  • Just posted a tribute to Scott on my channel - he really is the best!

  • Ive been teaching and playing years and I know this stuff, but I love this lesson and how he puts it all across. Scott is a top player and a top top teacher. A wonderful video lesson, to be valued and treasured. There s alot more in all this than you may first realise. Brilliant.

  • The last few licks are SICK

  • This guy is good!

  • That's one guy who loves his guitar. He's not there just doing it for the money.

  • It's a real life giapet!

  • 06:37 Laser eyes!

    Road House....

  • Wow only mentions Jeff Beck once despite spending his whole life trying to emulate him,,,,THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE.

  • Scott is a very innovative and underrated player. The way he puts a fresh spin on the same old bluesy pentatonic licks is quite interesting.

  • Wow, great video!!

  • Was just about to post something when he mentioned Jeff Beck FEEYOO (wipes forhead with palm)

  • this dude is amazing. first the flex capacitor and now this

  • GREAT!

  • Love it, just another step to hurdle in my conquest of the AXE, thanks Scott H..

  • who cares about someones hair, the player is what matters

    thx for the tips!!!!!!

  • Great guy!

  • Thanks! Great lesson. Mr Henderson seems like a nice fellow too, not egotistical at all. You know guitar players...

  • Doesn't he look a little like Geoffrey Rush?

  • definitely a different style. great guitar also

  • his pick practically makes no noise.......I wonder what he uses?

  • I learned a bunch by watching this! Thanks for sharing

  • wow! How did I not know this???

  • Fantastic player...but did he leave the cover on his amp?

  • I would seriously expect this guy to be playing metal thrash in a basement, but he is a world class player!! Don't go by hairstyles...

  • It's always nice to listen to a different perspective on an approach to the guitar. This was especially cogent and concise. Given the brief time allotted, there is much information to be gone over and considered.

Well, kids, back to the woodshed.

  • @toetapper04 Back indeed. I'll send up smoke signals from my shed when I'm done. This was fantastic. Great new territory to explore I'd never thought of with the Maj2nd up, and 5th position changes. More please! Oh, and @contact1araya—it's probably his thick fusion tone, without a lot of hi-end, and that he uses his fingers a bunch.

  • He sounds a lot like John McLaughlin.

  • My total Respect to the MASTER!!

  • I think it's great that Scott is taking the time to break things down like this. Nothing egomaniacal about it like "can't touch this" licks (ala so many other guitarists). Giving a little theory, technique, and feel all at the same time, allowing inexperienced guitarists to understand how simple things can be made to sound tasteful and great as you develop your dexterity and knowledge of the fretboard.

  • Scott rules!!

  • his eyes do some trippy shit at 6:39 but his playing is absolutely awesome poor guitar is getting a beating... LOL

  • Scott has amazing tone and is so sharp...great fun to watch & listen to; thanks for the post!

  • 13:32 ... now how the fuck does he do that! my favorite guitar player by far.

  • This video has refreshed my playing better than a chord or scales book........

  • I love the 7/4 idea. It really adds alot of flavor to your solo and can make is all sound so unique.

  • The guy is crazy! he can just improvise for hours and sounds perfect !!!! : ))))

  • The closest I've ever heard to a guitar sounding like a saxophone.

  • Scott, you the man

  • It's simple A major pentatonic, D major pentatonic and E major pentatonic (1-4-5) you can use it also in A major blues

  • I think Scott is having a bad hair day.

  • Great tone and playing as always. Is that Suhr a chambered model? Sounds like it......

  • Awesome! Thank you Igor.

  • Einstein of guitar.

  • That first lick of the outro solo had me buggin out...omg!

  • 13 people think the know everything!!!

  • it's not secrets of pentatonic scale, Scott's playing is secrets of musicality.

  • I don't even play guitar but these guys make it sound so easy (especially the Director - he's great he fills in where Scott leaves off, for novices for me to understand).

    Great job guys

  • I would love to play guitar but even though I don't I really enjoyed that lesson.

  • Who snaps with their ring finger!?

  • Is that a pick or a quarter?

  • This guy is the encyclopedia.

