Phew! - I've done that a few times with tractors and statinary engines.
You kinda get to know the swing and it's not so much brute force,( only at first when you're getting used to a different machine). Some of them kick back nasty andcan hurt. That's usually when the starting handle is used on the tinwork to teach it a lesson :)
This is after the winter season. Normally it starts in 1 or 2 go's. It wouldn't be nececary to add a startingaid...More importantly: the loco is original. Building things on to it would not be authentic. It is after all a hand started loco...
And if I imagine that this had to do some men in the past when this mashine was regularly used... they had to be muscle-bound!:-)D........ And I was sometimes saying how difficult is to start a mower after winter... I take it back...:-D But cool vid, surly!
Sometimes those diesel can be stubborn monsters and you have to get it just right. NIce video and also nice engine and it looks well kept.

cant u use a impact wrench 2 start the engine?
A10tankkiller93 2 years ago
I don't think it would spin it fast enough. plus the compression would slow it way down once you engage the compression lever.

i never crank started something so u r most likely right.

have you ever attempted to make a pneumatic starter see if u can make a handle that will go on an impact wrench saves the arms!!
199854a 2 years ago
an impact wrench would be damaging - the gears would be shot in about 5 revs.
mpwelk 2 years ago
true but it was the only thing i could think of that has enough torque
