  • PLZ don't give this technology to the physical 'circuit benders!' they will get lost in deep space of the universe of unexplored sounds!.. ; )

ideally,i'd love to have this on a new imac pro with the hi res large screen, bootcamp, for both win7 and leapard OS, as well as Ubuntu, and crossplatform share folders. atleast 12-32 but, I think u can get 64gig ram now too,..and programs: avid studio, sony vegas, reason, komplete8, logicpro, protools,..all in my arsonal: hey, i can atleast dream. : )

  • so i have to buy recycle if i want dr octo rex to work with my large collection of wav? or is there a better way to use wav and loop them...i heard its one at A TIME :/ ...i know why it is but still :P

so is there another tool i could use?

  • I love every Reason video. Reason is awesome.!!!!

  • Where is the horns in reason 6 ?

  • JUST TO LET EVERYONE KNOW! I was scratching my head with this one for almost an hour...

RIGHT CLICK ON THE DR. OCTO REX IN THE SEQUENCER AND SELECT: CREATE PATTERN/LOOP LANE... and DRAW THE LOOPS IN THERE. I was wondering why my pattern/loops were BLANK for the longest time, and only playing the preselected patter on the OctoRex itself... Wish this was explained in the tutorial... I could have spent 1 more hour jamming out wicked sweet CHUNES.. Hahaha, no big deal though. ITS SO FUN!!

  • How do you get that wood look surrounding the racks in reason? Or is that a record thing?

  • @pitolove71 It's a Reason 6 thing now. It was in Record but it's all in Reason 6 as part of the recent update.

  • In Reason 6, will I be able to record and create my own Dr.Rex samples within Reason?

  • This is why I've been a fan of Reason and using it for 9 years. Keeps getting better and better.

  • Question...at 5:09 you had several pattern/loop lanes, how did you create more than one pattern/loop lane? I would like to load up 8 different loops, but perhaps play loop one and trigger loop 2 before loop one ends...which would be easy if you could just tell me how you managed to have more than one pattern/loop lane.

  • very nice upgrade of an already amazing tool, nice work gonna have fun with this.

  • When will Propellerhead finally put beat-slicing in Reason? It's a bit silly you still have to use ReCycle for that.

  • Where can I get more musical loops for Rex? Like the

ph_com_128_summer3_GM rx2 one in the tutorial video that comes with Reason 5. I can only find drum beats and somewhat musical hip-hop stuff.

  • Dr. Octagon probably used this system for his music :O (Don't know who he is? Just ask)

  • Can you do Time Stretching in the Octo Rex?

  • Octorex is not for simultaneous loop playback but rather for switching between groups of loops. If you want 2 loops at the same time you can just creat another octorex... And drop them both in a combinator with a line mixer if you want to switch them both from a pad controller or keyboard simultaneously. Thanks for asking!

  • i cannot figure out how to have 2 loops playing at the same time, some help please?

  • 2:42 It's pronounced "red rum"?

  • @bennymcfarlane Officially, it's pronounced Red rum. It's named after The Shining. But just about everybody I know - myself included - says Reeedrum. It's kinda like how Moog is pronounced "Moag." :) /ryan

  • @PropellerheadSW That's scary.

  • It's at least a better name than the "All kick and no snare makes Jack a dull beat". :-P

(You'll understand if you've seen The Shining)

  • @PropellerheadSW I'm a King fan actually, and that made me laugh. Thanks.

  • @PropellerheadSW I kinda thought it was called reeedrum because of reeeson, reeewire, reeecycle, and so on. but by the way. I control it with logic. and a controller. how can i get sample one and two in octorex to be triggerred from the same octave on my controller, so that my logic region has both loops in it.

