@youngfrusciante sounds like some digitech whammy usage, the fuzz factory, especially when he changed oscillation pitch by turning the volume off, thats definitely a fuzz factory, a delay is probably being used to create spurts of oscillation, it also sounds like he's using some sort of modulation, maybe a phaser or vibrato to create the really fast wobble sounds, and i can bet, as always, he's using his 16 second looper
@nymetsrock thanks, and great desciptions! at 5:14 the only thing i can think of that could possibly get that sound is the paul gilbert signature flanger with that crazy takeoff switch? :-D
@youngfrusciante i think thats the whammy, i own one and i can get the same sound when i set it to the harmony section oct up-oct down and go from the lower octave to higher octave i can get that rising up sort of sound, pretty sure its whammy usage
@nymetsrock amazing, i didn't realise you could do that with a digitech whammy, i've only ever played around with my friend's ones. thanks, i might have to look into getting one myself.. peace friend.
@j30345 I dont know, I love this piece sooo much, probably my favorite of all times and ive heard good covers before. Its jus really difficult to pull off and not everyone can do it. This isnt bad, i just didnt like it, thats all.
@Taligreen80 imo this is one of the better ones. not because it's accurate but because he plays like hes very experienced in guitar playing. any experienced guitar player will know what good playing is...you didn't like this because it just sucked but i think it was because his ,"style" it's just different from yours..maybe your just not accustomed to his style of playing...
@Taligreen80--It's Ok NOT to like this at all. I've heard worst renditions of Maggot Brain, this is bad though. Santana killed it, the vid's somewhere on YouTube. Michael "Kidd Funkadelic" Hampton kills it. But really, No one does it better than Eddie "Maggot Brain" Hazel himself
@JaimeOctober--To reply to my own comment, IF he just let HIS feeling take him away, the way the original is so emotionally overdriven, this could've been better. Where's the soul? P-Funk used to rag on Eddie "Smeero" Hazel, saying that when he plays guitar, it always sounds like he's crying. And yes, it is known that Smeero had some pain in his life.
@chalicewhisperer you know I would cuss you back out, then i took a look at your profile, seems like everyone else on youtube already did. Get a life, I bet my comment made your day, loser...
@Taligreen80 nah pulling my cock outta ya mums arse and watching her lick the shit off my knob made my day, by the way can you please talk in english your kinda hard to understand.
I'm sure he likes Fripp, but I don't really hear any Fripp imitation here. He reminds me more of Belew, if i had to choose between the two Crimson guitarists, but he's pretty unique.
I doubt he's using a Fulltone Tape Echo. There's a few videos of him giving pretty detailed tours of his pedalboard and he has no such pedal. From what I've heard about his preferences too I'd be a bit surprised if he'd use something so finnicky, expensive, difficult to maintain, etc.
What about Eddie Hazel? He was the lead guitarist on the original and is an awesome musician. Also, Eric Clapton has had a longer career, and to me better solos, than many of the people you mention. The most ignored guitarist to me though is Jeff Beck.
I've been revisiting (not that people care) the MERMEN's "A Glorious Lethal Euphoria" lately and Jim Thomas' playing has always impressed me, but the more I think about it, the more I wonder what him and Nels would sound like together, especially with Cline's Young meets Hendrix vibe in the Banyan setting. Thomas and Cline are both Westies... It could be pretty wicked...
Yes, my same thought exactly. Jim and Nels are both fantastic players with unique voices through their instruments. I've seen them both many times. I'll always hope that someday either or both will share the stage w/Neil Young in a guitar trade-off playing "Like A Hurricane". Or better still with Mike watt on bass and Kirk Kirkwood on guitar #4. If that ever happened, there's a chance the earth may spin out of orbit because of it... but it would be worth it.
dig this- Jim Thomas and Alan Whitmann from Mermen, Nels Cline, Henry Kaiser, and Weasel Walter are supposed to be putting out a release under the moniker Jazz Free! I can't wait to hear what that's gonna sound like.
That roster has a lot of promise, (for "Jazz Free") but sometimes an "all star" cast doesn't pan out at the end of the day. The weak link in the chain for me is Kaiser as a stylist. No question he's an important catalyst for such projects (Yo! Miles ROCKED!) but I never cared for his approach on guitar. He's a way talented guy, just not my cup of tea. Maybe being wedged between Nels and Jim will work. Looking forward to it! Thanks for the heads-up.
im a huge nels cline fan. ive become completely enamored with all of his work ever since i first heard him on austin city limits w/ wilco in '05
-that being said-
clapton is pretty gewd
i think its really stupid how people always seem to get into petty fights over who the better guitarist is, just sit back and listen. As long as someone is listening, anyone is a great musician. if youre not drawn to one person's playing, it doesnt mean they suck or that someone else is better

What a bunch of junk. Clapton said in his bio that music is the same now as it was then, 95% junk and 5% good. This definitely falls into the 95% bracket. I think a 5 year old with a sugar high old could make all that racket. Sounds like a teenager in the garage with a stomp box and his parents are not at home.
Well I think most of Clapton's stuff is junk, so fucking what? Why did you come in here and say that, do you think people care what you have to say? How is that quote relevant? Just cause it's from guitar god Eric Clapton? Nels Cline fucking cock-slaps Eric Clapton and hordes of all the other so-called "guitar gods".
you sir are fucking retarded. this is Maggot Brain. written by Eddie Hazel, and released by Funkadelic in 1971. This is a classic song.

oh yeah i had never thought of that, straight analog, mooger is coool only its expensive for the money of just the mf 105 i could build a nice super strat.

this is it. The best band. genre-less, all star, premium, bonus package madness.
bossudude420 2 years ago 4
how did he get that effect starting at 2:17?
pLiNg0 2 years ago
My guess is he is using a fulltone tube tape echo. when you screw around with the knobs you can gett crazy oscillations.
another person who uses one in a similar manner is Isaiah Mitchell from Earthless.
I may be wrong though...

I know he's using a Digitech Whammy in some parts, and I know he likes Fuzz Factories, which will oscillate like crazy.
