@Motuorg great analogy. a good measure of a great artist is how many ignorant detractors they have. same people looked at picasso and asked, "why are the eyes on the same side of the head?"...pearls before swine
With Joni's vocals and Jaco's solo, it might be easy to forget that Pat Metheny is in there, too, at the beginning. But to overlook his contribution would be a mistake.
At the start.I think this is a great example of what Jaco had said " always learn the melody to any song you learn " ( more or less along those lines) . Here his bass playing is singing along with Joni.
I was lucky enough to see Joni Mitchell the first time she and Jaco played together live. It was in Sacramento in 1974. I didn't know who Jaco was before that night. I was there to see Joni, but I couldn't take my eyes off Jaco. He was only 23 and so beautiful. He and Joni had amazing chemistry. I was so sad to learn how his life ended, so tragically and way too soon.
Joni's voice paired with the voice Jaco made out of the bass are perfect together. This isnt my favorite song of theirs but its very good. There are a lot of great bass players out there and most are not known like Jaco. The thing is so what if you can move your fingers and play what Jaco did. He made that bass part. You dont have to be technically ridiculous to be a great. Jaco was the whole package. The only person I think comes close on singing with the fretless is Victor Wooten.
Jaco didn't revolutionize the bass by himself, people seem to look right over everyone leading up to jaco; like Scott Lafaro, NHOP, Ray Brown, Ron Carter, I mean shit....plenty more before them, jaco developed his own style (around great players) with harmonics, and revolutionized SOLO bass, but as far as the ideas, check out Sunday at the Village Vanguard (bill evans trio) with Lafaro on bass if you want to hear a bass revolution..... influences, it takes influences.
Jaco Pastorius was and is the Greatest Bass player to walk on this or any other planet!!! He single handedly evolved the modern bass for both bass players and music fans... and all on a $100 hock shop guitar. All the living bass legends (Jeff Berlin excluded) acknowledge Jaco's brilliance & importance. He was a shooting star among mortals. We miss you Jaco!!!
I have a hard time listen to this .........I miss Jaco so much. How could he be take away........its quite sad. I saw him and spoke what quite a few times in the Village around 4th and jones st.
I will not hear of Jaco being slammed and it won't be tolerated! If you don't get the art, don't comment. If you don't know the history, don't comment. Poor Jaco....Sure miss you. This man created an entirely new way of playing the electric bass in jazz and in other forms. No one could match his speed and creativity at the time, and people have improved upon it now. If you think this type of playing is ho hum, you weren't around when it didn't exist, and it was born right there in his hands!
For me--and this isn't to dis Stanley Clarke or Jeff Berlin or any of the other great bassists the world knows or has known--but speaking for myself, there was Jaco and then there was everybody else. On his best nights, when he was really, really on--no one could touch him.
@scrapingteeth What you are trying to say is that there are several very fine and long established players you are aware of, but that Jaco ...is the most outstandingly Unique in the whole world. Saying it that way does not "dis" anybody.
For those who might not know, Joni Mitchell and Charles Mingus formed a true friendship. Mingus *approved* of Joni's lyrics for this song (they're brilliant).
He did not suffer from schizophrenia, He was Bi-Polar. He was diagnosed by Dr. Fred Erskine, the father of his drummer Peter Erskine. His beating was in Ft. Lauderdale, and the bouncer was also part owner of the club. Like a lot of Manic Depressives, Jaco attempted to level himself, (self medicate.) By the way, Luc Havan owns a real estate company in West Palm Beach, he served about 4 months for Jaco's murder.
@johnwiseman17 As Ingrid so succinctly put it, he served one month for each of the children he left fatherless. ANYONE trained in martial arts should have had more self control, especially when dealing with someone who talked as much shit as Jaco.
Anyway, we'll always have the music. What a master.
Thank you. Schizophrenia is a terrible thing to deal with. i know firsthand. My partner is borderline. Drinking triggers it. 3 suicide attemps in the last 30 days. Such a shame because he is so brilliant.
Didja hear Jaco quote the theme to Third Stone From The Sun but made it sound like a Santana song. Way groovy, man!! We love you Jaco, wherever you are !!
joni did the tour for mingus, where this video was from, with metheny, lyle mays, jaco, michael brecker (replacing wayne shorter) don alias and peter erskine. nice band.
Goodbye porky pie hat if anyone wonders about the song. John Maclauglin dod an amazing version of this with Jonas Hellborg which I recommend to everybody!
All this crazy talk! "I don't see what made Jaco so great a player..." Here's the deal - you don't have to see! Those that have seen, they carry it all the way across the finish line. Jaco's legacy is sealed; his playing will forever inform players who want to go further. Listening to ANY jazz is a subtle and honed skill. If you cannot "hear" Jaco's genius, you can either keep trying... or you can turn away and go enjoy anything you like. What you cannot do is refute or reduce the man's impact.
@benjbass32 You are totally right! I am a bit of an armature musician (Keyboards/Piano for 30+years) myself. Personally, although I LOVE classical & jazz/blues (& also World music, Afro Pop, Classic Rock (LedZep,Floyd, Eagles, Hendrix, etc + much more) I have an affection for most music. With very few exceptions, that which I don't actually like, I can at least "appreciate". Anybody who knows not what makes Jaco so "great", is obviously a complete musical ignoramus! Piss on them I say!!!
He took away all the 'speed bumps' as he himself called them. And then prepared the intrument to be playable again. In my opinion that's kind of impressive.
Jaco may put you off because he was a showman, threw musical quotes around like crazy and had a nasty habit, but make no mistake, he was the most evocative player on the stage. His work with Joni will never be topped!
i don't get it. i know he's supposed to be one 3-4 best who has ever lived. i've heard some of his stuff and generally i've liked it. but i have yet to find a solo recording of him that's even remotely entertaining. it's like he starts a very simple loop and then just makes goofy noises over it. what am i missing here?
wyattdawg, lol, you're speaking from a position of ignorance. For starters, listen to his first solo album. If you find nothing entertaining there, it's you, not Jaco.
i'll agree w/ ignorance...if i hadn't overstated it before then i at least implied it. when i said solo i wasn't really referring to any of his solo albums but rather a live recording...i've watched from 6-10 on here, Dailymotion, etc. and haven't really seen what i was expecting, paste me a link if you know of a good one