  • @PropellerheadSW - it's good for everything it DOES DO... just I would have expected it to be more powerful- a stereo output for each loop and the ability to manipulate and save different settings for each loop - i.e. different filter/envelope/osc settings etc, instead of them being global for all loops - THAT would have been more time saving for me and more useful in addition to all of the new features, but I do like the slice output and midi edit mode - much welcomed

  • NO MUTLIPLE OUTS IT'S F*IN USELESS...WHY ? I STILL HAVE TO USE MULTIPLE DEVICES FOR DIFFERENT LOOPS SINCE I CAN'T SAVE SETTINGS FOR EACH LOOP/ PROCESS THEM,, LIKE WTF PROPELLERHEAD!?

  • Comment removed

  • SO BASICALLY IT'S ONLY USEFUL IF I HAVE MULTIPLE EDITS OF THE SAME LOOP AND DON'T NEED TO TWEAK ANYTHING - I DONT GET IT

  • @oli2808 No, it's useful if you have any type of loops... of any variety, similar or not. In fact, so long as you have more than one loop in your life, it's useful. Switching loops on the fly with Octorex and even assigning Rex loops to pads is a very creative way to juggle loops around in Reason. And the Slice edit mode is a whole other beast in terms of tweaking your loops up into completely new sonic textures. As for the save settings thing, I don't know what you mean. Sorry.

  • @oli2808 If you could have more than one pattern/note lane per Dr Octorex then it would make sense to have 8 loops inside of it. However, if you can only trigger one loop at a time, then Dr Octorex isn't multi timbral and in fact (as you put it) kinda useless. I can put eight rex files inside of it, but I can't play them simultaneously. This is kind of a waste. Hello Propellerhead!!!!

  • @madahda It would have taken less time to create a 2nd octorex than write your message!

  • WTF WHY CAN'T YOU SEND MULTIPLE OUTS? FUCKIN CRAP SHITE!

  • Thanks for the fast comment.

Well, it's a little weird. My redrum computer works perfectly, but due to that, all my other instruments refuse to play a sound. When I open a new reason project, all the instruments work fine though... I think I'll just do my drums again with Kong ;)

    Thanks for the help anyways!

    Cheers

  • I have a problem..

I've seen a lot of tutorials now about Dr. Octo Rex and I even searched it on google, but I don't know why it gives completely NO sound

I can see the volumes parameters moving, so reason really plays the sounds I put in Dr. Octo Rex, but I can't hear them, even when I copy them to my track. I'm really getting desperate right now, because I really want to use this awesome loop player...

  • @BramnBass Are you getting sounds from the other devices in Reason and just NOT Octorex? First places to check would be to see if you're audio driver is selected in the preferences. Is your sound card using an ASIO driver? if not, you can likely use ASIO4ALL (assuming you're in Windows) If you're getting sounds from other devices but nothing from octorex, then press the tab key to flip the rack around and make sure there are cables wired from the main output to your mixer.

  • wax on wax off wax on wax off lol too funny

  • 1:46 "...And they'll be LOADED into separate SLUTS..."

Is it only me, or are these tutorials getting better and better?

  • Is the 'Record' at 5:43?

  • @Vlad3000 Yes that's the pro 'SSL' modeled mixer in Record.

  • thanxs alot mate.fuk this program is full on

  • how do i put 8 loops on each slot and record them in a sequence

  • @MrDisekt You can load all eight slots (or less) by shift clicking multiple loops in the file browser or by folding down the lower half of the Octorex and clicking each slot's button and then loading a loop manually with the folder browse button. Once it's loaded, right click on the Octorex and choose "Create Pattern Lane" from the context menu. Now you can draw in patterns with the pencil tool in the sequencer from 1-8 sequentially.

  • @PropellerheadSW Hey I need some help uhmm I am using reason 4 and im buying record and reason 5 is the reason 4 file format of the songs playable in reason 5 sorry if my english is bad...

  • @lauras43 Reason 5 is fully backwards compatible to version 1. Your 4.0 files will open perfectly. :)

  • One question... In your video when you hit play on the loop you can see the different slices being highlighted one by one as it plays across the loop... How do iI do this????

