@kreezt sure, that is if you want to be limited to what hides within 4 strings. There's many other practical uses for an absurdly large bass - for one tapping techniques like demonstrated here (being able to tap both the melody and bass line at enough of a distance that they don't blend is a useful thing), Bass chords work very well when you have access to higher strings (I play a 6 string and these create some very beautiful sounds - unique to that of a guitar), etc. etc.

And I can understand what can be played with this 11 string instrument, I just don't understand why is it still called a bass. the harp has more strings for example and a wider range but is it a bass?

The beauty of the bass lays elsewhere, not in range. any bass player that loves his instrument will tell you that.

@kreezt I never said that the Bass was to be played like a Guitar, in my opinion the sound is better - it has its own distinct characteristics which are fundamentally different then that of the guitar. Whats wrong with the luxury of more range in the instrument? Though not necessary, the Bass is your instrument and should be played the way you want it, if you feel only 4 strings is limiting then grab a bigger one, feel 4s too much and grab one with less (surprisingly there are 2 string basses).

This is some nice playing, but these multi string basses are pretty pointless, except to show off. They're very hard to play I'd imagine, and to top it off, they're almost always really ugly. Pretty much every single legendary bass player did fine with only four strings, John Paul Jones, Geezer, Cliff, Geddy, Jack Bruce etc etc. It's a fact that you are well of with only 4, maybe 5 strings at most.

well if it is 11 string, it means that the range of thickness will be larger. Because the guitar is fretted, the frets have to be exactly placed, otherwise the note is out of tune. a thicker string requires wider spaced frets between semitones, as shown by a bass guitar compared to a guitar. The slanted frets allow the thinner strings to have narrower fret spacing that the thicker ones, therefore allowing the intonation of the instrument to be correct

I always thought it was just to make getting to the higher notes easier (meaning you don't have to worry about bumping into the heel). You can get Dingwall basses that have fanned frets like this in just 4 or 5 string varieties, and intonation is adjusted at the bridge. Essentially it makes the scale of the bass varied for each string, so the thinnest string has a short scale, and the thickest have long scale.

There are some styles of music now that require notes lower than the open 'e' on a four string, but most semi-pro 5 & 6 string players use them to avoid learning how move around the fingerboard. 11 is another animal entirely, not even really in the bass range through much of the instrument.
