I got one.The only dislike I have is the car isn't as fun to drive at the Mazda 2 and Fiesta. Also it looks retarded. Dunno what Toyota was thinking when they designed it.But overall it's not a bad car.It is reliable and good on fuel.It's a good car not great.
I've driven a 2009 3 door hatchback now for 6 months. I've been hit twice. Its in the shop atm and I am borrowing my father's Land rover discovery. I have to say I truly miss my yaris, she was so reliable and kept me safe. I don't know how the newer models handle but mine was a dream and just how I expected it. I would suggest it to anyone who wants a reasonable car. And in short, I MISS my yaris. :p
Yhis car is rubbish I drive it for work and its acceleratoe is garbage it takes 3 seconds to actually kick in and only when its half way down , the accelerator feels like it only has 2 settings on and off so you have to keep moving your foot on and off the pedal. A shame because everything else is alright, I would have preffered dials instead of digital.

"Toyota" and "sub par customer service" do not go together. My partner has a Toyota Yaris 1.0 VVTi. I have a Ford Fiesta. The Yaris isn't a patch on the Fiesta I admit in terms of ride, handling or comfort, HOWEVER it is better built and the customer service we have had from Toyota dealerships is vastly better than we have ever had from Ford (or Vauxhall) over the years. The Yaris, in my opinion, is a very under rated little car. The 1.0 VVTi is a great engine too - 55mpg easy!
I have a Vitz 1.0 Litre (Japanese import Yaris), not the 1.5 Ltr that you Americans get, and it's terrible. It's my first car and all that crap, but I hate it. I'll never buy a toyota when I get a car of my own. built cheaply, handles like a dog, and for fuck's sake don't get the automatic. it guzzles gas and hangs on gears. Every competition has redesigned their subcompact cars and even when Toyota comes up with the 3rd generation Yaris it will still struggle to gain back all the customers Toyota pissed off over the past few years with their recalls, poor quality and sub par customer service.

I've got this car, love it, perfect in every way and it really moves. I love the instrument panel, the handling is FAR Superior to the GM cars I used to drive. Fabulous car for the money. Great winter car too - never gets stuck in terrible Canadian winters. Holds its own on the highway. I'd never buy a US car again, love my Toyota.
The center-mounted instrument panel is a deal-breaker for me. I think it would be awkward and annoying looking to your right all the time. You could get use to it but see no reason why Toyota put it dead smack in the middle. It's not even angled to the driver. I don't see any point in it being in the center, the passenger doesn't need to see the instrument panel.
It doesn't have a massive V8, it's not HUGE, it's Japanese(!) Unacceptable in the U.S. It's all wrong then! Death to the Yaris owners! Kill'em all, buy a Chevy or die!

I never once before would image driving or consider a car like the this, but considering the way gas prices are and the fact I don't have the best financial means I too am highly considering trading my jeep for a Yaris as well.

The WORST car I have EVER driven. For the record I have not driven a Smart or a really old yugo or fiat...the tiniest margin of a glimmer of hope if your a glass 1/2 fuller.....the Yaris is that bad.
Here's my experience, exactly 20yrs ago I was driving a 911 2.7, following Porsche club outings with my 4yr old son. In order just to keep the turbos in sight I am doing 120km+ while they are200+, suddenly a large patch of water appeared in front and I did a pigeon turn and end up 6" in front of the curb. Since then I sold the 911 as I do not want my son to meet god earlier than iI expect.
I then change to a 2nd gen Mit Spacewagon..... ctn in next paragraph.
I hv plenty of friends diving super machines, Zonda cinque, apollos, not to mention Ferraris. I enjoy watching them with their cars. But those are not my cup of tea.
I hv now five cars and I take the public transport to wk daily. I dr my cars 6am daily purely for fun.
When I retire in future I shall keep one classic and get myself a new yaris or corolla or maz 2

I own the Indonesian version.The Indonesian version has more chromes and an updated suspension.I took it on a corner around 60km/h and it handles great !

I especially like how they smell when I unload them...seriously even toyota loving co workers make note of the interior smell and their hatred of it. That's because all the plastic is from china. the emissions that come off it when new are literally sickening like NO other car - not even close! Koreans included! What lovely toxic materials are in that plastic. It's just a 15 yr. old echo underneath. the ride and steering is awful.
This is funny because I drive these compacts regularly. The Yaris is torture to drive. The interior is the cheapest in segment buy far - it stinks of toxic materials when new more than even a Kia or hynd. The ride quality is shit unlike his claims the steering is kia like and manual box is shit. I'v driven the new Mazda 2s and they put a smile on your face - much better sporty steering feel and ride quality, 2 steps up better interior quality, more power and a sweet manual box. no contest

There fucking cheap and torturous to endure (drive). Another advantage that the Yaris has over the Fit, Versa, etc....basic routine maintanence is so easy to do on this car. For example, it is so easy to change your own oil on the Yaris. The Fit and the Versa may give you more room, but take a look at the placement of the oil plug and filter....You can't change your own oil. This is why I chose a Yaris over the other options (Fit, Versa), because I wanted to do my own basic routine maintenance.