  • @revolv909 Click the little square button that says "SELECT SLICE BY MIDI." It's on the top row of the fold-down section of OctoRex.

  • @PropellerheadSW

That easy huh!!! HAHA.. nice one man!! :D

  • how do i trigger a slice with whatever midi controller and make make it play the whole slice without me sustaining the note on the controller? is this possible? or will i need to load my samples into kong drum designer to do this?

  • a little short but really useful tutoriall! thanks!

  • dis video is silly

  • decent, simple tutorial video. but, personally, i could do without the (attempted) comedic interludes. kthx.

  • I love the prop heads videos, very informative and funny at the same time! oH yeah, the programs rock too!

  • check out my video murda season to give u an idea of what I was tryna do with that octorex.. In the first bar u can hear him say "lets stay together" - i was tryna use the 1st half of the 1st bar and the 2nd half of the 2nd bar to make one loop, which i ended up doin in a different program. can u do this with nurse nano ?

  • @BZdaKritta Nurse rex could do it but so could Octorex actually. If you're sequencing this stuff you can play individual slices on octorex via the sequencer lane. Youtube comments limit length so here's short instructions. Set loop markers to the length of your loops (1 bar, for example), select loop 1, right click and choose "Copy pattern to sequencer", make new lane, click loop 2, same right click, edit both sequence regions to cut out part one's end and part two's start. Voila!

  • oh thnx 4 the advice. ill check it out the nurse nano tutorial (never used it before either) - I actually got the octorex working for how I was tryna chop the slices though. It automatically assigned slices to my pads on my axiom 25 / I just wanted to change the oder of which pads certain slices were assinged to. I just had to cut my loops up a little different ( i just used sony acid for that) and use 2 octorex's not quite what i was tryna do but it was just an experiment - Im real new to this.

  • Maybe someone here can help me - If I load a 2 bar loop into octorex. How do I assign slices to one of the 8 slots ? thnx 2 any1 that can help plz.

  • @BZdaKritta That's not how Octorex Works. You don't load a master loop and then break slices up into the slots. You load entire loops in each of the slots. So for drums one slot would be a basic beat, another a fill, another a breakdown, another a doubletime feel, etc. If you want to trigger slices or groups of slices in REX files I would highly recommend using the NurseNano module in the Kong Drum Designer. Check out our micro tutorial on it: youtube.com/watch?v=1NsZ3mbBGsU

  • somebody needs to hurry up and make that advanced tutorial cause Im all fucked up with recycle and octorex. never used reason before 5. I need some serious help tryna chop up these ol skool joints. I got it in my head but these programs just fuck my mode up lol. somebody help plz.

  • It's not that complicated. A lot of devices in Reason can be as simple or as deep as you want to make them. They're easy to start using and getting results but you can push them far as you understand them better. You'll do great. Don't worry. :)

  • This looks complicating. I'm getting in a few weeks. Looks like I'm going to have to play around with it a lot, lol. Any tips? Or is it easier than it looks? Lol.

  • Reason is Awesome!

    Check This:

    Myspace - loganscream

    Facebook - Logan Metal

  • dude you killed it (doctor octo quantize live switching single slice output capable editable manageable decay pitch adjustable reverseable super duper rex loop jam station) they should listen to you more that would've been the perfect name for the device it woul've drawn even more attention to others, nah but really that was funny haha, loving OctoRex, R5 and Record are what I turn to when I'm out of Ideas, I'd love to have some more specific details about the emulated mixer in record though

  • bravo...

  • Thanks for this! :)

  • aaaaaah just bought reason 5:( but on dr octo rex you can load up drums and an instruments and play them at the same time? and that reverse option , its doesnt work for me, i high light it and go slice edit mode, and select reverse, but it doesnt:( helllp plaease

  • wax on... wax off ???? jajajaj

  • so you can play more than 1 .rex loop in the same dr octorex at the same time?

