras wanting to run things HIS way! No, no Greek vets offer their services free, though several FOREIGN vets have sterilised dogs there for free, but there are dozen things which need to be done there- what's the point of treating dogs for mange if EVERY corner of the place is full of infections??

  • What is the point of treating one disease, when Leishmania - the most serious disease - is very common there, yet Samaras refuses to put a Leishmania positive dog to sleep. You put something right and something else goes wrong and then the problems pile up. Samaras is NOT an animal lover the way I understand it ... google the words 'animal hoarders' and you will understand what I mean. And if you think you can succeed where everybody else failed, good luck to you ... I mean it!

  • I guess I understand more now. Thank you for the time you dedicated to me, you gave me plenty of information. It could be that you are right and that when the Bank gets their property back, or Samaras has had enough and gives up, the problem will have no option but to solve itself. No doubt time will tell.

Thank you again for all the Information.

  • ... and others like you, get dissappointed to the point of giving up.

I was trying to get across that I would like to support your efforts and offer You any backing I can... I'm just not sure how as of yet. That was why I wanted more information.

  • The Greek Animal Welfare Fund and Greek Animal Rescue are both aware of this man and his activities and also of the failed case against him. It is hard to get the authorities to act against him but we should all keep trying. The local authority probably finds him useful as a place to take the strays it collects to - keeping them off the streets. If there was an organised protest from foreign visitors about him the authorities might take more of an interest I suppose. And from Greeks too!

  • Xenikia I tend to agree with most the points you made, though in what you are saying you too, seem to be of the opinion that Mr.Samaras is the problem; I fail to this!

    Taking him out of the equation changes nothing. (I do not view the discomfort of his neighbours at this time as a priority !) You seem to have stated yourself that the issue is allowed to carry on because it may be easier for the Gonernment, or because the Government has not been presented with an alternative (FREE) solution;

  • I agree Samaras isn't the problem. It's that current law allows the Samarases of Greece to go on collecting and shamefully neglecting the animals in their care. So a change in the law is what we must press for. Perhaps if we could campaign (in the Ministry?) for the regulations that apply to granting a licence for keeping such an establishment to be tightened. What if the signatures of three vets was enough to close someone like that down? It still leaves the question of where they would go.

  • YES. YES. ? YES. I agree with every point you made, and forsee the following problems: 3 Signatures, will not make a difference... 300 Vets signatures from around the Globe... Might! Campaigning in the ministry could bring a positive result and media coverage until we get thrown out, arrested for someting stupid, or more than likely, have to go back to our jobs, families and various other obligations. We will never be able to strong-arm the Gevernment, Sooo... FACTS & FIGURES to the EU.

  • Bonniekali I thank you for your fast response to my questions but I really don't know what the solution is. I fear that the killing of of 130 annimals (humane or not) is not a real answer. If this was not an ongoing problem, then clearly the number would have quickly become 100 then 75 then 50 until they all died; Clearly the dogs are not lessening in numbers, so where are they coming from?

  • The only way this nightmare will come to an end is when Samaras dies!! If it was the case of only sorting out what's there and no more, that could be achieved with the help of some societies & shelters abroad. However, dogs/puppies are being dumped daily there ... out of sight, out of mind - those who dump them don't care if they live or die. Money alone couldn't improve matters ... Samaras doesn't put to sleep even DYING dogs and he likes to be be in total control ...

  • Does anybody know what the outcome was for this guy and the dogs he had in his care? Can anybody even tell me when these videos were televised?

Is this particular issue an ongoing problem in 2008?

  • ET3 TV channel showed the footage in 2004 and I'm sad to say that NOTHING has changed since. The last report I had about the place was 2 months ago, saying there were about 100 adult dogs and 30 puppis. Most of them have mange, they don't receive ANY veterinary care - of course the puppies don't survive for long -parvo and distemper kills off most of them and some are killed and eaten by other dogs. No, I'm not exaggerating!!! If you watch through the above footage you will see 'cannibalism.'

  • It's well known that the legal framework in Greece makes it very difficult to shut down the terrible animal collectors. The syndrome is not acknowledged as an identifiable psychological condition in Greece. Closing these places down, as they undoubtedly should be, means trying to find somewhere for the animals to go - and in the teeth of determined resistance from the "owners". There is often no alternative accomodation for them. It's a very difficult problem. Welfare groups do what they can.

  • And WHY is this so, Evgenia??? It would be kinder to humanely put to sleep all animals existing a life of misery and pain in these 'Dachau' hell-holes, but no, there's no legal framework' to do this either. So who gives a damn?! Sooner or later these death row prisons WILL have to be dealt with when, one by one, the mad nutters start dying ... what then?? As is so typical in Greece, everybody ignores problems until they are absolutely forced to deal with them!

