  • I rode the Acela yesterday from Stamford to Boston. I know the top track speed is 150MPH, but my GPS recorded a top speed of 167MPH around Kingston!! And my God it really felt that fast.

Anyone ever heard of the Acela's doing more than 150MPH?

  • Oil Corporations hate fast electric trains !

  • U never know don't know yet

  • Nice trains. Thumbs up! :)

  • Good thing is there can be a chance we can get a faster train in the future

  • @mquiroz90 Naw, Republicans will kill it. Because of them we can't have nice things.

  • @pr0t0color And as long as we have as many pro-lifers as we do who will always vote Republican no matter what the U.S. will NEVER have high-speed rail. The Devil himself, with all his negative credentials, could still easily win an election without even cheating as long as he says he'll cut taxes and is anti-abortion.

  • They won't ever have any of this in the South because of all of these dumb truck lovers.

  • Ys the desing is very old see the spanish AVE S-112

  • Yes the acela goes fast

  • Is this the american ICE?

  • I saw yo mama run that fast when she saw a sign that said doughnuts. jk. sweet video. I'd love to ride one of those sometime!!

  • damn, you need some faster zoom..

  • nice video, the train set itself donr look bad, of crose it wont compare to Shinkansen LOL

if here in US they has more elctrified track prpbably would have some nicer trains ......

  • @night1204 we have plans to replace these trains by 2015 , and we have over 5050 electrified track miles in the Northeast with plans of 4000-7000 more miles over the next 3 decades.

  • Oh my god, the americans say that they are sooooo modern but the trains are crap in design! Take a look at here in Europe, for example France, Germany ect........!

  • @FirebirdL32 when have we said that , are trains are made by Asians mostly and these will be replaced by 2015.

  • @FirebirdL32 Are you referring to aesthetic appeal? If so, that does not make American trains any less inferior to European trains.

Besides, the Acela itself is capable of speeds far greater than 150MPH. The old track and catenary are the limiting factors. Amtrak currently has plans on replacing and adding additional high-speed dedicated track.

  • Love those announcements. Who is the lucky son-of-a-gun who's job it was to do that famous voice-over?

  • 1:19 the sgin on the fence is shaking!

  • I love the bell on that AEM-7

  • Very good ;D

  • @Mega challenger I did before and I brock my rist and had to get a metal rod In it so my advice is never do It unlest u want to feel unbaring pain

  • I have understood their max speed is 170 mph...

  • i dare you to reach out and touch it.

  • why does the Acela seem faster than the shinkansen trains when it is like 30mph slower?

  • @k2477456: Shinkansens can be 16 cars long, so it takes longer for the entire train to pass.

  • @cchan006 merry christmas

  • @k2477456 And the shinkansens cars are much longer

  • @k2477456 , The length is 1 factor, I also think the Acela is bypassing in a smaller space. Most Japanese platforms that are bypassed at highspeed have 3 or 4 tracks with wider platforms. This video has 2 tracks with small, narrow platforms, making the camera feel the shockwave @ 1:02 .

  • @k2477456 It doesn't look as fast as a Shinkansen... not even close, though the jigging side to side on the crummy rails might make the Acela look like it is going faster than it really is.

  • 130 mph tops

  • Cool American trains :) Is there any Acelas in New York, St Louis or Hartford (Connecticut)?

  • @Umarmasmakija: New York, yes. Harford and St. Louis, no, although Acelas run along near the Connecticut coast, through New Haven.

  • @Umarmasmakija The Acela Express runs Boston -> Providence -> New Haven -> New York -> Trenton -> Philadelphia -> Wilmington -> Baltimore -> Washington D.C.

  • @Umarmasmakija The Acela line is electric, and they (AMTRAK) redid the right-of-way where they could (super elevated curvs, tilt cars, restringing cantonary). It goes from South Boston, MA -> Provadence, RI, along the shore of Connecticut through New Haven, to Penn Station in NYC, through New Jersey, Deleware, PA, Baltamore, Maryland, to Washington DC. That is knkown as the Northeast Corridor (NEC). Hartford is further North and there is no electrification North of New Haven.

  • It costs 40% more to operate the electric trains than a traditional PAX train. Your tax dollars at work!

  • En USA el sistema ferroviario está atrasado en 50 años con respecto a Europa. Pueda ser que hagan el TAV entre Los Angeles y San Francisco.

