  • Making this recipe tomorrow!!!!! Love your 80's crockpot, I had the same one but finally worn it out! Bet it lasted 20 yrs! So don't get rid of it, the new ones now last about year before I have to replace them!

  • YES! I always put butter in my refried beans. Ha I thought I was just being another weird Californian...yay!! and yes it is absolutely wonderful. so one question...should I or shouldn't I soak?

  • @TheOddgothgirl Some say soaking beans makes for less gas. I have never had a gas problem when eating beans and I don't know whay so I never presoak unless I want them to cook faster the following day.

  • Looks pretty good and I love the idea of making a bunch and freezing them. Thanks for the recipe ideas!

  • The 'starch/grease' explanation is nonsense.

  • @yousuck2000 Your trolling bahavior is nonsense. :)

  • @yousuck2000 your stupid is showing

  • @yousuck2000 obviously you know nothing about cooking otherwise u wouldnt have shown you're stupidity...moron

  • Beans in the crock right now!!!! LOVE your videos! :)

  • After a lifetime of eating this type of beans I've never had them with butter! I'm going to try next time !! ;)

  • My recpie is beans ,olive oil and lemon one small spoon of tumric powder, cumin, chrushed hot pepper, tomatoe with out the goo and garlic paste

  • Omg I haven't had refried pinto beans in a long time!

  • i fried up a nice pile of of crispy bacon and added to the mashed beans(chop up into small pieces)

  • I'm farting just watching this !

  • look good, i put a hamhock in my beans while theyre in the crock pot adds tons of flavor!

  • omg ty I have always had problems making refried beans and now I know why.... :) I usually make my beans with pico de gallo and bacon and we eat bowls of beans with cornbread and then I try to refry the left overs. Now I can good refried beans. Thank you so much for sharing

  • Mexican and watching a vid on making refried beans, awesome.

  • Would have been nice to have the recipes above here in the "more info" section.

thanks for the video & efforts though.

  • @foodsenses I did a video demonstration. I really don't know what other info needs to be put in the "more info" section.

  • @Praxxus55712 agreed...ive made these beans several times, i only added garlic and i didnt need any other information....

  • @Praxxus55712 I think what foodsenses means is a list of ingredients, even for such a simple dish as this. Now viewers have to go back in the video and search for what you put in. A list is much easier.

Still, great vid, I'll certainly make these for myself.

  • Those beans look really great. I love the idea of just throwing the beans in a slow cooker and cooking them that way. But I always thought that you had to soak beans overnight to remove the indigestible sugars that cause gas and the phytic acid that prevents the absorption of minerals?

  • @prairiepatch Yep you're right. Soaking them is the best way. I usually forget to do that. I wake up and think "Oh! I think I'll make beans today!". Planning ahead has never been my strong suit. :)

  • Few things in this world are better than beans fried in bacon fat.

  • Bacon Grease= Saturated Pig Fat

  • @TheBlackStar999 mmm mmm gooood! :)

  • @TheBlackStar999 bacon grease= delicious flavor lol

  • I never eat floaters...never!

  • looks great! I usually use Kidney beans instead of pinto beans for my refried beans but ill need to try pinto

  • Butter!!! I've made beans boiled, refried, borachos, etc. for 30 years. No one ever said anything about butter. What a concept! I am making sopa de frijol in the morning for my Nena, my grandaughter! Will sneak the butter in when I refry them and see what she thinks; see if she notices. (She's 8 and has a very finicky frijole palate ;) I can't wait. Thanks for your videos. You already know I love them all.

  • im 14 and me and my friends made this it was great love your show!

  • A variation on this recipe is to add sliced fresh Jalapenos and sliced onion to the beans as they cook in the crock pot. It adds a delicious flavor to them that carries with them as they are refried. Great Video.

  • Would falling apart soft be TOO done and could i use pork fat instead of butter? thank you..

  • @shair00 For refried beans you won't have any problems at all doing them how you mentioned. In fact it sounds delicious! :)

  • Made these yesterday. It was a breeze and they are some of the best refried beans I've ever had. Thanks for the great recipe.