  • gamw tis manes tous opoioi kanoun kako se zwa..na kaoun stin kolasi oi bastardoi

  • shame to greek people

  • Fuck those fucking pigs...

    Shamed to be Greek.....

  • To those that are Greek and ashamed to be... when did you last send some money to one of the welfare groups that work to improve things for dogs like these? There are many out there and they need YOUR help. On a more cheerful note: this video was clearly shown on Greek national TV. It clearly disapproves of what's going on. That's something. But a hell of a lot more needs to be done. So, come on. Join your local welfare group, or, if there isn't one in YOUR area, form one and GET TO WORK!

  • To clarify! Yes, the film footage was shown on ET3 TV, thanks to a very determined reporter, who fought hard to get the 'death row prison' (Samaras' hell-hole in Thessaloniki!!) closed down. She took Samaras to court and despite the fact that the public prosecutor knew about the video footage etc, the reporter (M.T.) LOST the case. Disgusted and distraught, she left her TV job! And what did / are the authorities doing about this case?? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!

  • In addition, Evgenia, the authorities are not doing anything to stop all other mad animal collectors in Greece. I personally know about at least a dozen and between them they have around 2000 dogs and 400 cats. Why don't YOU and the organisation you work for do something about these horrible cases?? Why don't you push the authorities to do something?? I have done everything I personally could, but it needs somebody from Greece to tackle this problem!!

  • One of the tow sames to be greek...

the first is the government and the second the thinks happed cause of the government!

  • I coming from Greece too and I am really I field so ashamed for this terrible video.

So pain for these pure animals

I really I hope all you people to send this video in every person that you know.

    Maybe this would help.

I really field so ashamed that I am a Greek.

  • This is outrageous.I am Greek too and I really am ashamed of this and unfortunately it's not the only case of do abuse that has developed in Greece. But,we shouldn't be ashamed to be Greek because it happens and in other countries. We just have to get the government and those people to see the light and actively DO something. That's all there is to it.

  • I would suggest that we take action instead of watching the video and complaining. If such things happen whoever broke the law should be prosecuted and judicially punished!

  • Eleos dhladh... Eleos...

  • I cant belive this video.. I feel so sick.. Where are these dogs now??

  • I met Samaras 3 years ago when I visited his "shelter" wich in fact is a concentration campfor dogs. He is mentally unstabil and dangerous. I have done what I can, visited nomarch Psomiadis several times but for no use... I´m half greek and go to Thessaloniki every summer. This is a huge disgrase for the city...I don´t know what else to say or to do...

  • Animal cruelty is a global problem, every country has this issue so speak up for animals wherever suffering occurs. The animals don't understand which country they are in or the nationality of human beings, all they know is pain hurts, they feel pain like we do so they must be granted protection & given food, shelter, water & freedom to exhibit normal functions for their species such as being able to move freely, not caged, beaten, neglected or murdered.

  • I pray that you, Samaras and all the others like you get Cancer and suffer a long, lingering painful death, you Bastard

God has abandoned you for sure!

  • ελλας το μεγαλειο σου

  • I am 100% Greek. The only thing I want to say is that ALL of us Greeks should DO sth about it except for complaining. As for Turkey...I don't even WANT to know what they're doing there to animals.

  • The latest atrocity that has happened on the island of Kos .... some bastard has been hanging dogs on one tree over a period of a few months ... 2 'fresh' bodies and another SEVEN decomposed ... the dogs were hanged in such a way they would have died agonisingly slowly ...

  • KRIMA ELLADA

  • bu ne rezillik len, o hayvanları sikiyonuzmu? satıyonuzmu yoksa her ikisi birden mi? bu ne rezalet rezil rumlar.

  • in Turkey is better re malaka??? ay gamisou!

  • I guess you've never met a Greek before!

  • Come on guys you cannot be talking seriously?! What is your point? Whether such things happen in other countries or the measures we should take in order to eliminate the problem? Btw armandotgrtr had you read the Bible you wouldn't be talking like that. Let me remind you that jesus was born in a stable surrounded by cattle and it was their breath that kept him warm....

  • iARMANDOGTR : What you wrote...is it a joke? When Turkish put alive dog in trash truck ...watch carefully , turkish people are dirtiest even......

  • I am myself actively involved in animal protection. This is an appeal to everyone:

    - Feed them and give them water whenever possible.

    - Whenever you can afford to: bring one or more dogs to a veterinarian to perform a castration.

    - conduct explanatory work.

    - Apply pressure to the government to end this situation.

  • I live in Greece and im not Happy about it there are dogs without owners everhywhere!Back in Norway u dont see this kind of things there are no dogs without owners there!

  • ur get ur time ur a big man come to me lets sea how big u are big up turkey and ma kurds peace

  • I feel so bad that i was born in this country...

