@southernmisfit Specifically, the idea was to allow the induction of outside cold air to be fed into the carburetor. Since cold air is more dense, the concept was that you would see some horsepower increases. Chevrolet Chevelles had Cowl Air Induction, Corvettes as well, grabbing air from off the windshield. The concept was the same on any direct hood scoop for the engine. In this design, it was mostly the "cool" factor of allowing the scoop to pop up. Underneath sealed to air cleaner.