  • Great video/recipe.

    Thank you!

  • wow never thought of cooking beans that way, in a slow cooker. I only herd of them stove top(which is a pain) and a slow cooker (which i don't have and seems complicated) I do have a slow cooker though! I've always wanted to make my own beans, now it seems so easy, good bye canned beans!!!!! thank you

  • @womanontherun2 A slow cooker is great. Toss in beans, plenty of water, turn on low and go live your life. Come back in the evening and you have finished beans! :)

  • @womanontherun2 An even better way of cooking beans is to use a pressure cooker. Do exactly as he said, but instead of 3 hours your beans will be done in 40 minutes or so. I'm brazilian and we eat beans just about EVERYDAY! We eat them with rice, which would be a great idea for those leftover beans. U can freeze the beans and when u want to use them fry chopped onions and garlic, add the beans with juice and let the whole thing boil. The beans should be very moist to be eaten with rice.

  • @taticapelli yeah my mother-in-law is puerto rican and my father-in-law is cuban, they do black beans all the time, she does in a pressure cooker too, but I don't have one otherwise i would totally use. But I got to say no matter what beans ya make they are always better fresh! I love it! I make black beans (my mother-in-laws recipes) pinto beans lentils, but I haven't done kidney beans yet, I have been waiting to see how abuela does hers they are so good and kinda sweet.

  • @taticapelli If you have any bean recipes please share! I love authentic home food!!

  • Hey, I just wanted to say, thanks for posting these videos.

I was making dinner for myself, and this video and your video for making enchiladas where really helpful.

  • when you make refried beans besides salt and pepper should you add any garlic or onion, so that you can layer the flavors...hope to hear back from you...thanks, also this is probably one of best videos i've seen on making refried beans, you did a really good job tellign the ingredients and telling what to do step by step...and you gave alot of good tips.

  • @sabrinakaye89 You can definitely add garlic and onion. In fact I think garlic and onion go well in pretty much everything. :)

  • Does it need to be pinto beans ?

  • @HerbSmoulder Not at all. Use your favorite beans. Black beans, navy beans, etc. If you like the taste then go with whatever bean you like. :)

  • last question .. what if i don't have any rice cooker? : )

  • @yvagale rice cookers aren't used to make any part of this recipe.

  • ahhh.. ok, i'll look for that :) can i use this for nachos?

  • @yvagale Pinto beans can go on nachos. I use them on nachos every time I make them........along with quite a bunch of other ingredients.

  • what's the name of the beans? hehe.. i'm in italy, and i hope there's a kind of bean like that here... thanks :)

  • @yvagale I use pinto beans for my refried beans. They're a pretty all-purpose common bean here.

  • dude you are a boss. thank you for this. i will make this + spanish rice + some enchiladas tonight!

  • i dont have a crock pot can i use a rice cooker?

  • Great video! this is exactly what i was looking for, thanks for the tips!

  • I'm so excited, I learned how to make homemade flour tortillas the other day and now I have an awesome refried bean recipe to go with them! Thanks so much for taking the time to share your home cooking videos, I love them! ^_^

  • This is the most impressive refried bean recipe I've yet seen. I, too, use bacon grease (instead of the traditional lard) which gives a nice smoky flavor, but I never thought to use butter as well. I'll be keeping my eye out for more great stuff from you!

  • Butter, Bacon Grease....You're amaziing! I Love you!!! Lol Real food Real good cooking!!!!!!

  • It shows you have a love of Mexican Food. Where city are you in (you mentioned snow). Refried beans are such a comfort food. I made some the other day with bacon drippings and mexican chorizo (peytons brand) and they came out pretty good. I didn't put a lot of bacon drippings or chorizo. Wish I would have put the onions and butter though.

  • Honestly, I never use hot water for ANY cooking. In most homes and dwellings, hot water can sit in a hot water heater for days before use transfering small amounts of metals into your food which in turn, affects the flavor. Good video.