The new mazda 2 based Ford fiesta takes it up another notch with more features, best tech. pkg available in Sync, and the super trick dual clutch 6 speed. New and MUCH better choices for like money are now available from Mazda and Ford. Potential buyers don't believe me go and drive them all for yourself - I have.

Pretty much every one who owns a Yaris, loves it. Many also find it a lot of fun to drive. The manual trans is really the way to go, as the auto saps too much power. It's lightweight, inexpensive, and accelerates quite quickly (the MT). So, fun to drive, gas-sipping, and really nice looking; what's not to love?
I am no expert, nor am I the most experienced driver (Received learners permit 5 months ago) but I drive this at driving school, and on the road especially the highway this car is annoying to drive compared to the 09 mini and Impreza I practice on. The centered speedometer is hard to look at to check speed on the highway and the shifter is way to far down, furthermore it does not in any way feel put together in terms of quality. If I were to buy a compact car I'd go for a Mini or a Civic coupe.

The whole World (yes there's something outside US) knows that american car manufacturers (for example GM) had a lot of problem in 2007 and after, losing jobs etc. and the japanese cars were popular and sell better.

@raykrislianggi I would reccomend anyone making a decision, to first drive both, with and without the amont of people you plan to ride in the vehicle on both a daily basis and frequent occasion, while making sure to note not only the obvious, such as handling etc. but its LOW throttle power. How well it picks up speed in stop and go traffic, along with how often you need to downshift for steep inclines and hills on the highway.
The fit only gets 14.9 Km/L Highway and 11.9Km/l City.
Most people are buying the Yaris because it is simple, yet robust and reliable. Best fuel economy for the best price. The Fit has a couple extra HP, But if I wanted 0-60 times I would not be buying a base line car. VVTI is comparable to i-vtec... They both have folding seats. The fit does have a little more space, but is the same in passenger volume. They are both great, the Yaris just does the same thing, better, for less money.

@heybiglinus Hey I have two of these cars, I am 6ft 3 play Rugby , I don't wear specks or have black hair. A car to me is a means of getting from A to B quickly and cheaply. I have had bigger cars and they are a bitch to park in a hurry. My last car was an Audi Avant biggest piece of over engineered rubbish I have owned. When it was stolen I needed a car fast I walked into the Toyota dealership tested the Yaris and it was just what i needed. Don't generalise about cars and their owners it dumb.

I got one.The only dislike I have is the car isn't as fun to drive at the Mazda 2 and Fiesta. Also it looks retarded. Dunno what Toyota was thinking when they designed it.But overall it's not a bad car.It is reliable and good on fuel.It's a good car not great.

I've driven a 2009 3 door hatchback now for 6 months. I've been hit twice. Its in the shop atm and I am borrowing my father's Land rover discovery. I have to say I truly miss my yaris, she was so reliable and kept me safe. I don't know how the newer models handle but mine was a dream and just how I expected it. I would suggest it to anyone who wants a reasonable car. And in short, I MISS my yaris. :p

Yhis car is rubbish I drive it for work and its acceleratoe is garbage it takes 3 seconds to actually kick in and only when its half way down , the accelerator feels like it only has 2 settings on and off so you have to keep moving your foot on and off the pedal. A shame because everything else is alright, I would have preffered dials instead of digital.

"Toyota" and "sub par customer service" do not go together. My partner has a Toyota Yaris 1.0 VVTi. I have a Ford Fiesta. The Yaris isn't a patch on the Fiesta I admit in terms of ride, handling or comfort, HOWEVER it is better built and the customer service we have had from Toyota dealerships is vastly better than we have ever had from Ford (or Vauxhall) over the years. The Yaris, in my opinion, is a very under rated little car. The 1.0 VVTi is a great engine too - 55mpg easy!

I have a Vitz 1.0 Litre (Japanese import Yaris), not the 1.5 Ltr that you Americans get, and it's terrible. It's my first car and all that crap, but I hate it. I'll never buy a toyota when I get a car of my own. built cheaply, handles like a dog, and for fuck's sake don't get the automatic. it guzzles gas and hangs on gears. The car wasn't my choice. but I'm stuck with it.