Un génie qui à été poignardé par le patron d'un bar dans le qu'elle il voulais allé boire pour oublié son divorce, il n'avais pas idée de qui il était. c'est vrai qu'à la fin il passait pour un clodo !
i think Joni is hands down the most talented female in popular music. I actually think her singer/songwriter material is superior to the fusion. May i suggest the albums "Blue" and "Court and Spark".
I would like too see more videos of this concert.. that period for me was so magical.. and the combination of talents unsurpassed.. Im reminded of Hejira too what a great album. If anyone can find more live footage of these artists pls put it up there .Superbe!!
WOW !....I saw Jaco at The Bayou in Georgetown in 1983 with a great lineup behind him....He used an echoplex (tape loop) like he used on the last part of this video to play Purple Haze. He's definitely top 5 in the world, EVER, on bass. And, one of my musical influences.
No, I don't mean third stone from the sun instead of purple haze. He played purple haze, solo, with a tape loop machine. Amazing. Yes, he also played third stone from teh sun in other concerts, but, that night, it was purple haze. I think he did it for showmanship and effect, which he was most successful. That night I met the 2 drink minimum with soda, as I wanted to not miss a note.
And to give a hint, at 3:58 he goes up to the amp as if he will hump it, a move anyone who ever saw Hendrix live would have instantly recognized. Beautiful.
My personal opinion is that Jaco Pastorius, John Entwistle and Cliff Burton (all dead unfortunatly) were the best, most creative and groundbreaking bass players of all time! We all have our own thoughts but this is mine, ofcourse it's hard to compare bass players of jazz, rock and metal but still...
I saw this tour in Detroit back in 1979 and had no idea that I was taking part in a great piece of musical history. I think Joni was brilliant for putting Metheny and Pastorius in her touring band. I've been talking about this concert to anyone who'll listen for years.. thanks for posting. By the way, there's a great piece of film editing at 2:00 where they show someone with binoculars, then give us a through the lens effect as they pan the stage to find Jaco kicking off his solo.
uh. no one's disputing that jaco is a genius, but the fact remains that not only was joni one of the best performers of all time, but she has one of the strongest catalogues of original songs for any songwriter period.
any in terms of her not being most people's cup of tea, she sold millions of records so clearly someone liked her.
Just to clear things up, "brothalynchhung" is not my screen name, it's my buddy's (who is not an angry bigot by the way) he signed in on my computer like a year ago and I can't remember my own password so I use his. I'm not angry, or a bitter musician. I just don't like joni mitchell's songs. Obviously you all do. To me they just don't sound special or inspired really. I know you all don't agree, and I'm not trying to trigger another big anger sessions again so just chill on it this time
Can't blame you for that, i guess it it just one man's opinion. I don't listen to much of her stuff, but i thought it was weird you couldn't give her any credit for doing her thing when it's made such a big difference on a lot of people's lives. Maybe this day and age what she did is overlooked because of the way music is nowadays. I think it's sad, but it's just getting ready for another revolution
you are very right ,songwriting from Joni has made many then look to her and now,but she doesnt get the reconition she deserves,i hope she will soon , she is Canadian ,most of us creat and dont get that reward
Nice combination. Kind of sexy. Very atmospheric. I've seen him live with Zawinul, Erskine, Shorter, I believe also with Badrena. They played "Fast City". Incredible !!
Who says someone that great has to have a ridiculously large ego or unassailable self-confidence. Part of how he got so great was not thinking he was so great. He kept working on the music, where most people decide "hey, I am awesome" and stop progressing. As a final comment, this was one of the greatest groups ever put together. Any of us, no matter how 'good' can learn a great deal from just listening to how these guys performed on this tour.
actually after reading a biography about jaco by one of his best friends - bill mikowski, jaco thought he was the best bass player in the world, even when he was just touring aroun florida.
he went up to people like ron carter and said "im the best fuckin' bass player that has ever lived", and they just went "hey fuck off!".
I don't think there is any professional jazz musician who would question whether he was the greatest electric bass player ever. Certainly it is a tremendous loss to the music that he died so young. On the other hand he made a plethera of music for the rest of us to enjoy (and learn from). The few times I was with him he was nothing but kind, helpful, decent.

