• James Mercer sounds kind of different in this song...

  • Its a plymouth valiant

  • Was this video filmed near Pullman, WA? Sure looks like it.

  • I love Kevin Spacey.

  • Why the ugly red "KoRn" font on a beautiful video?

  • there such a great band.

  • Anybody know what the make/model of the car in this video is?

  • could you tell me the album this song is on?

  • @meinnebenmir Oh Inverted World is the album' s name, a master piece btw

  • Awesome how a simple song like this can be this great. Love it.

  • R.I.P. Heath Ledger <3

Since this was one of his favourite songs, it was also played in his funeral..

Some other ones that he loved were:

The Times They Are A Changing by Bob Dylan

    Superstition by Stevie Wonder

Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd

Seven Nation Army by White Stripes

Miss him. He was an amazing actor/director, and also had good taste in music.

  • To DS. RIP.

  • Shins... How I love you!

  • magnifique song !

  • it goes on a bit to be honest

  • Does anybody know who directed this?

  • This should have way more views,,, seriously.

  • I like how their videos take on a life of their own.

  • i'm in love.

  • When I listen to this song I can still remember late autumn in Portland, when the days were short but the hours seemed so long. My past and pending. Thanks, James Mercer.

  • If you don't like this, you don't have a soul.

  • the only point in labels is to organize your itunes. aside from that the only 2 labels that really matter are good music and bad music, which of course is subjective (other than the polar/near polar extremes of each, which are a matter of fact IMO)

  • this music dose not cause me feelings of self hate and inclinations of taking a knife to my wrists lol. Try the emo symphony where the kid plays Mozart on his wrists with a very sharp bow :)

  • "Enter the fog another low road descending" UFO descending at 1:22!!! OK so it was the camera lens, but were they hinting at the wonder of UFO's?????

  • First time I heard it, I immediately googled the tabs. Wonderful song.

  • it's so relaxing =D

  • Life is full questions and we are all just trying to find the answer, why we are here, our purpose, I remember listening to this song while i was walking and i was thinking about how every person has a story, a path a future. I was walking on this long road just behind the suburbs where there are trees and houses, the sun was coming down and it just gave the perfect mood to this song. People walked by me and i just asked whats their story what have they been through what will happen next

  • @hardcorelifeforus000

lol. No offense, not trying to bash...I had to chuckle a bit though 'cause every line you typed was something I've heard a million times from my peers being introspective and deep (including myself).

  • @alewis18 I'm so high

  • @hardcorelifeforus00 nice..same.

  • @hardcorelifeforus000 i think that was the most amazing comment ive ever read on youtube. beautiful... :)

  • Is the video about him taking pictures of his past and showing them to his future self, ie the old man? I plan on using this song for an english project for the book, Night

  • Crimen Sollicitationis

  • That's pretty cool the Shins made a video with shots taken in and around Oregon, maybe sometime before they relocated to Portland??? If so...I can relate, been touring Oregon for a few years to help decide on a critical move for a better life, hopefully!

  • my loverrrrrly.... awwwwwwww this song... oh ohhhh this song.

i loves you Shins!!!!! makes me so happy. this song is just so wonderful.

  • I loveeeeeeeeeee

  • One of Heath Ledger's favorite song. And this song was at his funeral :(

  • This song reminds me of my childhood, my family, my friends and holidays. It makes me feel happy yet, a bit sad. A feeling I really can't describe.

I <3 The Shins so much!

  • @MariaHamsterLover OhMyLord! I Know that feeling. It's like those were your best years, so it makes you happy but sometimes you wish you could travel back to those days.. and you can't, which makes you sad. It's a recurring emotion for me, which is why I understand it so well.

  • @RoneceMoore You described my feelings perfectly <3. Glad I'm not the only one who feels that way sometimes. Time flies so fast! Someone just needs to build a time machine :(. And I'm only 15 years old...

  • @MariaHamsterLover Yeah, it's because the world is so messed up today. Everything is definitely changing..and not it a good way.

  • @MariaHamsterLover I know that feel bro :(

  • It's like the sound of summer. Makes me long for sunnier days. -Norway.

  • how can anyone dislike this? seriously If this does not speak to you on some level then you really have no soul, not everything has to be a dance track...

  • @heber810 - Seriously . . . how can anyone not like this song??!!

  • i'm gonna start running with a camera and taking pictures of all the beautiful things i can see

  • Comment removed

  • This was one of Heath Ledger's favourite songs.

    R.I.P.

  • @MarinaCrosbie9

belive it or not, that's why I first heard this song

    r.i.p <3

  • @filetemar me too!!!! R.I.P beautiful song!