  • You will enjoy this train only until you have ridden the Japanese Super express Shinkansen trains at 300 km/h and notice how smooth, stable, comfortable and quiet they are. Boy these Amtrak trains are noisy.

  • It's weird... You know the Acela is traveling at a speed of roughly 75-100 mph yet it seems so slow!

  • Only person that could stop this would be chuck norris.

  • @mquiroz90 Unfortunatly, most politicians don't want to.

  • Great video

  • they should seriously consider installing some kind of barrier where the yellow line is.

  • wow, good thing you were behind the yellow line - lol.

  • Acela is really cool in my (not to personal) opinion. I also like how fast it goes (safe high speed: 150mph; highest speed: around 165mph) on the NEC. It must be a really smooth ride, and very time-conservative (although rail travel is quite expensive because today's economy is rock-bottom). It's a very admirable train system for anyone liking fast rail travel or just a nice run on the rails.

  • That train was traveling at least 60 or so MPH

  • like our trains in europa ,the sound

  • If only that speed of 150 mph could be achieved on most of the Boston-Washington line, it would be fantastic!

Hey, you, Gordon302, yes, I mean you, Gordon302, you are a JERK, you neanderthal jackass! You cromagnon man!

  • "Niggers approaching...Please watch out for crime."

  • @Gordon302 approaching... please watch out for syphilis infested penises

  • I would like that sound signal at says "Train approaching! Please stay behind yellow line!" in my area so I can get the camera out earlier and I always get the trains on camera about a few seconds late. It does take a while for it to turn on, waste like 5 or 6 seconds :(

  • I hope that Illinois get this type of train set or the Siemens for their upgraded tracks running from Chicago to St Louis, there constructing the High speed rail system right now.

  • かっこいい!

  • I was on the 172 to NYC. I got off at NY Penn.

  • Peep, peep! Percy is a really useful engine.

  • Train approaching, please remain behind yellow line!

  • This is the fastest american train? It looks like dirt compared to the japanese shinsaken.

  • OK what you mind as an High speed train ... Is the usual speed (100 to 120 mile/hour) of European trains BEFORE they got High Speed ... Nowadays the 200 mph is High speed

  • @Stepbystep3007 and....?

  • I seriously think that they should erect guard rails along these pedestrian platforms. It looks like an accident waiting to happen. Nice catch.

  • ALL ABOARD!!

  • Track Quality + Low Speeds, Acela here is doing Barely 70 mph

  • How many 6 and 7 car acela express sets are they?

  • @Cazkumali There are no designated sets, additional cars can be added or taken off at Washington (Ivy City Terminal) and Boston MA, these are the only two locations this can be done, the "sets" are considered semi-permanent, the rumors floating around are that if ridership keeps increasing, the Acela's will go to an 8 car consist in the next year ot two. Hope that answered your question dude.

  • 1:02 did that train hit you?

  • @huntdude555 No. If it hit him he'd have lost an arm or worse. It was the wind from the train that hit him.

  • Funny, in Europe trains may not pass stations at higher speeds than 100mph. They have to drive in seperate tracks if they want to pass a station at high speed.

  • If the asshole republicans have thier way, this will be the only HSR inthe country. Gas is over 4 bucks a gallon and they want to defeat HSR. Real dicks.

  • @mmcckkgg Don't be sad, gas in Europe is around 1.6€ for a Litre, which is around $8/US gal. :(

  • @mmcckkgg Haha, you still think there's a difference between the two parties.. Comical!

  • We need more Acelas, and Mag-lev trains, BAR-NONE!!!

  • @bairives63 They first need to make the Acela an HSR. Apart from a few stretches of track it is only traveling a near conventional speeds. NYC boston at 3;30 hrs is ridiculous as an "HSR", it should be about 1 hr.

  • Back in the early 90's Amtrak brought over a set of ICE and the Swedish train. They ran both and used them as a guide when designing the Acela. I rode on the ICE out of NYC.The government doesn't support the railroad like other nations for many reasons, mainly because of political lobbying for other industries. Biden is a fan because he uses it, but others don't want it.It's a shame, trains are the way to go. Amtrak revenues are up and moving a lot of people, hope money goes their way soon.

  • @evantis121: They don't use high platforms where there is also heavy freight traffic, as the side clearance is not enough. There are at some stations (commuter) short high platforms for the mobility impaired, but a bridge plate is used between the platform and

train. CSX and P&W railroads use this line..

  • @evantis121:They don't use high platforms on stations that also run freight trains as the side clearance is not enough. These tracks are used by CSX and P&W railroads.

