Such and incredible actress and performer. She just digs into those lower notes and floats of into the high ntoes with INCREDIBLE ease. RIP Bubbles :)
Whatever issues I have with Sills' voice, although I'd be entirely under qualified to have any, she certainly makes it up 10 fold with her wonderful personality. Similar joy and passion of Diana Damrau today.
@saxamaphoneguy1 I was about to say the same thing. Her voice is, IMHO, very good, but not great. Her acting skills are very good, but not great. But with that smile and her overall expression of her personality (which I have heard was overwhelmingly attractive offstage as well) the whole thing is wonderbar. For those who, during her career, were actively following her opera company it is no wonder they grew to love her so much.
you know beverly sillls said a lot of things about her voice, and they aren't all necessarily true. she undertook devreaux even after estelle liebling told her it would destroy her voice, and it certainly punished her pure tone, and the more open throat singings she adopted for the heavier vocal attacks in devereux eventually left her top notes dimished, as well as her high piano tones. her illness in the 70's probably had less to due with her vocal changes, than aging and the heavier roles.
como podeis decir que es maravillosa....cambia notnas, no se adapta a la partitura original del compositor, cambia vocales para facilitar su entonación, comprobad en otras versiones, ej bartoli, berganza....si no cantas como dejó escrito el compositor....en fin
I love the voice, but the interpretation of this song by Beverly just doesn't seem right to me. She is to chipper in her interpretation I always see Rosina being a little more devious or demanding in the love!! However, I still love Beverly Sills she has such an amazing catch to her voice!
I think her interpretation of the cavatina, along with Callas' and maybe Gheorghiu's or Sutherland's, are the best found. This is the first time i really LISTEN to Beverly Sills and her voice is not small, it only seems like it 'cause she was a lyric coloratura and they sound sweet, light and youthful.
Non riesco proprio a capire come possa piacere queste Sills, che canta in maniera così sguaiata! Forse a molti interessano solo gli acuti, senza nessuna espressione! Boh...
Fantastic! She was one of the best. My favorite for sure. Her high notes and coloratura give me the chills. And it's so wonderful to see someone perform who was so obviously in love with what she was doing.
well, the technical skills and the ornementation are truly great, but does she really have to play it so lightly? She's not supposed to be so exclusively happy at this moment... A bit more tragical and she'd have benn perfect!!!
Wait...okay, so can someone explain to me Beverly's jaw action. I was looking at another clip in her much younger days and it seemed as if she didn't have that problem...is that just a bad habit that she developed later in life?? I know she sounds amazing, but how did she get away with that jaw for so long without doing anything about it?? Just a question...
Hmm I noticed that too because I get yelled at by my voice teacher when I do that. Ha.. But yeah, I guess it's just a bad habit she got into. Though it doesn't seem to affect the quality of her voice. She had a wonderful voice until the end.
This jaw action is caused by basal-tongue or jaw tension. With as much sub-glottal pressure as it takes for a such a large voice to sing so high, unless one maintains impeccable support this wobble of the jaw slowly creeps in over time. The slower and wider vibrato (than her earlier recordings) are a bi-product of this tension, which is one reason by Ms. Sills retired a little earlier than some opera singers did.
By 1976, Estelle Liebling, Beverly's voice teacher for many years, was long dead and Beverly never found a successor (there could never be a "replacement") for her. The result of that was that slowly the voice degenerated as more and more bad habits crept in. That is the reason that she retired from singing in 1980 -- I was at her final performance, which was Die Fledermaus -- and moved on to her next fabulous career as the managing director of the NYC Opera Co., her long-time stage home.
I thinl another reason for her early retirement was to attempt Donizetti roles that were too heavy for her delicate voice. Sills later commented that Roberto Devereux shortened her career by at least four years.
Would you be very offended if I told you that your observations are not quite correct?
Estelle Liebling's death had nothing to do with Beverly's vocal decline whatsoever.
Beverly underwent cancer surgery in 1974 and admitted that her stamina never returned afterwards. She also reassured EVERYONE that undertaking Roberto Devereax shortened her singing career but she was happy to take that risk! She said she would rather have 10 exciting years as a singer than 25 boring ones.
So natural, everything comes out spontaneously as it were easy. there need to be italian blood all through this aria. she doesn't have and cannnot put it in, but creates nonetheless a convincing caracter. Supreme technic, and a voice that i miss alot
I agree she is a lovely actress, great and warm stage presence. Her singing is true coloratura. Personally, however, I compare everyone with the great Teresa Berganza, who sings Una voce.. with such straightforward and honest intensity and power. Sills' interpretation here is a bit too ornamented for me, but that's just a matter of taste.
My computer seems to bring me to this site automatically after finding this place less than a month ago. Sills is superb both as as actess and a singer. Adorable and competant!
I shall be back here tomorrow and the tomorrow after that.
This interpretation is very good. I think she has a wonderful technique and she looks very funny. But it's too bad she sings not the high F at the end.
that's not true. the more POPULARIZED versions are in the key of F, but in actuality: it is more often performed in teh original key (E), because of the movement of most major opera houses to stick to what was originally written, so people usually try to dig up an amazing mezzo, and they have the person sing it in E. it's really not in F most times at all, also because it's hard to find a coloratura that does the piece true justice without showing off TOO much, which takes away usually.
i would like to touch on a horrendous comment that someone made... If you will kindly notice that it is quite impossibile for Sills to miss the audience, they are right in front of her! Keep your ignorant, pompous opinions to yourself, for true artists and appreciators of those artists have no time for your stupidity.
I think, as a personal preference, it should be should to herself instead of to the audience, as it looks like shees doing. Maybe the directions are to sing it to the audience, but it should be like she's totally in love and doesn't notice anyone else (aka, audience) But,again, that's just a personal preference. Otherwise, her singing was quite nice!
Though Beverly Sills was an adorable Rossina with a voice of an indisputable beauty, I remain with Cecilia Bartoli, due to the incomparable coloratura of her voice, her interpretive force and her look, which they transmit an indescribable emotion capable of perforating even the most insensitive of the hearts.
