Because he's human. Humans have the tendency to put all of their troubles onto one object, and in Shinn's case his focus of his troubles was the Freedom, not excatly Kira himself. Hell he didn't even know who Kira was until -after- the war. He saw his family killed by a blast from the freedom, then fast forward a few years, then his love life was shattered by the excat same mobile suit. My point you ask? Is that Shinn's not perfect, he's human like the rest of us. He's not Jesus Yamato.

His family dies when he's 14, and then he's sent packing off to a foreign nation away from everyone he's ever known? Somehow it seems more realistic that he's very, very emotionally imbalanced.

Basically, those who hate Shinn, Kira or any of the main characters usually hate all the SEED/CE series in general. Theylook at the drama form of the show and superficially tag it as "immature for kids" and express such opinion in order to feel better. To say it shortly, they have some sort of complex and by claiming that their "UC" or some other Gundam universe is "deeper" and "darker" and "ooh so realistic" they just try to elevate themselves.
I have nothing against the series themselves, though was rather sad that they didnt have completely original storylines, but I didnt like Shinn. I'm a Kira Yamato fan, so I guess my opinion is biased but Shinn's character was just disappointing to me :(

wellt he way i see it is this, shinn lost his family and became that little emo boy that wanted revenge and dwelled on the past, fell in love with a psycho bitch and then just hated the world after she died, shinn dwelled on the past...and then cried because he lost his final fight
kira on the other hand lost his home, a grip of his friends, never saw his family again, he also thought that he killed his best friend at one point, the thing is kira didnt dwell on it, life went on for him.

His family dies when he's 14, and then he's sent packing off to a foreign nation away from everyone he's ever known? Somehow it seems more realistic that he's very, very emotionally imbalanced.

"shin is only miserable misguided foul who only thinks about himself" that was my feelings about him till last episode. Even if he lost his family he had no right to treat Cagali like this. Well at least in the end he was able to realize how such a foul he was. For me the only person who could be called a god was Kira but as he said in last episode: "I am nothing more just a single human being" just simple as that.

Basically, those who hate Shinn, Kira or any of the main characters usually hate all the SEED/CE series in general. Theylook at the drama form of the show and superficially tag it as "immature for kids" and express such opinion in order to feel better. To say it shortly, they have some sort of complex and by claiming that their "UC" or some other Gundam universe is "deeper" and "darker" and "ooh so realistic" they just try to elevate themselves.

I have nothing against the series themselves, though was rather sad that they didnt have completely original storylines, but I didnt like Shinn. I'm a Kira Yamato fan, so I guess my opinion is biased but Shinn's character was just disappointing to me :(