  • Greeks have mercy for animals, but I have to say that these people are horrible ( I mean the people in the video). OMG... poor animals... :(

i can translate what they say

they just describe the all things that happened in that....hell for dogs

    soz about my english

    it says to much

i cant translate all the video

but i sure that you dont want to listen what it says......

  • God! I hate these people! Poor dogs. They just treat them so fucking bad!

  • is there anyone that can translate? cuz i have no idea what they are saying

  • Bonniekali it would be really helpful if you could reference your work. You said you are working for greek animal welfare for 20 years and that you have created your own shelter so please give me a name and a location. Please do it in public in sake of the possibility that someone is going to find it and help you..

  • i don't defend anyone. Is his mistake to take all this dogs while he can't provide them what they need. The point is that the state should do something. Closing down the place or fixing it up no matter what samaras says or wants. The 600 i mentioned was said in the video i didn't figure it out or visited the place. I am not sure if you really got the point of my messages.

  • Doesn't make a difference if are Greek or French or Chinese or or or.

The state should along with citizens to protect the animals and to support all the individual efforts.

  • Animal welfare laws are not applied in Greece. The man who 'runs' this death-row prison only collects dogs - they never receive any veterinary treatments, the majority of females are not sterilised .... Samaras claims to be the BIGGEST ANIMAL RESCUER IN Europe .... what a joke!

  • But the state instead of imediately aplying the laws and improve the buildings hire some personell and take responsibility over the poor animals does nothing. Already are sides for the place and against it.

But no solution. And i don't think something is going to be done. Are 600 dogs there.

Are poeple that love animals and are others that don't .

  • Is the man an animal rescuer?? No, a hoarder, whose animals are merely 'hostsges', because if he didn't have any animals there, the bank would repossess the land & house. There are around 200 dogs there, not 600!!! The die from the diseases almost faster than they arrive ...

    Is this animal welfare??

  • The old person you watch at video was famous and rich and he spent all his fortune for the animals.

  • So you know Samaras??? And you defend him?? Have you seen with your own eyes the misery suffered by the dogs??? Most of them have mange, Leishmania etc ... what hope do they have? NONE!! OK, the state is just as guilty ... they should NOT ALLOW these horrors to continue, but why should they care?? At least they have fewer strays on the streets!

  • This the result of the Greek State's policies over the years. At the start gathering the animals to this place was a good solution for the mayors and the rest. The problem was not on their responsibility.

  • Whichever way you look at it, the dogs deserve a better life than the misery, hunger, diseases etc that they get! There are many 'hoarders' in Greece ... google 'animal hoarders' and you will find many websites which talk about this issue ... Hoarding has nothing to do with love, but with CONTROL, because hoarders are social outcasts (they created this way of life themselves), though they like to be seen as 'saviours'.

  • i dont really understand, is this an bad animal shelter? Is it an animal collector? Or WHAT IS THIS?

  • it is suposed to be an animal hospital... but i think people who run this are animals... they do it for money and they dont care :(

  • HOSPITAL? Like a veterinarian clinic for strays or something? Thats sick! The dogs die, are thinn, looking really sick. And thats what they call a "animal hospital"? So sad to watch...

  • Guys I am from Greece also but I do not consider all this brutality to be our heritage!

We cannot consider all Greek citizens being bloody b......s because of some monstrous beings who are considered to be human beings!!

    God forbid!

  • The UK is no heaven for all creatures, but it's not the hell Greece is!!! After being involved for 20 years in helping animals in Greece (and it started with a 'holiday'), I know only too well how cruelly animals are treated ... I have hundreds of awful pictures, depicting animal suffering in Greece, including dogs who have been hanged, set alight on purpose, blinded by having lime thrown in a face, poisoned and taking hours to die ....

  • Bonniekali what exactly are you doing?? You are repeating the same comment about your 20 years of expertise in Greek stupidity over animals again and again... OK! WE GOT IT!!! People coming on this thread to comment are already interested Greeks. No need to exaggerate. You insist on making it a Greek issue while you neglect the wealth of information provided by internet about your country's atrocities... Stop being irritating to people that you don't have to...

  • A fair point, but what does it say about the authorities who turn a blind eye to what's happening there! For God's sake, even cannibalism is taking place!!

  • i'm Greek & i live in Greece ,so, i can tell you that people in greece are realy bad to animals.i have seven dogs.but we can not do to many things if the goverment dosent care...

  • i am from greece but i agree with you gues!this countre is beatiful but most of the people are sick and bastardes!!!!

  • Life as a foreign ( especially lady ) is not easy - let me tell you because I was seen as a foreign person there - because I was adopted out of the country as a baby - returning to work in my field of animal welfare 33 years later ! When you live daily and see the horrors - nothing can make the beautiful side of Greece seem beautiful to us ! That my friend is the reality of it !