  • I like fast trains - but they're only good for densely connected population zones. US has enough of these densely connected urban centers to justify investing in HSR.

  • 2 people didn't remain behind the yellow line

  • american TGV

  • @gamesfreak699 lol. this far from a TGV or ICE. but good to see they try it.

that looks all a bit obsolete compared to eurpean standards. but no wonder. individual traffic is held dear in the US for some strange reasons.

  • @plusBln Oh Yes!!!!! I just returned from Germany and rode the ICE trains- just for the fun of it.....Those trains go HYPER QUICK........It's too bad the US won't just give into the high speed realm like our foreign countries counterparts.....

  • @toofreshtoday The funny thing is we were the kings of high speed rail before we decided to build the interstate highway system

  • @MrZkr123 too true, the interurbans were way ahead of their time. here in chicago they ran at about 70-80mph i believe. now all we have is the Metra which tops out at 55 (but is very comfortable)

  • @alexzhu1

Actually, the lowest 'maximum authorized speed' for Metra (Excluding curves, etc. Im talking about the mainlines) is 65, and that is on the electric line. All of the other lines are either 70 or 79mph.

  • @MrZkr123 Most people prefer to fly if they're travelling across the continent, and they generally don't do it every day. Population density in the northeast is what made the Acela viable. So the case for cross-continental HSR is less convincing than in Europe.

  • I might see some of this action when going to new york the northeast corridor.

  • What a fucking joke...high speed my ass lol

  • America does me proad with these express trains

  • Hope we'll soon have the Maglev

  • Nice looking train.

  • Nice to see a Acela at highspeed. Compared with the 186mph ICE here it's a litle bit slow. ;-) But on the other hand, there are few tracks that can do that in Germany, too.

A highspeed train network through the U.S. could take much passengers of planes. A pity that no one in the government is realizing that.

  • @ceaabe I agree....I love the riding on the ICEs in Germany....so cool and so FAST!!!!! Our government is so dense sometimes....we are complaining about the rising cost of oil needed to make jet fuel and gasoline

-- if they commit to a HSR network they would lighten the dependency on oil by a huge amount....not to mention fewer cars on the road...smh...

  • How can they let the Acela Express go 150 mph but not the Northeast Regional? Are not built to go that fast?

  • @MrSuperAwesomes: There may be limitations on how fast the Amfleet cars can go. Although AEM-7's top speed is 125 mph, I'm not sure if the design can handle faster speeds.

  • @cchan006 amfleets handle 125 amazingly well they wizz by usually at that speed in most areas that they can but i don't think they can go any faster

  • @cchan006 You can drive one of these on microsoft train simulator

  • @cchan006 And when the occasional double-ended HHP-8 (the type used on the Acela) is coupled on the front, the speed is still doesn't head upwards of 125. The Amfleets can go 125 (they ran at 125 on the Metroliners) but probably not more--otherwise when an HHP-8 was providing HEP, they would most likely increase the speed, right? It makes sense. Or, the Amfleets can go faster, but Amtrak wants to make sure no Regional trains can go as fast as the Acela so they can still charge more for it.

  • @cchan006 this is only fast train we have in usa soon or later we well have trains going 220 mph

  • @MrSuperAwesomes there area a couple areas one in RI in between Mystic, Ct and Providence, RI and then another one at the bottom of Massacussetts

  • @MrSuperAwesomes Also, the Acela cars tilt when going through corners allowing for less speed loss.

  • @MrSuperAwesomes because Amtrak worked with the respective commuter lines to put Acela in a time slot where other trains wont get in its way north of New Haven. Acelas slots are controlled differently. and the amfleet cars cant handle more than 135mph max. they are just to old.

  • High level platforms make moving oversized freight shipments an issue so they are not popular. That and the associated cost and new set of issues they create. Falling hazards most notably.

  • Why oh why does the US still not have high level platforms at nearly all of its stations?? Clambering up those steps just to get on the train seems maddness. Its only concrete guys.

  • @evantis121: Gotta save the concrete for building freeways! I do agree that high level platforms help make boarding and detraining faster and easier.

  • @evantis121 because our politicians all belong to the oil companies.. next question.

  • @evantis121 they are easier to get in the train with a high level platform especially those who are not able to walk up stairs

  • @evantis121 THe American with Disabilities Asoc. has made enuff noise that it is becoming manditory for platfroms for all trains that are wheel chair accesible

  • @evantis121 I believe it has something to do with the fact that at a higher-level platform, Superliner cars cannot be boarded.