  • HI!!!.... Im falling in love with your cooking videos!.. Please DONT STOP!!!

  • butter? o.O

  • these beans look awesome, thank you for sharing. one question, would you ever add garlic to this recipe??

  • @shair00 I definitely would! I didn't on this just because I know some people don't like garlic. I love garlic in just about everything though! :)

  • @Praxxus55712 wow, i love garlic in everything too...thank you..

  • I just made these beans with olive oil instead of bacon grease and they turned out great. I can't stop eating them out of the pot. :-)

  • I just got done making both of your enchiladas and refried beans, and they both turned out great. I bet the refried beans would make an excellent bean dip for get togethers aswell. thanks so much.

  • I made these today and they turned out great. I'll never buy canned again. Thanks.

  • THUMBS UP FOR BACON GREASE IN REFRIED BEANS!!! OH YEAH!!!

  • I just found your channel & I love your recipes! I learned from my mom & EVERYONE adapts recipes traditional recipes as time goes on! How close minded of some of these haters to think their way is the only way! Good job! ^_~

  • @mellokitty420 Thanks for the great comment! I totally agree with you. It would be so boring if one way was the only way.

  • h3ll y3ah dude i like about halfway thru to put in some salt pork and then the last hour i like to put about five cloves worth of garlic, some garlic salt, then fry it up with some bacon grease and sauteed onions give this recipe a shot and im sure youll love it

  • NEVER, NEVER, NEVER use hot water from the hot water tank. It is full of chemicals that have sedimented out from years of water sitting still.

    Wake up!

  • I guess. But, I noticed you forgot the cream?? Just saying. Sure they taste great. Peace...

  • my son is a bean freak. i like'em in my rice, chili etc but these really look great(can't wait to try it out) thanks praxxus...

  • Okay, I cook mine just a bit different. I add a whole lg Jalapeno with 4 slice marks on the pepper it does not make it hot but it adds that flavor we have come to love, good job!

  • @emoneyblue I prefer your way. Jalapenos make everything better. I'm sort of addicted to them. :)

  • Finalmente , no mas fried beand de lata , thanks

  • I followed your recipe exactly. They are good but I prefer my beans to be a bit spicy. Instead of butter and bacon grease, I like to make 'em with a tbsp or two of lard and a roasted serrano or anaheim pepper. Yea, I know. Lard. People are so afraid to cook with it anymore. What you said about having beans as a side with eggs for breakfast is absolutely true. Refried beans compliment eggs very well...along with some corn or flour tortillas. Excellent.

  • @SenorEd I prefer spicy beans too. I figured if I made them spicy I would get comments from people who think they're too spicy. I like your idea of spicy refried beans. You're officially my bean maker! lol

Ps: Lard is wonderful for......well......everything! :)

  • be sure to look thru the beans also because you will find rocks in them...don't want to break a tooth

  • When i heard the words: "bacon grease" i was positive I was going to like this video. Im going to start making mexican food, all your recipes look tasty. thanks.

  • Nice video. Am married to a Mexican and make beans most weekends in my pressure cooker. Am going to have to try using my slow cooker now that I have seen your post. FYI- if you are going to keep your beans in the fridge for a few days, keep the beans separate from the juice. It is customary to heat the beans in oil with a bit of diced onion, then mash, adding the juice with salt to taste. Thanks again for the new cooking method. Nice to see more than one way to make something.

  • Why are they called refried beans? We only fry them once.

  • @1kash123 You are not frying them unless you make them the mexican way... in a large sauce pan with boiling lard.... also, there should be a ham bone with some chunks of fat when you boil them in the crock pot, that adds bacon flavor and grease, then you can use less lard when you 'fry" them before smashing and adding cream. Beans, fuck yea!

  • Damn I just got SOOOOOOOOO HUNGRY and my tummy started rumbling after watching this video! I gotta try this out ASAP! :D

  • This looks awesome! My old Mexican grandma cooked great food and I picked up some things from her, but I never really got the refriend beans down. The way you make them looks great and I'll start trying it that way. I can see from your responses that you're not affected by haters who think they're the only one's who make "authentic" Mexican food. Let them hate. You just keep doing what you do.

