This song was made me loose all respect for Cash. This song is like waaaaaaaaay to emo. This is proabably the kind of song suicidal butch lesbians listen too.
I like Johnny Cash was never a BIG fan. Heard this last night for the first time. Now know it was a N.I.N song. But this is ia brilliant version. Totally agree with NickHarford. Even picked up the chords to play it myself. Thankyou N.I.N and thankyou Johnny Cash for letting us feel this.
In an entertainment world where wealth, popularity, and looks seem to outvalue talent and creativity, things like this remind us of the small amount of time we have here, and what we choose to do with it. This video and song just seem to cut through all the hype generated by the music industry in one simple stroke. It's the most moving video I've seen.. Everyone should see this once.
i woulda loved the opportunity to see this man in concert my friends ask me why i listen to johnny cash i just tell them hes legend enough said he is hte god of music
"Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps... Wow. [...] I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning — different, but every bit as pure." ~ Trent Reznor on Cash's version
@asilentfire No one is saying he wrote this. i also don't think people care about your political beliefs on a video of this magnitude. Please take your ignorance somewhere else. And I think you might need some help find/locating your caps lock button. This isn't the time nor the place for the Royal Canterlot Voice...
fair play if you look him up on wiki he's had a life. trust me i heard this song a few times but thought nothing properly of it but when i looked up on him, i see why
As a way to say “thank you Johnny” and to spread the love and passion for a legend of a soul, I thought I’d elaborate on two important ideas that seem to reoccur in our comments:
The fact that Johnny Cash did a cover song of Trent Reznor’s masterpiece shows that Johnny recognized and was willing to give credit to worth-wild music of today’s generation.
I can’t stand it when an artist from an older generation makes a blanket statement such as “All today’s music sucks”, especially when there must have been a time when the very same thing was said about their music and change and new or different styles, etc.
In this video, you can basically see/feel everything you need to see and feel from Johnny Cash the man; that’s what makes the video so touching: it’s 1000% real,
and I figure at that point in his life there would be no kind of pressure or threat that could force him to perform/produce something he didn’t agree with and that he didn’t want to do. So to me, Johnny is letting his fans know that he is on-point and well aware of what’s happening and being produced in “today’s generation” of artists.
As an additional bravo to Johnny, I believe that if he wanted too he could have went to the drawing-board and came up with a haunting basic melody of his own on guitar along with lyrics that would rip our hearts out, but to be so mature as to recognize and endorse another fellow artist’s work because everything that Johnny may have wanted to convey was pretty much perfectly conveyed by Trent, is a testament to how humble and sincere the man is.
The other idea I want to touch on is based on a comment I read here which was a fair reminder: the comment pointed-out that this vid reminds us of the hardships of old-age, and that by looking at Johnny, in spite of his achievements and triumphs, we see a tortured old man, etc. But in the spirit of wisdom and believing that Johnny was as sharp and wise as they come, I know he wouldn’t want us to think of him that way.
What I take from Johnny’s pain and his “looking back on things now” approach the video expresses, is the most beautiful final lesson and reminder to all of us, which is that when we do reach those last days of our lives we will look back on many of those younger years and realize how precious they are. What Johnny would want us to do right now is to make the most of our time now, sincerely.
And in his humble way, that would be us just going over to the one we love, our family, someone we care about and expressing our love and just taking a moment to enjoy being alive, knowing that times like this we will remember forever.
Johnny helped teach me that you pick yourself up and start over as many times as it takes.
Johnny Cash, no excuses, no hype, we learn by living, pure legend-
Each person has a story to tell, big and small. But that doesn't mean it will be heard. A tree falling the forest will not resound throughout all of the world, but the impact and crater it creates will last for all eternity. We grow up to be a person and each person has feelings to question and ask. Johnny will be remembered. An impact in history will always be remembered. But it is the will of whom who wants to make the impact that counts. R.I.P Johnny Cash.
I wish I knew the story behind the record in the broken picture frame. Johnny would be smiling at all the attention 38 million hits. Rip my old friend...!!!
This song may not be an original, but was made for Johnny Cash. Both versions are incredibly different. NIN made a great song, but Johnny created a masterpiece of life.
All Cash fans have a little piece of Johnny in them that will never quite disappear, Johnny you will live forever in the hearts of everyman and woman that has worn black on their back and kept your music ringing in their ears.
We will forever miss you and your music is your gift to us
Anyone who would hate on this Cover..has NO CLUE what music is all about. Even a cover, ESPECIALLY a cover...the covering artist should make it his own....Trent Reznor is a Genius in what he does...and Johnny Cash is a Genius in what he does (you don't' last what 50-years in the biz unless you are one). I feel quite confident Reznor felt Cash "respected" the TRUE RAW emotional feel of this song. It's beautiful by both Musicians....And known to be Cash's "goodbye song.
I wish this man was still around........ I'm goona try to be as good as him some day. I have a poster of him on my wall and everyday I say to myself I'm goona be as good as him one day.. There's no good music anymore it's all about sex, drugs, and violence now.. What's happening to society today... I write my own songs, check them out if you have the time please.