  • @evantis121

    I don't get it either?

how would you get someone on a wheelchair up?

  • @evantis121 I have to agree, but at the same time, the flag stop feel to climbing up stairs to get on a train can't be matched. But yes, more cities need high level platforms. But then again, all the equipment out west use low level platforms.

  • @evantis121 Many of our long-distance trains in the US are double-decker and are designed for low-level platforms, however not on this route.

  • @WhatTheHeck5205 European double decker sets can be boarded from high level platforms. If the older carriages can conform to modern high level platforms, scrap 'em and get new ones which do. I hear alot of moaning about the black hole that is Amtrak from right wing politicians in the US. Here in the UK the government spends $8 Billion a year on maintaining its rail network and $50 billion on new infrastructure, look up HS2 and Cross Rail.

  • @evantis121 can you not climb up a few steps? geeze

  • @2204Alpha I can, but i'd doubt wheelchair users or old and infirm could . geeze

  • whats the cost of riding that train?

  • we'll never get high speed trains like europe and america in britain!

  • shave and a haircut!!

  • I like 0:32 :)

  • I am suprised and pleased Amtrak has not restricted this sort of photography yet I have been busted may times trying to shoots these damn things just sitting still in the depot in Washington Dc yes I know these are public stations but I wonder how much longer they will alow us photorpahers and videographers to do this sort of work

  • @gaycowboy31 You must be in a high population area, may want to go where the population is low, security is not all that bad.

  • now that is Sweet I really must try to make it up here when I do my east coast pickup in early October...I was on the Orient Express last year outside Paris France and they have windows that open I got blown away while standing at the window by something VERY Fast I was told it was TGV passin us while we were stoped not sure but I mentioned that because the new TGV is Identical to the Acela same bulder I understand they are awsome to see in Paris and unlike Amtrak you can go photograph them

  • It's a little fearful; there's almost no space between the yellow line and the edge of the platforn, so even if a person stays behind the yellow line there will be strong wind when acela express passes.

  • I thought that the Acela trainsets only had 6 passenger cars?

  • @ParkerLiberty: That's what I thought, too, until I saw that Acela #2159.

  • @cchan006 The 7th car is a test car. It's a track geometry car that works at 150MPH. It is not a revenue car and has no seating for passengers.

  • @cchan006 ya thats rare.thats the amtrak geometry car.they check the rails out.but it is still the normal acela with the extra car

  • @cchan006 The 7th car is the high speed track geometry car

  • @cchan006 i know that it rarely has 7 cars

  • @cchan006 One of those is cars is a track geometry car disguised as a passenger car.

  • @cchan006 The 7th car in the consist is a track diagnostics car.

  • @ParkerLiberty The cars are not articulated, they can remove or add cars as needed. Amtrak stated when they came online they COULD run with as many as 8 or 9 cars, after that the coaches become too heavy for the motors to handle them. In order to keep the time table on-time, they MUST travel at the max speed. Though the limit is 150MPH in areas, that is a FRA Limit, The Northeast Corridor could handle a little faster. Anf the motors are limited, but can go 152-153 before computer says WOAH!

  • @ParkerLiberty Car 7 isn't really a passenger car.

It's a track geometry/train performance measurement car. I'm not sure how familiar you are with the operations of the high speed network in Japan but they have entire trains designed specifically to measure and test the diagnostics of every aspect of the line.

  • 1:02 u must have been like: "oh sh*t!!"

  • this is the best quality of videos i've seen out of all the acela videos

  • Ahh the Acela Express is brilliant, the only thing we've got in England is the crappy Virgin Pendolino, which is one of the worst trains to ever grace Britain's railways.

  • I rode the Acela from Wilmington to Baltimore. Although the ride was a lot rougher than compared to similar trains on SNCF, ICE-DB, and TrenItalia's Eurostar, Amtrak is capable of running high speed rail in more locations if they put more money into track maintenance and newer train-sets, preferably the Siemens type from Germany.

  • @hoorider13 "They" is the taxpayer in the US. And a huge number of citizens in this country are just not up to putting money into what it would take to upgrade to faster trains. The cost is massive, and in many cases the passenger trains share the track with freights. I just don't it happening in the next decade or so in the US

  • Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this will be like my 6th time riding the acela its the best

  • Great shooting!