That's because it is my friend!
She covered the tune and just added lyrics.
Great stuff, huh?

WOW !....I saw Jaco at The Bayou in Georgetown in 1983 with a great lineup behind him....He used an echoplex (tape loop) like he used on the last part of this video to play Purple Haze. He's definitely top 5 in the world, EVER, on bass. And, one of my musical influences.
leesystems 3 years ago
I think you mean Third Stone From The Sun instead of Purple Haze
dimebag983 3 years ago
No, I don't mean third stone from the sun instead of purple haze. He played purple haze, solo, with a tape loop machine. Amazing. Yes, he also played third stone from teh sun in other concerts, but, that night, it was purple haze. I think he did it for showmanship and effect, which he was most successful. That night I met the 2 drink minimum with soda, as I wanted to not miss a note.
leesystems 3 years ago
At 4mn, it's obviously Third stone from the sun (twice).

And to give a hint, at 3:58 he goes up to the amp as if he will hump it, a move anyone who ever saw Hendrix live would have instantly recognized. Beautiful.

we can talk about chops and stuff...
But there is only ONE bassplayer in the world that can give me the goosebumps from ONE note only...Jaco
He was touch by GOD !!!
Joni is lovely btw

I agree. It was a brilliant move on her part. Don't forget Michael Brecker and Lyle Mays! The whole thing is pure genius!!

some lithium on time and we would still have this genius around!!
too bad that instead of eccentric or loud, he was not recognized as a bipolar genius that needed some expert attention..

forget joni mitchell,
jaco was much more talented.
joni mitchell just knew how to pull those heart strings.
She wrote some pretty songs, but that's not hard to do

YES!!!!that's why you haven't done it yet? do i sense another bitter musician? Joni was great, just not most people's cup of tea.
JesustheLizard 3 years ago 2
uh. no one's disputing that jaco is a genius, but the fact remains that not only was joni one of the best performers of all time, but she has one of the strongest catalogues of original songs for any songwriter period.
any in terms of her not being most people's cup of tea, she sold millions of records so clearly someone liked her.
TheMaxVernon 3 years ago 2
I don't understand what you are arguing about? did you reply to me by mistake? the name "brotha lynch hung" says it all. ANGRY BIGOT
JesustheLizard 3 years ago
Just to clear things up, "brothalynchhung" is not my screen name, it's my buddy's (who is not an angry bigot by the way) he signed in on my computer like a year ago and I can't remember my own password so I use his. I'm not angry, or a bitter musician. I just don't like joni mitchell's songs. Obviously you all do. To me they just don't sound special or inspired really. I know you all don't agree, and I'm not trying to trigger another big anger sessions again so just chill on it this time
brothalynchung 3 years ago
Can't blame you for that, i guess it it just one man's opinion. I don't listen to much of her stuff, but i thought it was weird you couldn't give her any credit for doing her thing when it's made such a big difference on a lot of people's lives. Maybe this day and age what she did is overlooked because of the way music is nowadays. I think it's sad, but it's just getting ready for another revolution
JesustheLizard 3 years ago
sounds like you need to get over yourself and stop measuring music by you and your buddys ignorance

Any of us, no matter how 'good' can learn a great deal from just listening to how these guys performed on this tour.
vibeway 3 years ago
actually after reading a biography about jaco by one of his best friends - bill mikowski, jaco thought he was the best bass player in the world, even when he was just touring aroun florida.
he went up to people like ron carter and said "im the best fuckin' bass player that has ever lived", and they just went "hey fuck off!".
maybe jaco was right...
jamesbeckers 3 years ago
I knew Jaco casually......and mostly I remember him entering Kenny's Castaways in NYC, saying, "I am the greatest bass player in the WORLD!"
He was crazy, high, and GENIUS
parksidekaren 3 years ago 5
I don't think there is any professional jazz musician who would question whether he was the greatest electric bass player ever. Certainly it is a tremendous loss to the music that he died so young. On the other hand he made a plethera of music for the rest of us to enjoy (and learn from). The few times I was with him he was nothing but kind, helpful, decent.
vibeway 3 years ago
All aside, would jaco be the same if what had happened had not. Without the troubles Jaco had, everything would not be the same.