  • @jsumudio I have a better idea. Lets head on over to grammas for dinner! :)

  • Hey man nice recipe. I like how you pointed out how simple it is to cook refried beans. I made a big pot two days ago and my roomates are trying to bum some off me already. I diced up an onion and a tomato in the pot with some bacon instead of just bacon grease. It is nice to get a good cheap meal other than Ramen noodles dude, and the beans hit the spot. Thank you..

  • @Iemota21 Bacon goes good in...........well.........everything! lol

Ramen always hits the spot too. I lived off that for ages when I was a kid.

  • your'e videos are awesome and the best i have seen for mexican foods tks a ton i have cooked before but i got a lot of tips from your vids keep it up

  • hi, do u have an authenic taco receipe, on how and what to use to make and season meat......been having hard time finding 1 and do not wanna use french's taco seasoning pouch. By the way i tried your enchilada receipe and was blown away...thank-u 4 sharing

  • @MrChitownstorm I will be making tostadas soon. They are the exact same way I make tacos. I think you're going to like that recipe for your tacos. It'll be very easy to make and delicious :)

  • @CosmicSPC It's a great video, it makes him gay that he's helping you?

  • ur suppost 2 sort the bean from the rocks rinse them nd then put em in the pot bt yea u did a ok job

  • ಠ_ಠ

  • Ray, I tried this recipe and I'm hear to tell you I found it fantastic. Also, I did what you said about adding them to my chili, omg what a difference it makes using these beans. Well done my friend.

  • organic, uncured bacon grease rocks even MORE!. there are NO nitrites or nitrates(cancer causing preserving agents) in it!!

  • Awesome video. I have cooked a lot of things, but found out I didn't have a clue when it came to Refries.

You even use my secret ingredient, BACON GREASE!!! Nothing beats the tang of flavor when it is incorporated into your food.

  • @kojiaque Yep bacon grease is a freakin miracle product!

although it makes a crappy facial mask. :)

  • The beans look delicious!..I am to half Mexican, half Irish, and I love cooking Mexican food!..I noticed that when your beans were finished cooking they looked flawless!..I stovetop cook mine and they always open ..I guess it does'nt matter, because you're going to refry them anyway..but yours just look more appealing:)..Great job!

  • @jclovetree81 Thanks for the compliment! I really appreciate it. :)

  • You should add some Ground cumin and paprika, some oregano is good too.

  • yeah baby! great recipe!.. fab!

  • omg i love when my mom uses homemade beans too though it takes 4ever but its true about the taste it is way better and fresher.

  • I'm so envious of you Ray, how are you able to eat those starchy foods and stay in shape ?

  • @I3addogy I think it's always been a super high metabolism. I'm glad too because I would hate to not be able to eat foods that I really like.

  • thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU! The way you describe the process, including details about "why", is very helpful. I was concerned about this being difficult - but you helped me understand that it isn't. Well done, Praxxus :)

  • @melosborne Thanks for the great compliment! That honestly made my day! :)

  • The best frioles I've ever had was made by a woman from Mexico who made traditional food from her home. She substituted coffee for the plain water. Her beans were much richer tasting and so yummy.

  • looked good i will have to try and make them soon

  • That looks very easy, I have to try it soon.

  • awesome and very helpful!

  • Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

Im going to try this today! :)

  • nice recipe man

  • haa haa haa haa haa haa haa haa !!!!!!!!!!! a bean rolled under the crock pot. oh thats to funny. haa haa haa haa!!!!

  • beans take so long to make D= i make them all the time but i dont use pintos i use peruano beans idk if i spelled that right lol

  • @ThatOneGuy831 I think you spelled it right. I've never had those kind. If they're as good as pintos, then I'd definitely eat them. I really haven't found a bean that tasted bad. :)

  • @Praxxus55712 you should try them. they are delicious.