  • LOL at 0:49 Scott's eyes

  • Scot Henderson baffles me; by his rare brilliance in songs like Dolemite or Tore down House yet in many instances he uses tones that sound sort of kitschy often in demo situations...a apparent paradox...but I have to agree that he is probably the most talented fusion guitarist in the world:) The tone he gets out of his Strat on tore down house is pure genius!

  • @turockandar his guitar is suhr, not strat

  • thank u jeff beck

  • he looks like angus young he,s a awesome player but dammm his hair needs 2 get fixe sorry my mom works in a hair cutt schop

  • came here because greg liked it.. quite cool!

  • Jeff Beck and Eric Johnson couldn't make it so we got his sound stunt double.

  • Great guitarist - but what's gonna happen when his looks are gone?

  • Awesome! Thanks for sharing!

  • 06:30 Ace Frehley !

  • I wonder what the world would look like if Henderson had as many fans as Michael Jackson or Britney Spears ?

It would have been heaven I guess.

Sometimes I wonder what would have happend if I totally missed this cat and his music.

    Thank GOD I didn't

  • Funny how some of the simple things you do on the instrument become much more profound when explained by a true master!

  • Best guitar tone I've heard in a while.

  • Radiohead plays 7/8 over 4/4 on 2+2=5. It sounds great.

  • This is such awesome teaching. Really good. He breaks it down to an understandable level and gives us direction. Now, practice practice practiced.

  • grrtt4

  • Wow the light just came on! Great video for those of us that don't know theory!

  • Your a genius dude !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Your a genius dude !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • tasty

  • Does he also give hairstyling tips?

  • Holy fuck i saw this guy live in manila!!

  • great video

  • Me partió la psiquis este video!

  • Mister Scott Henderson I love you

  • For someone who played with such incredibly soul as in Torn down house I had real difficulty in understanding the kitsch sounds he often demos with...he is probably the best blues fusion guitarist alive.

  • wow, this is utterly incredible, how comes I didn't find this before??

  • @metalrhoads Thats what happen when people don't study Music theory!

  • so what Scott has mounted on his guitar is a some sorta miniaturized "Floyd Rose"? since he said he can bend the G up a maj 3rd...which is an hella scoop

  • First time I heard Scott I just loved what he was playing, it was Tribal Tech "Spears" 1985, them I start follow every single track and note, I was lucky cause I met him in Brazil and chat a little bit couple times, unfortunately my English at the time was pretty bad. I'm still convicted that Scott is one of most creative guitarists ever. Very sensitive and makes you never feel boring, that's a wonderful skill! Scott you jazz- rock man!

  • Great Scott!

  • Jazz Rock ?

  • 13:33, just crazy !!!

  • Exellent ! Henderson is just as great as a teacher as he is a musician ! Thanks for uploading.

  • It reminds me so much to that old instructional video where he plays the blue ibanez...

  • Scott puts so much feel into his playing. It comes across as a lot more than just technique, its like he is pouring his heart and soul out into and through the instrument. That's the issue I have with a lot of the "shredder" crowd - with them its just ultra fast execution of patterns and scale shapes. They just master those shapes and spit them out automatically. It can sound impressive but lacks the depth of nuance and subtlety that a player like Scott or Gambale brings to the art.

  • @jjmatashi You are right on the money manny people can play fast no manny people a can have a tasteful and a soulful playing!

  • I wish every guitar lesson on YouTube was as good as this one.

  • @Twanger73 you're joking right? don't you know who he is?

  • how about a G# minor pentatonic shape? It contains all those notes plus a sharp 11th to give a little lydian flavour...

  • @axmanshane i just embarked on that discovery as well. it really does give you a nice lydian sound. its just like going a whole step above "A" major pentatonic which is f# minor pentatonic, like scott henderson says in the vid. Love this stuff

  • i love Scott Henderson, his so crazy!

  • This video is really awesome, so I shared it on twitterDOTcomSLASHstudyguitar

  • Great video! And thanks for the clarifying comments, Jude--that really helped!

  • Great video! And thanks for the clarifying comments, Jude--the really helped!