  • "load up to 8 REX loops into a single player but it's so much more than that. "

dont need more... the 8 loops thing is more than enough to me...

i have like 6-10 rex loops in every project that make it look cluttered !!!

    :D Hurray !!!

  • thumbs up if we are all going to have some fun with this one :X

  • I know that the folks at Propellerhead read these comments so here it is. Octo rex should also be replacing recycle in the first place. Now with a live sampler built into reason/record, we should be able to import an audio file directly into reason and chop it up in Dr Octo Rex without Recycle. Why you guys didn't do this is beyond me

  • @YungHoodz $250 software completion fee

  • @YungHoodz mo money fo them....im glad i already have recycle and love it .get audicity also to take out crackling from record sampling.

  • @YungHoodz I'm pretty sure that they'll do this in the future. maybe they didn't do it this time because otherwise there would've been no more need for a 'reason 6' :D

  • How about being able to move the transients/slices to different time points? Come on Propellerheads, you could've given Ableton a run for it's money.

  • The voiceover guy is soooooo funny

  • Reason changed so much from v 1.0 It is hard to follow if you ar not only a "Reasoner" but I like this Music production DAW masterpiece!

  • This means I will be looking at this with the same awe I saw Thor with? Goodness. I hope I'll be able to look at it and go "OK, I think I can make it work."

  • Ha Ha you have creative control over every slice in dr.octo. Oh wait you just cant adjust the start and end points of the slice....... how LAME!!!!!

  • @rewtsone

lol, come on, Dr Rex never was an editing tool ! you are just mean for free.

  • @rewtsone thats what the software recycle is for buddy, you are supposed to set your start and end points in recycle when your CREATING THE REX FILE IN THE FIRST PLACE!! DUHH!!! this unit is for editing REX FILES that you have already created in RECYCLE! did yu eat a bowl of stupid for breakfast?

  • @rewtsone ps. if they made it so you could do ur own slices with the octorex player that would make the software RECYCLE pointless and hold no value, so that would mean theyve made a product they cant sell, if you owned a shirt manufacturing company and an embroiding company and started doing embroiding for free youd cancel out one of your incomes and reduce your profits (in business thats a retarded thing to do) also every music store trying to sell recycle would be PISSED!

  • @rewtsone

you can do it just trigger it when you need it and record it into the sequencer...

  • how come i didn't see this video come out? it never showed up on the front page

Subscriptions updates, weird...well i like the possibilities with Octo but not so much with Rex. maybe y'all will come out with a OctoWav one day. better yet maybe when we sample with the new sampling button for all the samplers, instead of that edit window that will come with that... let's just make it a Recycle window. (with drag and drop option...think fl studio) one day y'all will be the best DAW

  • @7thcity if you own the software Recycle it IS an OctoWav. LOL dont be lazy, chuck ur Wav. files into Recycle, slice them, then put them in the OctoRex and off you go. mission complete!

  • can't wait to see the tutorial on using a midi controller to trigger the multiple rex files. I am sure I will lose a day due to inspiration. I often find that I come up with better ideas when just playing Reason. Once the record button is engaged, I lose a little looseness to my feel. Sometimes I run a DAT or audio cassette to capture and sample later. Keep it coming guys!

  • this is awesome.. are there plans to integrate recycle in to reason/record in the future so I can bounce clips or loops to octorex?

  • @strkmusic wrong

  • @PropellerheadSW LOL!!!! EPIC FAIL from strkmusic...reason 5 is dope!!! Just bought it yesterday and man lots of changes from 4 im lovin it!!!!!!!!

  • @PropellerheadSW why even reply...you're just feeding the trolls.

  • still you can't move the slices and depend on a software like recycle...c'mon it's 2010

  • Great new features, but I still find myself unable to use left-to-right sequencer after switching to live. lol

  • i can hardly wait

i feel like a new dawn of music making is on its way

  • lol reason works like an optigan now ^^ or an arranger synth with real sound. it's work cool but to be honest i love the live sampling feature and kong much more ^^

  • cool reason 5.