  • Music to dream by.

  • this is life. God. how do you write a song that is life?

  • To me this song encapsulates so many fleeting feelings. It rekindles the enigma that I felt when I was little, and found the corny, mass-produced cardboard cut-outs at barnes and noble mystical-- otherworldly. It's beautiful and so simple. I hope everyone can connect so deeply to this song.

  • @magua4 Yes, but i feel an infinite sadness. I am reminded that time is not on my side, that I am not just building life but death. There may come a point in my life when I look back, look at the beautiful tangle of lines, the intersecting pathways of experience now only held in the abstraction of memory, and try to honestly make sense of my self.

What is this song but our existential situation, entrapped in the present, stuck between the past and pending...sigh.

  • i always get depressed when i see this video...i really like it, but it just seems so melancholic..

  • Ah, Portland.... It's not all weird like a certain TV show makes it out to be

  • 3:00 - perfect lefts!!!! where's that spot?!?!

  • cool song, i posted it on my fb John O'Kane the guy with the down turned head wearing a blue oxford and a blue and red tie, I always post songs with one of my ugly poems, my uncle sameus Heaney won a noble prize for his poetry my just lines the cat box but fun to read anyway so come check it out .

  • I love this song so much, my favorite song by far ever. And it is awesome this is all around the hometown Portland!

  • What kind of car is that?

  • @iridecustom 65 plymouth valiant- 4 door

  • @ioriorioriorio

    Actually, that's a 1963 Plymouth Valiant 4-door.

  • It's so simple and yet so beautiful.. i love the shins :)

  • What the hell is with the 12 dislikes???... to each their own I guess. lol

  • @twistedlogic8808 lol, I thought the same thing.

  • @twistedlogic8808 lol, I thought the same thing.

  • Let's hear a big Hurray for the Empire Builder!

  • Such an amazing song with so many different meanings in the lyrics. Love then Shins :)

  • This song defines the world.

  • Beautiful song.

The shins are my favorite band

  • Any Beatles/Pink Floyd fan would love this song :)

  • @WhoisJacqueFresco

    Great call, couldn't agree more

  • @WhoisJacqueFresco Hey... I'm a HUUUUUGGGGGEEEE Beatles and a Pink Floyd fan and I LOVE this song. It's one of my all time favorites. Good job predicting that.

Oh, I am also, of course a HUUUUUGGGGGEEE Shins fan. :)

  • this song really brings out my inner feminism. I am a grown man 6'2 220 pounds. I have a beard long enough to tickle my chest hair but damnit I have a feminist side and this song really gets that side out there. When I listen to this song I have the strong urge to make sandwiches and iron clothes and wash dishes. I love this song and I love america.

  • @c411911owns i really hope youre not implying that all that defines a woman is her ability to cook and clean...i dont see any of those actions as strictly feminine or masculine

  • @c411911owns

How ironic you misuse the word feminism.

Besides, women can have a beard that long too you know. It's just a little difficult during ironing.

  • love this song

  • they are not emo. there emotional

  • This song was played at Heath Ledgers funeral, and no matter how long ive known this before his death, I always seem to think its a song for his passing. Either way, great song guys, this is so inspirational

  • Yay for Portland bands!!!!!!!!! They ARE JUST AS GOOD LIVE!!!!!! Notice the shot of the car crossing the St. John's bridge!!!! I love The Shins!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • They´re from Alberquerque.

  • @rawbert7 But they live in StumpTown now. :)

  • I recently went through a break up, this band seriously makes me happy

  • 12 people who disliked this couldn't handle how awesome this band is.

  • this song was played at heath ledgers funeral

  • That sure is a long golden hour.

  • As someone sets light to the first fire of autumn

We settle down to cut ourselves apart.

Cough and twitch from the news on your face

And some foreign candle burning in your eyes

Held to the past too aware of the pending

Chill as the dawn breaks and finds us up for sale.

  • 12 dead people..

  • Your name on my cast and my notes on your stay

Offer me little but doting on a crime.

We've turned every stone and for all our inventions

In matters of love loss, we've no recourse at all.

Blind to the last cursed affair pistols and countless eyes

A trail of white blood betrays the reckless route your craft is running

Feed till the sun turns into wood dousing an ancient torch

Loiter the whole day through and lose yourself in lines dissecting love.

  • On January 24, 2008, "The Past and Pending" was played at the funeral of Heath Ledger

  • i adore this song. so much.

  • I can listen to this song over and over again. It relaxes and makes me happy. The video flows perfectly with the melody of the song.