  • Ottimo video,un saluto dall'italia.

  • I wish they could run there max speed of 162mph

  • I grew up not far from the Kingston station in North Kingstown in the 1970s and 80s, and even back then the trains flew through doing about 70 because that stretch of track is so straight. They were still diesel locomotives back then, no electric lines over the tracks. The tracks were not far behind my house, we could hear the trains when they went by. A friend of mine lived not even 50 feet from the tracks, his whole house would shake when a train went by!

  • The Acela is AWESOME!!! It's smooth and fast. Simply the best way to travel!!

  • @MrAwesome1361 When I lived in US, I'd NEVER take Amcrap instead of the I-95 :)

  • @MrAwesome1361 My experience has been that, on the old Boston & Providence (north of Pawtucket), where the track & traffic lets the Acela sets really air it out, there is notable sustained vertical oscillation down below. Hard to tell if the source is the track or the trucks.

Quite often the "regional expresses" are just as fast, CT to Boston. Just a couple more stops. Once we had 2 7000 hp AEM-7 locos; Acela has 2 6000 hp power-cars at ends.

  • Thanks for staying safe on the platforms and ramps at Kingston Station, we appreciate it! Kingston Station received an special safety award last year from Operation Lifesaver for ten years of a perfect safety record with no fatalities or incidents. You are correct, the Acela Expresses ( 20 a day ) fly by this location doing the top speed of 150mph. This is the fastest train on our continent at the smallest state in the US.

  • cool, America needs more trains like this all over the country, its is very economical, safe, environment freindly, and yeah lots of fun with comfort.

    Go America Go

  • Great catch!!!

  • that first acela had 7 cars

  • That sign at the beginning should say, "Train approaching, stand behind the yellow line, or you will get owned."

  • I really can't wait to ride this train with my dad in the summer. Did yoou ride this? I heard it was amazing.

  • @trekkiegirl62: I rode it between Boston and Connecticut. The ride is fast and comfortable.

  • @trekkiegirl62 Perhaps just amazing in comparison with some of the other American trains, which I've heard aren't that great. Probably like comparing my HST sets to the Eurostar. One is adequate - the other is lovely!

  • no comparison to Japanese bullet trains.

  • two questions. where the heck were you standing when you filmed this? some platform in the middle of nowhere? and secondly, do people actualy ride this thing a lot?

  • On my first few clips, I was standing on the handicap access ramp. And yeah, Acelas are popular. Sometimes, they are standing room only.

  • they don't need sleepers because High speed train are built to reduce travel times so there won't be a need of having a sleeper cars, and all sleeper cars will eventially be taken out.

  • @creamyfilling102: The Acela Express is Amtrak's most popular train. It even makes a profit of $41 per passenger and is completely self-sustainable, almost always on time, and has never had a derailment.

  • @creamyfilling102 the Acela and Northeast Regional make up about 90% of Amtrak's revenue both are used heavily and quite frankly i think they need more.

  • thats the 7 car set rare catch

  • @LIRRFAN Yes!! An Acela with geometry car #10003 is a rare catch.

  • Is that a 7 car set?

  • Yeah, the first one is.

  • does the acela have a dining car? i'm on the west coast and the coastal starlight (north south) has some serious food (ACTUALLY COOKED ON THE TRAIN>>>smack the planes). and a sleeping car maybe? inquiring minds want to know.

  • There's a cafe car on the Acela, similar items to the lounge car cafe on the Coast Starlight. No sleepers.

  • you don't need sleepers cars for high speed train because there built to reduce travel time for traveler so they don't need a sleeper car, so all you need is a coach car business class car and a snack car.

  • how long did u stayed there for

  • I stayed there for about half a day. Had to head back to Boston.

  • That Train 2010 Is The Year Now?

  • The train platform looks small and narrow. Strange because most americans are really fat

  • Beautiful!!! I really like how you keep the rear Acela cabs in your viewfinder as you pan your shots. VERY nice!! 5 STARS!!

  • i Can't Wait till the whole NEC is 150 mph or 180?

  • I didnt know they have high speed train in US.

  • ur the stupidest guy ever the amtraks are the fastest trains in the us amtrak acela max speed 150 mph, amtrak reginoal max speed 135 mph, amtrak silver star metor 110 mph amtrak empire builder, auto train, sunset limted and new orleans are 90 mph limit mann ur slow!

  • The real high-speed trains are on the other side of the world. Japan has one that does 350 kmph (around 215 mph)