I've got this car, love it, perfect in every way and it really moves. I love the instrument panel, the handling is FAR Superior to the GM cars I used to drive. Fabulous car for the money. Great winter car too - never gets stuck in terrible Canadian winters. Holds its own on the highway. I'd never buy a US car again, love my Toyota.

The center-mounted instrument panel is a deal-breaker for me. I think it would be awkward and annoying looking to your right all the time. You could get use to it but see no reason why Toyota put it dead smack in the middle. It's not even angled to the driver. I don't see any point in it being in the center, the passenger doesn't need to see the instrument panel.

I heard of a guy that did 900k miles in a Saab 900 Turbo he contacted Saab they took out his old engine and replaced with a new one i guess they wanted to put the old engine in their hall of fame. You must be maintaining that car to a high standard for that mileage.

After driving my 80+ yr old mun's echo sedan, I find no better car to replace, she knows very little about cars, yet she made the best decision!

I never once before would image driving or consider a car like the this, but considering the way gas prices are and the fact I don't have the best financial means I too am highly considering trading my jeep for a Yaris as well.

I ve a 2010 yaris sedan. Its roomy. Have large enough trank space. And best part less trip to gas station. When i see people left pump after paying $70 to fill up their suvs and i pay $30 and it goes for 350 to 380 mile in highway. I smile. I use it for my work. Already drove 47000 in 17 months. No prob. Sure the Yarris isn't as fast, tough looking etc. but my car isn't an extension of my penis so I had no qualms getting a Yarris. It gets me from point A to B safely. I got around 40 MPG in my Yaris going down I-90 in Ohio at 75-85 MPH. REALLY FUN TO DRIVE.
I get about 50-55 MPG going 55-60 MPH BUT THATS NO FUN! LOL

My government is encouraging people to buy this car for its ecologicalism by not asking ANY tax on this car. You just buy it for € 7000 or so, and there are no extra costs next to the little fuel you use. maybe insurance, but there are NO constant costs next to those.
BUT IT'S UGLY!
If they could just give it a cooler, sport look it would so much awesomer, it doesnt even have to have sportcar performance

The WORST car I have EVER driven. For the record I have not driven a Smart or a really old yugo or fiat...the tiniest margin of a glimmer of hope if your a glass 1/2 fuller.....the Yaris is that bad.

Here's my experience, exactly 20yrs ago I was driving a 911 2.7, following Porsche club outings with my 4yr old son. In order just to keep the turbos in sight I am doing 120km+ while they are200+, suddenly a large patch of water appeared in front and I did a pigeon turn and end up 6" in front of the curb. Since then I sold the 911 as I do not want my son to meet god earlier than iI expect.
I then change to a 2nd gen Mit Spacewagon..... ctn in next paragraph.

I hv plenty of friends diving super machines, Zonda cinque, apollos, not to mention Ferraris. I enjoy watching them with their cars. But those are not my cup of tea.
I hv now five cars and I take the public transport to wk daily. I dr my cars 6am daily purely for fun.
When I retire in future I shall keep one classic and get myself a new yaris or corolla or maz 2
I think when considering a good car one has to judge things like reliablity resell value spares and cost apart from the way it drive

All car manufacturers are jokers! They try to earn yr hard earned money, Yaris , corollas are some of the cars produced that serve the purpose of commuting, with reasonable money.
Here I also hv to mention Mazda 2, very good car. I owe a first generation Mazda 3 after 120000km still running strong minimal maintaince.
With speed limit and radar zones and traffic jams in most civilised countries, the above cars are all U need. Sometimes even 40km at school zones!!

I've driven 100's of different vehicles because of my occupation and toyotas are always among the worst drives...but then again I'm a car enthusiast so I have plenty of company there. Wow guinmaan, you have a lot of hate for the Yaris. My wife and I got our 2008 yaris HB early in early 08, our only complaint is lack of cargo room, but we knew that going in.
We've driven other vehicles, but we still enjoy the ride in the Yaris. Is it so hard to believe that because you hate it that we must be idiots to enjoy ours?

I especially like how they smell when I unload them...seriously even toyota loving co workers make note of the interior smell and their hatred of it. That's because all the plastic is from china. the emissions that come off it when new are literally sickening like NO other car - not even close! Koreans included! What lovely toxic materials are in that plastic. It's just a 15 yr. old echo underneath. the ride and steering is awful.