  • pretty searching quality

  • Scott is an amazing talent , with a beautiful touch and musicality . and great tone . I would like to hear him play some jazz standards with that type of tone and technique , Cherokee , Donna Lee , Giant Steps , Milestones , In Walked Bud .... that would be really cool , although it all sounds cool to me .

  • Take that shape and move it up a third -- that'll take the paint off the ceiling :D Oh and personally, I like 5 over 4.

Thanks for the video. Enjoyed the part about the tremolo bar, good stuff!

  • Take that shape and move it up a third -- that'll take the paint of the ceiling :D Oh and personally, I like 5 over 4.

  • really helped!

  • This is great stuff man!

  • Genious!

  • very inspiring, thanks!

  • This is more rhythmic stuff but its really good.

  • He's playing modes, doesn't he? Like, the Bm pentatonic starts on the 7th fret. When he moves to C# (9th fret), he's actually playing the Dorian mode. C# Dorian mode. Is that right?

  • @nintyceo1 B is dorian and C# is phrygian and F# would be aeolian, remember he's in the key of A major.

  • @nintyceo1 Hi, if you want to look it that way, he is actually playing pentatonics that, if completed with the correspondent two extra notes (which Scott does to give flavour), would turn effectively into the following modes (heptatonic scales): B dorian, C# phrygian and F# Aeolian. All of this modes share the same notes. Hope this makes it clearer.

  • Salute!!!!!!!

  • sorry ..I'll do it here lol

  • this was the most use full lesson =p

  • Jeff beck does the same technique with the tremolo, very nice sounding lick

  • Great Scott !! To the future, Marty!!

    Awesome upload. Guy's a GOD

  • i love scott henderson. i cant belive i didnt know this stuff before

  • Recently saw and got to hang a little with Scott here in Manila and he really burned at the gig..phenomenal musician, can't wait for his next Asian tour..Keep on burning Scott!! Thanks for a great Show..P.I. Jazz

  • that is mind-blowing. lol sorry i'm a noob XD

  • Hands down, Scott is the best video instructor. His 2nd video should be required viewing of all guitarist from ALL STYLES. He phrases like a horn player, and that makes him incredibly melodic for a guitarist....I have one criticism of Scott: the hair. It's time for him to cut it. It makes him look 70....

  • scott henderson

    sem comentarios mto bom !!

  • it's a good resource when you understand that he uses the same shape in the scales degrees that produces a minor chord, specifically 2nd, 3rd and 6th... basically a dorian, phrygian and aeolean mode in the licks... thanks Mr. Henderson

  • @gustavojcd0501 I'm afraid not because there are no flat thirds...flat 6's or flat 9ths:The Bminor shape contains 9-11-5-13-R-the F#shape has a 13-R-9-3-5 and the C#shape has 3-5-13-7-9

  • that's pretty much what I already do, but this helped me put it into perspective and now i'll experiment with differen't rhythms.

  • great scott!

  • I watched the Video! And now I'm going to analyze and learn from it! :D Thumb me up for no reason!

  • You can tell he knows what he's talking about, pretty interesting.

  • Mutant.

  • Isn't this essentially dorian mode?

  • Scott is the best! Thanks for posting...

  • @woodcoxh what he means by deriving the B minor pentatonic from the A major scale is that you can get the same notes that build the B minor pentatonic from both A major and D major

    D Major: (D) (E) (F#) G (A) (B) C#

    A Major: (A) (B) C# (D) (E) (F#) G#

The difference in using the 2 scales is nothing unless you were to introduce other tones (e.g. 6th) In the case of the 6th using B as the bass note in both, it would be a minor 6th in D major (G natural) which gives a more natural minor sound

  • to me its almost disrespectfull to use the bar like that and not mention jeff beck,..............sorry but thas fucked up, you KNOW where scott got that shit from,....................

  • @vetmusician he does say it's like Jeff Beck at 10:10

  • @vetmusician he does mention jeff beck

  • damnn he sounded like a sax 6:00 ish

  • @lambgtr7 yup, i would walk down the halls thinking someone was playing a sax but it was always just scott teaching his open counseling. so rad.

  • it's all about modes guys...nothing new, but these are things to understand and apply with intelligence.

  • @danlovesnan this has nothing to do with modal playing at all.

