After this performance, he drank all the booze and banged out at least 10 supermodels. Post-copulation, clad in only a silk robe with a bulging Cubano in his mouth, he walked out on to his hotel patio overlooking the city. He took a puff, exhaled and just laughed. That city was built for him.
I think he was simply tired of this song. I saw him in the early 2000's and he really didn't want to sing it. But it made them both famous and he should be grateful. And he has a wonderful voice. I think he sold himself short with the music he sang. I love it, but it's not timeless.
I saw Daryl Hall perform this in the 80's and when he sang it he was crying and got down on hands and knees and was beating the stage while singing. We were like 'wow something is going on here'. I tried to find out why and then I found out about Sara Allen.
He's got range, good ad-libbing, but no soul. There was a sexy, soulfulness to this song when they used to do it. Here, it's done too fast & somehow, the magic is lost.
Saw then in the prime in 1982. Darrel is a talent but a fuck stick because he is a junkie who can not stick to a script. He it tripping of in la la land and forgets people pay to see him sing like they hear on the radio.
@africkinamerican You don't understand how this idiot can take a simple 4 minute song and morph into a 15 minute self indulgent crap that does not even remotely resemble the song that he started.
@PresidentGas1 Yeah my mom said that these dudes were always really the only white artists that alot blacks listened to back in teh day......SOUL is a concept that has been forgotten in todays music. These guys had it
Growing up in the late seventies and eighties, all we listened to were R&B radio stations. Hall and Oates were on all of them hangin with Stevie Wonder, Frankie Beverly and Maze, etc... These guys are BAD!!! Love 'em
Hall and Oats were so good and still are.. They did some great songs.. Then, they weren't as popular, pumping out hit after hit like they did before.. That must be very difficult as a musician.. To try and follow yourself in hits, time after time..
i love this song, my mama used to play it when i was little. (i prefer music that took place between the 60's and 90's to this techno crud thats out now.)
however, i find that i prefer the recording to the live perfomance (it could just my 20 year old brain not understanding the significance of it all) but i feel as if the recording has WAAAY MORE EMOTION than this particular performance. it sounds more like he's just trying to get the crowd hype. he is a talented live perfomer though
@daisyplayer The live version has its own groove ... it's a different groove from the album, but both are good. Many performers, maybe most, speed up the tempo in a live show. It's just a different situation and it's easier to get the crowd into it if you do it a little faster. And they want to have something for their guitarist to do, so they have him play on the live version, so it becomes kind of a different song. But that's what makes these guys such great artists.
@JEdgarGroover And for the life of me, I still unclear why people hold G. Smith in such high regard. I have seen him play live and heard him countless times. . . I don't know what the fuss is all about. He is a good guitarist, but not a monster guitarist.
I guess this is just another example of N.Y. hype / bullshit. New Yorkers are notorious for this- They think anything (or anyone) from N.Y. is God and anything outside of N.Y. is shit.
@TheDubDoubt his pitch was kinda off when he was echoing Daryl during the break. But I agree John could sing, wish he'd gotten more chances to get out of Daryl's shadow back then, and stand on his own two feet. He could've developed a style as strong as Daryl's but didn't get many opportunities.
@MajCinematic Underrated by the critics and the "cool" crowd in the '80s and '90s
But as time wore on into the 00's it became harder and harder to deny that H&O were the real deal. Listen to the crap that passes for music out there nowadays!
@africkinamerican They were "Cool" at least by 1984 with number one hits like "Out of touch" and Dryl's "Dreamtime".....I think they were appreciated and ceertainly more successful than a lot of crap. I also agree lots of music is SHIT today compared to this.....actually this and older 80's music is ALL I listen too I hate auto tune click track shit today.