  • Question? How come there are no seasonings in the beans as they are cooking in the crockpot? Fresh garlic? Onions?

  • @mukwah1111 I usually only add a pinch of salt and pepper when boiling beans. I add other ingredients when I use them in soups, chili etc. This way they're a basic ingredient not already pre-spiced. It's just a personal preference I guess. But I'm a HUGE fan of onion and garlic. They go perfectly in beans! :)

  • You are the best !!! You really know your stuff !!!! Gracias Amigo !

  • Lol.... I dont know why, but something tells me that you have a bit of an "oohhh, thats a handy little plastic container" fetish. Welcome to the club. We meet on Tuesdays...

  • question? Once you prepare this re-fried beans can you freeze them and how long... thks in advance for your response

  • msdwilliams, You can definitely freeze them. If you have an airtight container, you can freeze them almost indefinitely. They keep very well in the freezer. :)

  • Hi,

thank you for this great recipe!

In my opinion Bacon Fat is essential! Of course you can substitute it with vegetable oil but it won't be nearly as good.

I like refried beans, in Germany we have one brand of canned refried beans that have about of a third of whole beans in it,

    but homemade is always better!

btw. i'm not afraid of a little bacon fat or real butter, since these are natural ingredients..

The 'i can't believe it's not sowhat' is the stuff i won't touch...

    Joe from Germany

  • JoeHell67, Isn't bratwurst and other sausages pretty much German inventions? You live in one heck of a cool country! I'd be seriously fat if I had all that amazing food here. :)

  • Hi,

i think i got you, eat more natural food!

  • Frijoles! Pinto beans are my fave type of bean. They are so flavorful and hardly need any seasoning except a bit of black pepper and salt. If you cook soaked beans in a pressure cooker, it will take way less time to cook. Lard is a traditional ingredient for frijoles. Bacon fat is a good substitute.

  • Dear Praxxus55712, Thx for the awesome video. Very educative. Anyways as a Vegetarian and as I cannot use bacon fat ...do u have any suggestion . What oil/fat can I use and what special seasoning can I add to water when I cook the beans to make up for not adding bacon or chorizo ? Pl advice.

  • itellsri, bacon fat is definitely not needed for fantastic taste in beans. You can add spices to suit your vegetarian taste such as garlic, onion, chives and especially all vegetable margarine. The main thing to remember is to not drain the juice. A lot of the flavor is in the bean juice. Let me know what you end up using, ok? You 're probably far more experienced than me in using non meat options. If my cholesterol goes any higher, I'll be needing a vegetarian option. :)

  • Hi ..Besides onion n garlic I used chipotles in adobo and some times smoked paprika for that rich flavor ..For fat , I used Peanut oil , corn oil and at times Evoo. All delivered various results. As vegetarian cant get that restaurant refritos as they use Lard. Whats ur take ?

  • itellsri, chipotles probably add fantastic flavor! I'm going to try that in fact. I'm a huge fan of peppers. Thanks!! :)

  • I wonder what Chorizo fat would add to the taste of the beans instead of Bacon grease. I'll have to get back to you on that.

  • ipodagogo, chorizo makes EVERYTHING better!!! I totally love that stuff! Just the smell of it cooking makes me feel like I'm a kid at grandmas house. :)

  • Do not use hot water for your beans. Water heater thet have a bunch of dirty crap inside, and that is going to your beans.

  • 098richard, there's nothing gross in my water heater except for a few dead rats, a human hand and possibly some plutonium. :)

ps: Good advice! Cold water is probably better.

  • As I was making them I'm thinking to myself these are going to need some help! Wrong they were delisious thanks for your effort

  • so the dried beans are cooked in 3 hours? wow that's fast.

Also, don't you find that margerine taste way better than butter?

