I remember watching the race I was with my dad because Its the Daytona 500. I remember his face when the crash happened. He knew something bad happened, That night we were watching ESPN waiting for the news and it came on and you would have though my eyes were a hose.
I still remember the 500. I was 8. I didn't cry when I heard the news. I feel bad about it, thinking back on it. I guess I didn't want to believe it.
Then I watched the next race, and there was no #3. That's when it hit me. He was really gone.
That year was so emotional. Mickey's 500 win, and the news of Dale's death. Park's win a week later. Harvick's win just 2 races later. And Jr's 400 victory.
They all helped to heal the wounds, but the scars still remain.
@marydee658 My mother said the same thing. She hated Dale, but ever since he passed she had no interest in waching it. She said all the fun was gone after that.
its crazy how i didnt know dale but all of us nascar fans had a tear in our eye that day. this sport is a passion to all of us,not just the drivers and if dale were here today nascar would be a lot different. RIP dale, one day i'll get to be up there and race on that big track in the sky and trade some paint
wow feels like just yesterday all this went down and now almost 10 years later SAFER barriers the COT wow wonder wats in store 4 the future R.I.P dale we all miss u
i havent felt the same about racing since dale died. its no longer a mythological mystique of danger and speed now its just guys in cars to me. dale was that mystique
@cnycarnut i do agree with you... my dad use to look forward to the race on sunday afternoons now that dale is gone hes not that into it anymore so when dale sr died nascar did too. i miss him.

The very first line of lyrics are true for all us NASCAR fans after that Daytona 500...
Well I just heard / The news today / Seems my life / Is gonna change...
Its been over 8 years but its been 8 years where NASCAR hasn't been the same. R.I.P. Earnhardt
