The only thing I really liked about this version was keeping the graphics original. The lack of music, though, makes me prefer the 32X version for ports.
I had this for my Jaguar back in the day. I used to play it for hours non stop. I'm gutted that no-one has written a really good emulator for the Jag. I'd love to play the old Jag games but with a 360 joypad.
Very nice and tbh this is how doom should be played without music blasting in your ears, just the creepy sound effects played through a surround sound system. Oh and don't forget lights off!
Great graphics, very solid and smooth. Methinks the PSX version is the definitive version though, only due to the improved / overhauled sound FX and "musical" score :)
I meant for this game because you know I'm commenting on a video showing game play. I was really commenting on how poorly they created the system. It was not developer friendly at all the way they designed the architecture.
@flipidy94 If I remember correctly, the PlayStation played music directly from the CD and had a slower frame rate than the Jag. PlayStation also came out nearly two years after the Jag. N64 a year after that. Hmmm
Sheesh, how can anyone say there are better console versions of Doom than this? The graphics and sound effects are exactly like the PC version, for crying out loud!
Since the Jag has a controller,I'd say this is better than the PC version... if it only had some music! The "it's more atmospheric" argument is invalid, because that explains why no music is the default, not why music isn't even an option!
Speaking of the controller, about how many Jag games used any of the "telephone" buttons?
I've been playing a little Doom the last couple days -- more to test something things out, but every time I stick it in I end up playing longer than I had planned ;-)
nah this isnt the best console version kinda dull without the music and also this version has to load a little thats a little weird no other cartridge port does
Personally, I think it's ok without the music. It gives it a bit scarier feel.
Carmack himself stated it was the best console version, but that may have been before the PSX, but as A31Chris stated earlier on, the 32X, GBA & PSX were ports FROM the Jaguar ;)
I love the Jaguar version. Same with Wolfenstein 3D on Jaguar, I wish I still had that fucking system. I loved it. I think Alien vs Predator was the best game for Jaguar though.
I got my Doom cart and had been stuck on level 12 for about a year on Hurt Me Plenty mode. I finally had to turn the difficulty down a notch to make it past there.
This brings back memories of back in early 95 when i was having a hell of a time finding this game. It was always sold out at the few game stores that carried Jaguar stuff. I was very pleased with it when I got it. This is indeed one of the two best console versions of Doom. The other being PSX. I'll put this one ahead of the PSX version because it came out 2 years prior and the PSX version is ported from this version. Jaguar's keypad controller is very handy in this game too.
There's a DOOM Wiki article with sources from an interview with ID software that says the 32X,GBA,and PSX versions are all derived from the Jaguar port. The sources include an article from "VideoGames" magazine and an interview with ID software probably taken from the magazine.
Well the Doom communities sources do not include the C code for the RISC's that was made using id's custom compiler. Only the assembly files are there.
The Jaguar assembly files would be useless on any other system. id must of chose not to release the C sources.

its a good game despite its lack of music but playing this game at night without music just makes its 100x scarier

Is this captured on a actual Jaguar? Runs quite fluently! Never thought it would run so fast....

From what I understand, the music might even be there in the source, but Carmack had trouble with performance when it was enabled.

I didn't know the Jag version of Doom had no music. That sucks.
The only drawback the 32X version of Doom has is that border, and only 15 stages, the rest is okay.
tnafever 2 years ago
Nah, it's better without the music. I don't usually like music in my games, anyway. AvP is a good example of that as well. It adds to the atmosphere.
Anyway, the 32X version is simply bad compared to most other versions.
viMasterJag 2 years ago
At least the Jag version should have the option of putting music in the options

In my opinion, the Atari Jaguar had the best version out there. I still have my system.

wheres the music
esh325 3 years ago
There is no music in-game on JagDoom. Only during intermission.
A31Chris 3 years ago
Oh yeeaaaah. I was disappointed at first I remember but it made the game seem creepier because you couldn't focus on the music.

come on man nothing beats the PC version

Meant to say best console version :)