Mr Cash signed 4 cd sleeves for me that night before his concert in 1994 at the Pikes Peak Center in Colorado Springs. I will never sell those autographs or pictures. I plan to give them as gifts to my brothers for Christmas this year, as a gift (knowing the worth of such pics and autograph) but didn't obtain them backstage to make money. He < mr CASH , was a true gentleman and a nice guy that night. :)
THE SINGLE BEST SONG RECORDED in modern times from such a CLASS ACT. Such a nice ending to a beautiful man and career. LOL. BLESS YOU MR CASH ! I met you once in early 1994 backstage. You were very nice and signed autographs and took pictures. Bless you SIR ! (footnote: for Mr Cash to record this song is nothing more than the best gift ever). :)
@Insanitied Enlighten me, who has under appreciated him? Whose forgotten him? Johnny Cash will live on forever and his music for all eternity. LMFAO will be forgotten in about 1 year.
In my opinion, you cannot listen and understand the meaning n feeling of this song untill you press play and close your eyes... try it, and you will 'see' what i mean
i once told my friends of this song(im 15 and never listen to this music) they tough i was an idiot because i listen to this but when they listen to this. I could se how emotional they became almost made me laugh to se them apologie to me.
This song has life written all over it. Even making mistakes is part of being human; it proves you feel something and that no one is perfect. It also proves Johnny Cash was a legend at being lyrical.
does anyone have sheets for this? for any instrument, i seek it for saxophone, but any other instrument do as well. i have lot of note sheets to give in trade :)
Trent wrote this song but the lyrics reflect Johnny' life and tribulations more for the fact of having lived a more rough and longer life,Trent writes about effigy's sometimes and could be's which is much like Johnny and that's why he appreciated this song enough to do it.RIP Johnny the music world suffered a big loss.
@EBBadd1 Trent was writing about his own hardships of drugs and going through rehab and stuff and the abandonment he faced when he wrote this. Just cause Johnny was older and experienced far more, doesn't make it any more meaningful for either singer. Trent acknowledged that this was the single greatest honor of his career Cash singing this. NIN Forever, RIP Johnny Cash
@tauwilltriumph you called that game art? listen im not going to waste my time arguing over a game you insolent fuck.So lets just leave it at that and called it a day peace.
@HotbagelsProject ...how is that ignorant? i think it is straight fact. today's music in general dissapoints me. it isn't even about the music anymore
I saw a Trent Reznor interview about this video, and he said something to the extent of it being like seeing your ex walking down the street with (her) new romance, and how he treats her better than you ever could.
I read Dark Tower 7 by Stephen King and discovered severals rows named by Renzor at the beginning. Google said it is a song on it by Johnny Cash - after listening i got the answer what's the book about.
he told us goodbye, not goodbye now please tell reznor mine is better than yours, just his own way of saying goodbye, so please just listen, not many artists live long enough to say it, so just listen
This song was made me loose all respect for Cash. This song is like waaaaaaaaay to emo. This is proabably the kind of song suicidal butch lesbians listen too.

This song has life written all over it. Even making mistakes is part of being human; it proves you feel something and that no one is perfect. It also proves Johnny Cash was a legend at being lyrical.

Trent and Johnny were gay for each other and shared their music as well as their twisted man-love.

UNKNOWNBASTARD007 3 days ago
Trent wrote this song but the lyrics reflect Johnny' life and tribulations more for the fact of having lived a more rough and longer life,Trent writes about effigy's sometimes and could be's which is much like Johnny and that's why he appreciated this song enough to do it.RIP Johnny the music world suffered a big loss.
EBBadd1 3 days ago
@EBBadd1 Trent was writing about his own hardships of drugs and going through rehab and stuff and the abandonment he faced when he wrote this. Just cause Johnny was older and experienced far more, doesn't make it any more meaningful for either singer. Trent acknowledged that this was the single greatest honor of his career Cash singing this. NIN Forever, RIP Johnny Cash

@eqproductions Wow, I still think I would like this version best but Adele would do a good job too.

Johnny Cash's daughter said in a documentary, "Dad, this song sounds so dark, like you're saying Goodbye". She said Johnny's response was, "I am".

@jakeshaw123 Maybe for people that dont know where to look. Wilco, Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear. All at least as good as Cash. Really good.

Great artist, great lyric, great song.

he told us goodbye, not goodbye now please tell reznor mine is better than yours, just his own way of saying goodbye, so please just listen, not many artists live long enough to say it, so just listen

I'm sorry to all the NIN fans out there, but Johnny's version of Hurt is so much more soulful and heartfelt than Trent's! I'm actually crying!