  • TakeSomeAdvice, cooking time varies due to cooking temps. I sometimes cook them slower or faster. 3 hours is average. Also, margarine is flavored oil. Butter has a special flavor that adds not only flavor, it adds body and a sheen to the beans that margarine is unable to duplicate. I wish margarine could do this because my cholesterol is a bit high. lol

  • An overnight soak, or a "quick soak" by boiling the beans for two or three minutes (or five!)...works good.

A rinse of fresh water after the beans are soaked after ANY soaking method, is key. Most people do not add the soaking time to the cooking time.

    Ray Rocks, no matter what!

Don't be afraid to pound the hell out of the beans with your blend of spices/herbs. Unspiced beans are dull as paste. Add salt (sodium) at your discretion. It is your pot of beans.

    Ray is correct about the

  • Ray is correct about the butter, but it is expensive per ounce. Lards/animal fats are cheap but saturated...At least butter is a shorter saturated molecule. <Nerd Alert!

Margarine is usually a vegetable oil that has been been hydrodgenated to be solid at room temp, inexpensive to create, yet retain a long shelf life. Margarine has nothing to do with flavor, or results.

A person who cooks refried beans might likely use straight up vegetable oil, like canola oil, rather than a frankenfat.

  • I like to add a bit of garlic and onion

  • "...I've been busy with the snow and Christmas and crap like that..." Hahahaha...

I am so happy that it's overrrrr....

  • Hello Ray, and Donald (webcajun)! Season's Greetings!

Hey Ray, I can't wait to see your vid post. I am having PC issues, so I will see this vid on Christmas Day on another PC.

I have become a convert to making refried beans with a pressure cooker. I like the constent creaminess and rapid results that pressure cookers give. Homemade refried beans with hamhock/onion/chilis/spices leave canned refried beans tasting wayyy too saly AND dull.

  • edit: consistent creaminess. Doh! :(

  • Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year......... Donald

  • The title of this video is redundant.

  • MoLewis57, I just read the title and agree. That's weird huh? lol

  • INSANE, huh? Well, it takes one to know one. ;)

  • Mo's kinda cute

  • Missed you Ray. Mmmnn, sounds like a yummy recipe to try, can't wait.

  • Ahahahah the snow Christmas and crap like that awsome!.....yeah BUTTER! and bacon grease Mmmmmm great recipe.

  • I missed you my friend its nice to see you back on. Merry christmas I hope you get every thing you asked for from santa. Have a good new year too. Cant wait untill summer.

  • yummmm! great recipe,Ray! Thanks! ---Angie

  • Wow okay I guess my brother isn't the only one to eat beans and scrambled eggs. I thought he was just weird hehe

We cook pintos in a crock pot with onions, garlic, one or two bay leaves, Salt and Peppa, alittle garlic powder anaheim chillies and ham hocks. So amazingly good it will blow your mind!

P.S. one ham hock per person or there will be fighting.

  • This is nice idea. I`m gonna try with bacon cubes, paprika and garlic. Thanx for idea buddy!

  • thanks for this. will try it later

  • woot! thanks ray! glad to learn the awesomeness that are pinto beans. i had no idea cooking a pot of beans was so amazingly cool and attention grabing but you showed the true wonderment of the pinto!

  • Great ideas! Those beans look so very good!

  • Hey Ray, do u know how to make chiliquilles? I don't know if I spelled that right but if you know how I'd love for you to teach me :) Merry Christmas!

  • Wow, I never thought of cooking beans in a crockpot! I will have to try that! And the freezing tips were great too. Thanks.

  • I bought a tin of refried beans and discovered that's the sort of thing you only do once. I never ate them again but I felt cheated because I love Mexican food. I am going to do this because the beans look, and sound, delicious.

    Best Wishes,

    Brendan

  • I make refried beans also. I will have to share my meathod soon.

I have a glut of recipes with no onion, including refried beans. I am allergic to onions.

The beans float from rough handling. The skin has broken free a little and makes an air pocket. Sometimes the bean splits and the skin holds and makes a void. I boil my beans until they sink.

You are right. The canned beans suck a lot. The preservatives sicken a lot of folks. Homemade is better.

  • I've made homemade bef