  • i thumbs this down because the video owners ad for his website leads to a site with no vids. it's just a layout.

  • Love this song and video. Reminds me a bit of suedehead by morrissey. The video that is not the song.

  • lol, emo was a genre of music made in the late 80's usually with melodic deep lyrics. Nothing to do with screaming or cutting yourself, The Get Up Kids is an emo band from the 90's for example. The Shins aren't emo, but not far from it. I don't really care about labeling music but I'd just call it Indie.

  • @StaleMilk5 You are entirely correct. Very rare for the average youtube user :P

  • @StaleMilk5 : Very incorrect statement. There was no such thing as Emo or Goth in the 80's. The term Goth, Goth Music, Goth Metal wasn't even around until the mid 90's and the music was very different from the amalgamized Pop/Punk/Alternative music scene of the 80's.

  • @ForedeckShuffle

Sorry, but you're wrong. Emo is short of emotive hardcore and came into play in the late 80s after a band called Rites of Spring branched from punk and thats what really started it all...and goth was most certainly a genre in the 80s as well and goth, The banshees, Danse Society, etc is traditional goth new wave. I'm not quite sure where you get your facts.

  • @ForedeckShuffle No Goth in the 80s? Utter bollocks. As someone who lived in London in the 80s and who was a regular at clubs like The Electric Ballroom in Camden, and the pure goth club somewhere around Tufnel Park, not to mention Kentish Town, I can assure you that there was already a strong Goth movement going. The Banshees inadvertently began it, via the Join Hands album, and it was led by Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, The Mission, The Cure ( Faith and Pornography), Bauhaus, etc.

  • @StaleMilk5 I like to call it folk or art

  • @pappydinksmoms Yes, Baroque. That's what the Shin's genre is. Same with bands like Dr. Dog, The Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Vetiver, and Iron and Wine.

  • @StaleMilk5 Yes, the Shins are Baroque, or Indie Rock. Nothing close to emo. Just because somebody writes deep, melancholy lyrics doesn't mean you can rank someone emo. I wouldn't classify as Emo, though. More dark, or goth. The et Up Kids, The Smiths, and The Cure are examples. Same with the Velvet Underground. Just because music is "Deep" doesn't make it dark, or goth. This song is lovely, and so is this band.

  • Wasn't this song played in Heath Ledger's funeral? I read it somewhere. Amazing song.

  • Are they using a trumpet in this song

  • @mccody7 no it is not a trumpet, it is a french horn.

  • I know this is late but I'm relatively certain it's a French Horn.

  • i don't care what anyone labels this song as..... this is a great song! (my 1st time listening to it here)

  • shins and emo? what shit did you smoke?

  • @sgriffin1989 wrong

  • don't you have your own taste and favourite bands oder do you need someone else's?

there's no need to glorify him.

  • This is was played at Heath Ledger's funeral I heard. Great song.

  • was this filmed in Portland? It looks like it.

  • This is without any doubt one of my favourite The Shins songs.

Regarding the video: absolutely amazing... just like the song.

  • love the video. brings on a whole new meaning

  • Kick Ass is probably not an appropriate response to a Shins song but... KICK ASS! Great video too.

  • Excelente música !!!

  • clearly influenced by Syd Barrett...i love that song: )

  • @raidengougounne

Pink Floyd and the Shins make the world go round. :)

  • I was trying to think of some kind of amazing and inspiring comment to post here, but I think I'll just say-

Listen to the song. It's awesome

    and leave it at that.

  • If you all love this, please check out the Bluetones - Hope and Jump. They are officially the most underrated band of all time, and Hope and Jump is one of my favourite songs ever. The shins are in my top 5 favourite bands but Hope and Jump is just incredible. Tell me what you think!

  • good song

    really like it

  • I did a slide show of family pictures to this song... It was amazing. I get tears in my eyes just thinking about it. very cool... deep... meaningful... One of the best slide show to pictures I've ever seen, because of this song.

  • why does the last caption say "rain" by the cult? lol

    big snafu

  • Where can I get the video for Weird Divide and not just a still shot of Oh Inverted World.

  • Can anyone tell me where you think the video was shot? It looks like nor cal...part of it anyways. Somewhere between the bay area and the 5 fwy?

  • This song really brings out something I cannot really explain without sounding completely sentimental. It's beautiful.

  • is the old man suposed t represent the pending and himself as the oast or am i just to high

  • according to wikipedia they played this at heath ledger's funeral...

  • @xXxXxbw18xXxXx declaring something as "NOT EMO" is emo

  • @Kailys3

    How?

  • @Kailys3 Declaring something as "emo" is emo.