  • @danlovesnan What do you mean by mode? im such a beginner

  • @danlovesnan agreed. It's just minor, dorian and phrygian, but he's kind of simplifying it a bit.

  • Very educational. Many thanks.

  • I like the idea of moving pentatonic shapes to get different sounds. BUT...the b minor pentatonic is derived from the D Major scale NOT the A Major scale.

    b minor pentatonic = b d e f# a

    D Major pentatonic = d e f# a b

    A Major pentatonic = a b c# e f#

Which one seems correct to you?

Try this scale form from the root and move chromatically to the octave. Analize how they relate to the root.

Some are more "inside" and some are more "outside"

    No disrespect to the player...

  • @woodcoxh

he is creating a dorian sound

  • @woodcoxh A Major makes everything in B Dorian. Besides, which is more "correct?" Well, judging by how good he sounds, phrasing AND note choices... His seems more correct.

  • @woodcoxh he's talking about A major, which contains minor modes in B C# and F#. In this case he's thinking B dorian. But you're right, the natural minor in B = D major.

  • @woodcoxh I think the modal system to use as reference.

II minor (dorian mode) ----> becomes a pentatonic

III minor (Phrygian mode) -----> becomes a pentatonic

VI minor (aeolian mode) -----> becomes a pentatonic

playing a pentatonic sound is only 5 sounds and these definitely will be part of the shade considered

excuse my English, I used the Google translator

  • thanks scott :)

  • His movements remind me of Ted Greene, all spastic.

  • that backing track is so righteous!

  • So according to what he says at 12:10 Gibson Les Paul's aren't good and won't stay in tune...

  • @asgerms Nope, that's not what he said. But if you had a Fender-type vibrato arm on a Les Paul (or any other guitar for that matter) and you were giving it whammy abuse like Scott, then you might have a problem staying in tune depending on the angle of the strings over the nut....

  • This one lesson has opened up a whole new Vista in my Geetar playin!

  • sounds very sax

  • @roccckkerrr yeah i was thinkin the same. it's really amazing how he can make his guitar sound like a sax

  • Beautiful way of phrasing and he has such control over each note - sounds more like a sax player than a guitarist much of the time...

  • Sooo is he playing in A major?? or B minor.

  • God, and I thought I fingered my frets hard!

  • Simple, but this lesson has unlocked something on the neck for improvising, pure genius. Lets have more simple lessons that unlock the neck . Thanks Scott your are a genius. I watched you in Manchester England and that was a real blast.

  • This is fucking awesome.

  • Eureka!

  • Very Jeff Beck type tone.

  • AWSOME VIDEO !!! THANKS MATE !!

  • when he started string slipping it got way better.

  • This goes to 11...

  • this is crazy, i love scott henderson! almost saw him live but the concert was cancelled... bummer

  • muy bueno.

  • 6:26 "Here's an interesting lick." *plays cliche blues lick"

  • @ShredST obviously you didn´t watch the video carefully: it´s not about the notes, it´s the rhythm structure that makes it unusual.

  • @ShredST i think that by "interesting" he meant that it was superimposing 7/8 against 4/4.

  • @ShredST Are U at all aware of Scotts Blues recordings? I suggest U start with "Tore Down House" and see if U spot a "Cliche Blues Lick"

  • Now on my rotating PLAY List FOREVER. (I share Scott's name and Scott was born one month after me. I was born same month as Al Di Meola. If only I could play HALF as well as either~! :-) )

  • Can I download the backing track ?

  • @iRawk big "Duh!" for me. Watched again and saw your name at beginning. Being an avid GP reader, I should have known. Sorry Jude. Could swear I read in GP or Ac Guit that Train's Hotchkiss and Stafford graduated GIT, one of them top of class.

  • He needs to eat a sandwich! Great guitarist however!!!

  • thanks for putting this up, liked and added to my favorites!

  • Scott reminds me mad proffesor from Back to the future somehow :)

  • thanks Scott, learned a lot in just a few minutes. the whole thing was great but the tips at the end about the guitar set up are gems. (bridge holes, string line, graphite on the nut)

  • OMG, how can anyone not enjoy this?! this modal/vamp jam that opens this just made my day!
