@jonymush no-one knows anything about the royal guard (movies don't count) Ichigo's dad could have been a regular captain or he could have been the soul king himself. Speculation wont get you anywhere with bleach. Kubo comes up with storylines and changes them while writing it. He might have wanted ichigo to be soul king by this point but went "naaaah"

Yes there is a zero squad. Zero squad is where captains can graduate to, if you read the turn back the pendulum arc it tells you the twelfth division's captain before Urahara went to the Zero Division.
