I understand the compulsion not to waste anything because you see a potential use for it. Sometimes people convince themselves that every object represents a memory, and they get overwhelmed with so much stuff that they give up. Trauma, extreme financial stress or the loss of a loved one can cause people to isolate themselves and/or become obsessed with hanging on to things that they were once comforted by or they were desperate for. They surround themselves with a cocoon of material things.
I love it how this guy describes his relationship with these objects. I understand him..but damn this is a problem. Think dust, black widows, and possibly rats....no girlfriend, no sex....umm ok time to clean up!!
That first fellow isn't a hoarder by definition. A hoarder has a hard time letting go of anything, not specific things. The correct term would be a bibliophile, which by definition means a person with a compulsion to amass books.
This film is very interesting! and the chap expresses himself very well too! I'm just wondering if he has read all the 6000 books? I'm a book lover/buyer too, but never seem to read as much as I think I should.
Thats true. I love collecting books too. But the space is a real pain. And i have vcr tapes too, but only family ones. Im thinking of transfer to save space and have copies for my familiy.
The first person is a collector. I don't see him as a hoarder.

Funny--if you have a stately home and a library, you're considered cultured and sophisticated. If you live in a flat, you have a disorder...
I guess it comes down to if it interferes with your everyday life.

An electronic book reader would not go a miss with this guy.

Much as I like books, they are a real space killer. Also this guy should really transfer his VCR tapes to DVD, and hard-drives etc.