This is funny because I drive these compacts regularly. The Yaris is torture to drive. The interior is the cheapest in segment buy far - it stinks of toxic materials when new more than even a Kia or hynd. The ride quality is shit unlike his claims the steering is kia like and manual box is shit. I'v driven the new Mazda 2s and they put a smile on your face - much better sporty steering feel and ride quality, 2 steps up better interior quality, more power and a sweet manual box. no contest

There fucking cheap and torturous to endure (drive). Hell buy an 8 yr. old echo because it's the same fucking vehicle- NOTHING HAS CHANGED in the seat of pants feel. same noisy unpleasant go kart ride etc. The mazda 2 is actualy fun to drive while the yaris is torturous. The fiesta (Maz. 2 based) has more tech. & dual clutch 6 speed.

Another advantage that the Yaris has over the Fit, Versa, etc....basic routine maintanence is so easy to do on this car. For example, it is so easy to change your own oil on the Yaris. The Fit and the Versa may give you more room, but take a look at the placement of the oil plug and filter....You can't change your own oil. This is why I chose a Yaris over the other options (Fit, Versa), because I wanted to do my own basic routine maintenance.

@hamsterama both pieces of shit to drive and live with on a daily basis - I've driven 1000's of both fit and yaris. Mazda 2 is so much better of a drive it's laughable! The new mazda 2 based Ford fiesta takes it up another notch with more features, best tech. pkg available in Sync, and the super trick dual clutch 6 speed. New and MUCH better choices for like money are now available from Mazda and Ford. Potential buyers don't believe me go and drive them all for yourself - I have.

The gruesome toxic smell of chines plastic interior is like no car I've EVER driven. Kinda matches the driving experience as well. @hamsterama Really? because the Fiesta is the Number one selling small car in Europe. Ford sales are up a whopping 53% in China because of Fiesta and Focus - There not buying Yaris' there! The Mexico assembly plant is same protocol as euro plants and still has more domestic content than any U.S. assembled Honda orToyota. Fusion is assembled in mexico as well and is segment leader in quality and reliability and is rated number 1 in segment by all auto media.

@hamsterama For your information, latest JD powers Toyota ranked 21st and Ford ranked 5th ahead of both Honda and Toyota. ford scored 93 probs per 100 cars while Toyota scored 113 prob per 100 cars. Toyota 'make it cheaper' as most chinese components utilized in industry - so Japanese assembled yaris with chinese components better than proven mexican assembled fiesta with domestic components? I think not. ' Mechanics ' in Yaris same 10 yr. old shit in Echo. wake up get educated!

JD powers is more reliable than Consumer Reports as long as Honda dealers aren't filling out questionairres (honda dealers were caught by JD Powers filling them out) Fact is that the long term JD study is the most telling but personally I've NEVER put stock in any of them. Pretty much every one who owns a Yaris, loves it. Many also find it a lot of fun to drive. The manual trans is really the way to go, as the auto saps too much power. It's lightweight, inexpensive, and accelerates quite quickly (the MT). So, fun to drive, gas-sipping, and really nice looking; what's not to love?

I am no expert, nor am I the most experienced driver (Received learners permit 5 months ago) but I drive this at driving school, and on the road especially the highway this car is annoying to drive compared to the 09 mini and Impreza I practice on. The centered speedometer is hard to look at to check speed on the highway and the shifter is way to far down, furthermore it does not in any way feel put together in terms of quality. If I were to buy a compact car I'd go for a Mini or a Civic coupe.

The whole World (yes there's something outside US) knows that american car manufacturers (for example GM) had a lot of problem in 2007 and after, losing jobs etc. and the japanese cars were popular and sell better.

ok i just watched this review and i'm SO glad i decided on the fit sport. only 26 cubic feet of cargo in the yaris?? the fit has 57+.. no comparison for cars in the same price range / class.
@danudasr20 the fit's real world mileage is actually quite high - most reports / reviews in the 34 city / 45 highway range (mpg).

@raykrislianggi I would reccomend anyone making a decision, to first drive both, with and without the amont of people you plan to ride in the vehicle on both a daily basis and frequent occasion, while making sure to note not only the obvious, such as handling etc. but its LOW throttle power. How well it picks up speed in stop and go traffic, along with how often you need to downshift for steep inclines and hills on the highway.

The fit only gets 14.9 Km/L Highway and 11.9Km/l City.
Most people are buying the Yaris because it is simple, yet robust and reliable. Best fuel economy for the best price. The Fit has a couple extra HP, But if I wanted 0-60 times I would not be buying a base line car. VVTI is comparable to i-vtec... They both have folding seats. The fit does have a little more space, but is the same in passenger volume. They are both great, the Yaris just does the same thing, better, for less money.