  • You should know that I'm not proud of many aspects of my country and believe me I don't need the help of anyone (especially a foreigner)to locate those aspects. I just said that it's not fair to make generalized comments. Now about the British Lady allow me to have my opinion about british mentality!

  • We as outsiders sometimes see better than those who are living with the problems day to day - Kindness has to start somewhere - you can do much for your animals there as it seems to me it is one extreme to the other - no middle road for these animals in the mean time they suffer terribly ! The problem is caused by the people and it is up to the people to sort it HUMANELY !

  • NO you can't know or see better because you are not Greek and you are not there but I guess that's the reason you have said nothing about native volunteers. In this video I hear only greek voices complaining or am I wrong? And its from ET3 and not BBC, or am I again mistaken? And the woman that gets hurt in the end is greek or am I totally blind? You know I am puzzled with your need to feel emotionally superior to Greeks and their work but heyho...

  • What you don't know is that the man who runs this 'death row prison' was taken to court several times, the last following the ET3 & Maria Topalidou exposure, but guess what ... he was found 'not guilty' of animal neglect and cruelty. CANNIBALISM was witnessed, diseases not treated .. even suffering & dying animals were not humanely euthanised ..

  • I am Greek and I was there working straight in the heart of it all for 15 years - in the field of animal welfare from slaughtering of food animals to the spay and neutering of strays - and the setting up of shelters - so please do not tell me what I know to be right or wrong about MY COUNTRY AND MY PEOPLE !

  • Arrogance and false pride are often the reason why animal welfare problems in Greece are not improving much. The so-called 'foreigners' fund most of the animal welfare & rescue work in Greece, only to be criticised and told to 'mind their own business'. Poisoning is almost an acceptable method of 'stray control' ... stop being so defensive ....

  • There is a comment I've being trying to post some time now but i can't. My main point is that i don't think greece there is need for imported sensitivity. There are countries where cats and dogs are eaten for breakfast and natives don't care at all and you are telling me about greece. No thanks. Visit peta and see

  • But unlike Greece, those countries have not reaped huge benefits from being a member of the EU and from the tourists!! And Greece is no longer a 'cheap' country to visit .. go to Santorini, for example, or anywhere else, for that matter. I know Greece well .... been helping animals there for TWENTY years, because they're being neglected and abused. You are a typical Greek ... defensive but not truthful ...

  • truthful to what? I am defensive because i don't identify with those images and my mentality is totally different and I know I'm not the only one. If you want talk about greek governments and not greek people.

PS:If you want cheap you don't go to Santorini, you go to Samothraki

  • Sure, the Greek government is indifferent, animal welfare laws are NOT implemented, but it IS the Greek people who poison strays (and indirectly, owned animals & wildlife too). And I don't go to Greece as a 'torist' (haven't for 20 years!), but to visit some of those our society (founded by me after a 'holiday' in Greece in 1987)supports and I was on Santorini only for a few hours,en route to Ios.

  • Also, a lot of animal cruelty is committed by people who don't see it as 'cruelty' ... like the HOBBLING of horses, mules, donkeys, goats etc .... and by the way, hobbling is supposed to be ILLEGAL< but since animal welfare laws in Greece are not implemented .... Tens of thousands of dogs throughout Greece (& islands) spend 24/7 chained, often their 'home' is just a rusty oil drum .... I pity them even more than strays!

  • I totally identify!! Greece is a beautiful country, but that beauty pales into insignificance once the plight of animals is seen .... Yes, there are many caring Greeks, but overall, too few and animal welfare improvements too slow. Greece is no longer an impoverished third world country, but it acts like one!! A Greek national described Greece as a FOURTH world country!!

  • I don't like my way so I'm changing it. Sorry for being that much defensive but that's my natural response to certain comments. We are in the same side I guess so there is no need for something more to say.

    have a good day!

  • I am glad we are on the same side - I wish I had known you when I was there working - I miss much about Greece but the thought of returning even to see my parents is difficult because I don't know if I can be there without getting involved again - it makes it hard to leave :(

  • BRAVO!!! And in closing, let me say that I have many friends in Greece, who battle daily against people's ignorance and indifference to animal welfare problems. Many 'foreign' vets have offered their services ' for free', to sterilise etc, but the Greek vet. society refuse to let them do that. Some still do, but 'on a quiet', because all they care about is helping animals.

  • People should know this is only one side of greek animal treatment. Obviously noone can be proud for those images but generalized comments don't tend to appreciate the efforts of other people that give their lives and fortunes for the protection of animals. And one other thing, having the governments we do (that we ellect them) should not make us feel embarassed of being Greek, this is stupid. We just need to become more politically informed and energetic. ;)
